It really is a small department store, they carry everything here. Clothing, shoes, housewares, baby needs, etc. What shocked me the most was at the back was a food section, not just dry canned foods, frozen and fresh vegetables, milk, dairy, eggs, etc. Prices were comparable, they had sales as well. A 4 ltr carton of milk was $6.00, that is a few bucks cheaper than a grocery store on a regular price. I would not go out of my way to shop here, however for a local store, it is great.

I went into this store to get a few birthday decorations. I was amazed at how clean and well organized it was. I'm used to seeing boxes all over the floor. Ladders laying against shelves and merchandise all over the floors. It was spic and span! I asked one of the employees if they had a particular bowl out back. She was incredibly friendly and eager to look for me. She did indeed find what I was looking for and even carried it to the check outs for me. I was completely blown away! I like this one because it's close to home and the staff are super friendly. But the truth is I go for bargains. And no one does it better than Dollarama. True, now some of their products actually cost $1.50, but most still come in at a dollar - and even several for a dollar, depending on what. My favorite purchases include things for the kitchen. One doesn't need to spend a fortune on little measuring cups. You get 4 for a dollar - cute tiny bowls for getting all those chopped ingredients ready for a stir fry. Or my cute little teaspoons that look like antiques and always get wonderful ooohs and aaaahs at my table. Another area that draws me is the aisles of great things to amuse my grandsons....5 glue sticks for $1 + 1 bag of feathers or tiny pom poms + construction paper = $3 and hours of arts and crafts - Picasso look out! This dollar store is my Happy Place. I grin when I see what new hairstyle Pam has this month, I can easily spend over an hour in this store without spending over $20.00.

I actually bought by skin care line here at a fraction of the price I pay at Shoppers Drug Mart. I was very surprised to see it here. They have a huge organized section now, two rows of wonderfully displayed products, from hair care , skin care and perfumes. I have always bought my hair products at Winners, you just get such a great value, and why not buy here. I usually, as much as possible shop at Winners, the cloths in the Boutiques, and downtown Halifax, are over priced. They cater to the tourists. Not really where I want to spend my money. I am all for supporting the local companies, but if I can't afford to shop there, I have to go where I can get quality brand names at a fraction of the cost.

I make no secret of considering its maze of aisles my own personal hell on earth and I generally enter fight-or-flight mode as soon as I pull up in the parking lot. Still, yesterday I had the good fortune of having not one, not two, but THREE positive interactions with friendly, polite, and helpful staff! I could hardly believe it. Not an eye-roll, not a heavy sigh, not a dismissive point in a vague direction - I actually received real, live customer service. So, while Walmart may still not be my jam, I have to give credit where credit's due. The folks I talked to knew exactly where the obscure items I was looking for were hidden and actually walked me there instead of sending me on my way. Plus, I was rung through by someone who was genuinely nice and knew better than to hit me with a 'hon' or 'dear.' No complaints for once!

Well, in the Historic Properties down near the Halifax/Dartmouth Ferry terminal is a wonderful shop that will definitely have you see things differently. Mr Levasseur is the proprietor of this wonderful establishment, but more about him in a minute. First let me mention the books for sale, they...and everything else in the store, for that matter, is made locally somewhere in Atlantic Canada. The books range from novels written by local authors to historical and biographical accounts of Atlantic Canada as well as glorious cookbooks (my weakness) and beautiful children's books that share stories about native culture, local animals and fish. It was with such pride that Mr Levasseur gave me a tour of the rest of the shop's treasures, pointing out beautiful walking sticks carved in the Annapolis Valley, hand knit and then felted ladies hats made in Quebec (everything else is from east of there and north all the way up to Baffin Island, like sealskin boots made by the Inuit and Inui). There are soapstone carvings, exquisite deer catchers, and my personal favorite - carvings by David Joseph Brooks, Mi'kmaq artist and carver. He creates beautiful art from native paintings to moose antlers and stone carvings. I could go on forever, but it really is worthy of a visit. The contents are awesome and Mr Levasseur is a charming story teller.

Sadly, no book on the Cabot trail was there but they had a nice book that was made up of mainly photos on Cape Breton. I was able to get a calendar on Cape Breton that was actually printed in Canada so that was a welcome surprise. My favorite items were the hand knitted mittens, hats and scarves with lobsters on them. The store owner gets them from a lady in Atlantic Canada which is a nice touch. There are a lot of locally made items in this store and I would recommend stopping by.
