The Thrifty Mountaineer - Mothman chips

The Thrifty Mountaineer

(2 reviews)

One thing I've learned so far visiting West Virginia: This part of Appalachia is obsessed with…read morecryptids. Mothman, Bigfoot, Sheepsquatch ... the gang's all here in West VA. The community really leans into myths and spooky legends, and you'll find restaurants, shops, food and drinks named after these cultural conspiracy theory characters all over the place. The Thrifty Mountaineer is the place to visit in Morgantown if you're into cryptids, because there are so many cryptid items for sale! Plushies, t-shirts, books, keychains, patches and so much more available. Mothman is THE cryptid of the state, and there are lots of Mothman things here. We picked up some Mothman potato chips, because we were curious what Mothman chips would taste like. (Turns out, Mothman tastes a lot like barbecue Lay's.) The store is also an overstock and liquidation store, a notary public and a place to get financial coaching. I can't even make this up. This store is so cool and random, and there are surprises around every corner. The people who work here are hella chill. But you'd have to be if you own and operate a friggin' store dedicated to cryptids, right? If you sell soap that smells like the Flatwoods Monster, you can't take yourself too seriously. These guys like to have fun.

Such a fun place to stop while in the Morgantown area! They have a decent sized parking lot and…read moresome fun signage outside. The inside consists of two rooms full of cryptid merchandise, general thrifty items, clothing, and your typical touristy gifts. They have a thrift "bin" which is essentially a table full of random stuff for $2. We found an unopened 6-pack of Hanes boxers and some replacement inner tubes that would fit a dirt bike. They have very fairly priced shirts for men, women, and children. I left with a $3 Bacardi tshirt and a $.50 corkscrew in a velvet drawstring bag. The staff couldn't be more friendly or helpful. They were so pleasant. There are two comfy chairs in the middle of the main room where you can relax while the rest of your party shops around. I'll definitely be back to share this experience with others.

Farmer's Market has been like a 2nd home as I was employed there for 5 years and only left for a…read morehigher paying job. What can I say about this place? It's a institution that has been around longer then I have, with regular customers who have patronized the place since its inception. The old building once was a carpet store, and a couple bought it and turned what its now Candyland and Farmer's Market. The store is a wonder being split down the middle, one side is devoted to fresh fruits and vegetables, while the other is candy (in monstrous amounts) devided up to be sold by the mixed bag pound, and there are about 100 different other candies besides, so if you can't find it, it may not exist. The are cheeses that are some of the best I have ever had and great prices for block cheese. The people who work there are as awesome as the place is itself. Ask them about anything in store they will pretty much know it inside and out. If not, they will go out of their way to help you. Come here, pure and simple. It's a great place where people from all over world have come and shopped here. I couldn't believe in the time I had worked there, that people no matter the race or religion could bond over candy. Michael Phelps even shopped here and as well as the PR guy for the Ravens all in one summer. You won't regret spending money here and even though I now work somewhere else I come here often, to get a taste of home.

When you walk in, the right half of the store comprises tables and tables of individual candy that…read moreyou bag yourself, hence the name "Candyland." The other half is a small grocery store with the basics including some produce, but not a whole lot of selection. It's adequate. There are two registers. The cashier was efficient but not too friendly. Worth stopping in at least to check it out.
