Not bad. There's was a lot of the food missing like it needed restocking. But it had Halloween decor, and arts and crafts supplies .

I went here on a Monday morning around 9am. Come in the morning when the shelves are more organized, and the store is calm and quiet. They have a huge selection of cards at really good prices. All cards are $1 or 2 for $1. For all occasions, including birthdays, thank you's, congratulations, anniversaries, etc. They have a decent assortment of food. Lots of candy. Snacks like Chex Mix, Snyder's pretzels, and Pringles chips. Cake mixes, icing, sprinkles, spices, dried fruit, generic pop tarts, and lots of other stuff. They also have a large freezer/fridge section of food with microwavable dinners, Italian ice, generic ice cream, bologna, cheese, and yogurt. When you're not looking for something super specific, or when you're looking for snacks for a party (either hosting, or attending), come here. All snacks are $1, so you can get a big variety for your party!

I went to CVS and all they had was a colossal box of gloves for a whopping 9 bucks. I didn't need that many gloves. And the petroleum jelly was oddly priced. The smallest container cost more than a larger one outside of the First Aid aisle. Nice way to gouge injured people, CVS. So, screw that. I decided to go up to Harlem to find a decent 99 cent store. And here it is. It's not huge, but it's well equipped. They even have a large selection of aluminum foil takeout containers and pans with covers. Nice for a church social. Instead of spending $14+ at CVS, I spent a total of $2.92 for exactly what I needed. 99 Cent Stores will always have a special place in my cheap, cheap heart.

They seem to have less selection than the others: Things that you assume a 99 cent store will carry might not be here. The staff is rude, and very little help ("It's in the back somewhere!"). They seem put out by questions, and the guy at the front door jumps at you like he assumes the customers are all thieves. And the prices are a bit higher than the others, so that's strike three. I come here if I can't find what I want at the other two. (One is just is little bit East on 125th, and the other is around the corner on Amsterdam, BTW.) It isn't likely that I WILL find it, since they don't have much selection, but it's POSSIBLE, so I check. They very seldom have it.

This is the only place I know where you could get a Madonna statue, club clothes, and a shower curtain in the same place for under $10 dollars. First floor has clothes and the basement has home wares and personal care. I believe this building was a former bank so that explains why its so large. I see some reviews mentioning that some of the employees not being able to speak English. In my opinion if you ask around you will be able to find someone that does. If your in the Washington Heights border which predominately has Spanish speaking people what do you expect? I doubt anyone would question language if they were in Chinatown. 99 cents is 99 cents in English and in Spanish.

The furniture looked questionable and the clothing patterns were heinous. I don't want to know where those orange stilettos came from. Ambiance is not the strong point at Elmundo. What is, is the bottom floor. Great deals on all home goods. From bulk toilet paper and paper towels, to pots and pans, decor and bed sheets (packaged nice and tight). Super convenient for Hamilton Heights peeps.

This was not a simple move, as I now had to stock up on a lot of things. One of them was my own A/C, which my new building lacked. I bought an A/C unit, but I had to get it installed as some of the parts needed modification. The supt to my building was not available until the following day, so I needed to find a quick solution. I went around to several stores, hoping to find an oscillation fan in the meantime. It was late night on a Friday, and these guys were thankfully open. I found the fan I was looking for, and proceeded to check out. It was only then that I realized that it was past the store's closing hours. The owners kept the place going while I found what I needed, as they saw that I was having a bad day. These guys didn't even know me, and they went out of their way for me. Thanks to them, I didn't have to suffer that first night at my new place without A/C. I never forget those who helped me, and I thank them thoroughly for getting me out of a bind that day.

(I don't think I've bought any non-food items there, but there are a lot of them.) While you can find good deals, the experience is utterly hellish. How much do all those cans of Goya coconut milk cost? No idea (although other brands are marked). This isn't a one-time thing; certain items seem to just never get prices marked on them, at least not in the last two years. Since when is it okay to have earbuds in your ear while you are assisting customers, as well as texting on your phone? It's extremely unprofessional. Not to mention, when I purchased multiple t-shirts and finished paying, she went to grab them up and throw them in the bag and I asked that they be folded, first. She looked at me as if she didn't comprehend what I was saying and went back to texting and waited as I folded them and then placed them in the bag. When I got down to the last two shirts, I said "you could've have at least helped fold the shirts", and she responded, "it's not my job!!!!" Well as lazy as she is, I'm surprised she has a job. With employees like that, I won't be shopping at that establishment, again.
