I still do some of our supplemental grocery shopping here: either harder to find items or those that bear a cost saving for us, such as quarts of heavy cream. If the item is the same price as at our local supermarket, the 2% cash back loyalty program win it for our local supermarket. And we still buy some non-grocery items here, rather than automatically ordering from the mega online company that I will not name here. Another change is that I have switched to the Walmart pharmacy for a couple of prescriptions, one for myself and the other for a pet. The service is excellent and the pricing an improv over our previous pharmacy. A supplemental benefit is that if I want to use up rewards money from my health insurance card, the self-service registers accept the card when other stores did not.

This two-store chain reminds me of the AG stores that you find in small towns as an option to traveling far to a supermarket or the very expensive convenience store prices. The people working here are friendly and they carry a fair variety of items. They have a team of butchers and two display cases, so there is quite a focus on meats. The meat prices tend to be a bit higher than the supermarket, though not always, and I assume the quality is higher also. They usually have some marked-down meats I sometimes avail myself of also. They even have frozen chicken hearts, gizzards and livers, the last of which I sometimes buy for myself and our cats (my wife can't stand liver). They have excellent bakery items, store-made take home meals, a fair variety of produce, drinks, snacks - well, you get the idea. They have a loyalty program that, since I do the bulk of my shopping elsewhere, doesn't result in many five-dollar off rewards, but it also gives me access to their weekly coupons. The grocery items are usually a bit higher than the supermarkets, which have an increased volume of sales, but perfectly reasonable , nowhere near convenience store pricing. Plus you are supporting a local business. There are also gas pumps off to the side if you want to get that done while you are there.

The employees are friendly and it is of course more convenient than driving to Newport or even farther. But I would be remiss if I didn't mention what I have noticed over the longer haul. It is of course a small store where this chain is concerned. So we have found they don't have items listed in the sales flyer sometimes, and also that they run out of common items, such as ice cream or, most recently, hamburger and hot dog buns. Now granted it was a holiday weekend, and when I went in on Tuesday morning they had them again, but nowhere near a full shelf. Perhaps their operating budget only allows for them to stock enough if everything is normal, and events like holidays or hot days overwhelm their ordering capacity. Still, I am glad to have them nearby, especially with the current price of gas.

It is not the closest Hannafords to us here,but it is larger than our Dexter store, and therefore not only has a wider stock of items but often will have sale items not available in the smaller branches. The first time I went in was to check on using the Klynk system for returnable cans and bottles, but it all happens through the register lines rather than Customer Service and it was crazy busy so I found a nearby redemption center. But I have since shopped at Hannafords a few times and like it for the above-mentioned wider stock. We recently wanted to celebrate by buying some lobsters and steamers, and this branch had them. Since we only buy either item once a year or so, we were pleased to buy both in Newport while they were on sale. I still really like our small-town branch where everyone is helpful and friendly, but also thankful to have this larger Newport store just a dozen miles away.

There are a few things missing from this Shop'n Save's shelves that seem like they should be there, but the people who work here are courteous, pleasant, and will go out of their way to help you. Plus you know you are getting way better groceries at Bud's than at the land of the creepy smiley face. I know that I am spoiled living in Providence, where I can get my hands on pretty much anything I want within a 5 mile radius, but it's annoying not to be able to find something like semolina flour at Bud's and having to drive to the natural food store down the street. They do make an effort to carry some international foods (cramming many of their offerings under the "oriental" placard... *cringe*), and they also have a section of natural foods and household goods. Their produce, meats and fish are all fresh and good. The store is neat and clean and I always have a good conversation with the cashiers and baggers. For Newport, Maine: 4 stars.

For the last several trips I have found they are out of at least one of the coupon sale items that I clipped on their app. For one visit, they were out of all three I wanted. As it keeps happening, I wonder they can't adjust their inventory up ahead of the sales, but what do I know? The last time they lacked two different meat sale items, chicken and beef, and when I asked the Deli folks about it, they told me the meat department went home early. Probably tired of being asked about the outages! I will keep going there for periodic shopping, because they carry items my local supermarket lacks, but since it takes twenty minutes to drive there, I will mostly shop there when I am in Dover-Foxcroft for an additional reason.
