We are in Kauai and rented a jeep. It's been raining alot here. And everything is fine most part. But as soon as we needed the windshield wipers. Not realizing they were broke... so we had to go to auto zone and buy windshield wipers just to see to drive in the rain.. since it was quit dangerous to continue to be on the road, not being able to see to drive in the rain! Does dollar not put their customers safety first?! I mean for a place that rains quit often, wouldn't that be one of the first things to have maintenance on? Let's talk about Theresa (the devil in the room). My family and I traveled for 5 1/2 hours with a reservation for a Jeep. After standing in line, (i'm being told by an old fart after 45 minutes that only one family member was allowed per car can be in line) we got a jeep. NOT the jeep that my family had reserved. The Jeep that was given to us by Theresa, was an older jeep with a handle turned down windows and a plastic back. Her claim was that it was the only one that was available. I called BS! Absolutely not! I was not going to have this Jeep and this lady ruin my vacation. I walked or should I say marched right back into that office and demanded that I get a newer Jeep. Go figure, within 20 minutes. I had a newer jeep.Do not and say do not go to this facility to get a car for a rental. There are many other options to choose from. I just wanted to give a shoutout to the agent (Mike Curtis) at the Dollar counter in Lihue -- super sharp and professional from the moment I walked up. He didn't waste time with the usual upsell nonsense and got straight to the point, which I really appreciated. Best part: he actually gave me the exact car I requested. The whole pickup process was smooth, quick, and no surprises. Solid experience all around -- wish every rental desk worked like this. The only issue car didn't have a full tank of gas, and car needed to be returned full. That costed an extra $15 for me. read more

We bought a trip through Booking.com which included air fare, hotel, and CAR RENTAL. We arrived after a long flight late at night and the employee told us we owed $469.87. When I reminded her that we had bought an all inclusive trip, she denied this and made us pay this amount. I was tired and figured I would pay and take care of it after the vacation. I have had a run-around for days now, with Booking.com only wanting to reimburse me $418.40 (which I imagine is what they paid Dollar Car rental) and no one seeming to care that I am owed $51.47. The experience of receiving and returning the car was fine, but this charge is NOT fine and no one seems to care. read more

DON'T COME HERE!!!! If you want to waste 3 hours of your Hawaii trip be my guest. Expect to arrive to a massive line that barely moves. After waiting in the line two hours you will see someone at the counter. After signing paperwork you will go outside and wait another 30 minutes to an hour for your car to get washed and brought to you. We waited in line for 2 hours. One weird lady kept com g back in and changing cars and they let her!! So 20 people in line and only 2 people helping check in so that left 1! Also we had to get our jeep towed because it was leaking gas. The lady said "oh cut line happens all the time". I said no we don't know what it is and the inspector said he didn't see a cut line so we're still in the middle of that one! She said "you should have bought the insurance!" Gave us a different jeep but didn't add the insurance like we asked her to. read more

This is the WORSE rental car ever! I made reservations and arrived at 11:30, waited in the line for 2 hours. Only two people working and literally taking 15 to 20 minutes per customer. Then the rep, Simona, said we have to wait for the car to be cleaned and washed, take another 20 minutes or so. I asked what happened since we had it reserved and her response: because I'm working at the counter not washing cars outside. 3 hours wasted and maybe longer in other people cases just for something we've reserved ahead of time is just ridiculous. Don't overtake reservations if you don't have it. TERRIBLE SERVICE! read more

This place is so so so slow... off season and waiting 45mins to an hour and only 5 people in front of me. Elderly couple in front were given a Suburban to drive for the 2 of them. She told us we didn't have a reservation!! Priceline dropes the ball!!! How I almost got stranded two miles from the airport. Renting a car in Kauai? One month from now, no cars available. Five weeks from now standard size car $1100 for a week. Reserved a standard size car with www.DiscountHawaiiCarRentals.com five months in advance for $750 for a week with Dollar Car Rental. Came here March 25, the height of spring break, with fully booked airline flight to Kauai. Waited at the airport for the Dollar/Thrifty shuttle to come by. Hertz shuttle comes by, and then an Alamo, and then a Budget shuttle. 10 minutes pass, and a second Hertz shuttle comes by, and then another Alamo, and another Budget. 20 minutes pass, and a third Hertz comes by. Finally, a Dollar/Thrifty shuttle shows up. Of course, by this time the line is humongous for the shuttle, and not everyone will fit. Standing room only, as apparently they only have one shuttle running, due to staffing shortages. Minus one star. At the Dollar/Thrifty car rental office near the airport, second line out the door waiting to rent a car. Line is slow due to the usual company pitch to get people to buy supplemental insurance to cover loss of use, etc. Takes a good 20 minutes to get through this line. Minus another star. Once the paperwork is completed, have to get in a third line, waiting for the actual rental car to arrive out of the car wash. 10 minute wait. The car wash missed the bottom half of the rear fender. Minus another star. Employee leaves the 2021 Nissan Altima engine running, not even checking our paperwork. We check out the outside of the car, and jump in driving a couple of miles to get something to eat. At the restaurant, I put the car in park and am about to turn off the ignition. Only there is no ignition with a key inside! On off button, just like in a Prius. Look for the key everywhere, but can't find it. Whatever you do, don't turn the engine off, as if it is a proximity key, the car will not restart without the key fob nearby. Drive back to the airport, where a company employee finds the key fob on the floor of the car just under the seat. read more

What a mess. We waited in line for 1 hour and 20 minutes -- 80 minutes! To pick up our car that we had a reservation for. The line was literally out of the door with only 4 people behind the counter for Thrifty and Dollar rent-a-car. Across the street (since I walked across the street to see if j could book somewhere else and then cancel our Thrifty reservation) at Enterprise/Alamo/National they had NO queue at all and 5 people behind the counter waiting to help customers who arrive. This is horrible. I would strongly recommend NOT booking at Thrifty unless you want to spend the first 1.5 hours or tour Hawaiian holiday waiting in line to pick up your car. Also, our friends who travelled with us on the same flight went to Avis and while they had a short queue, they only waited about 10 minutes (completely reasonable). read more

We prepaid for two cars, but were required to pay $15 per day extra for the other driver since we prepaid for both cars on one card. What a sham. What a scam. Theresa at the counter could not have been less sympathetic. DOUBLE SCAM because even though the other drivers who we paid for have insurance, and we have insurance, they made us pay an extra $300 for insurance that we don't need. I hate Dollar. read more

First off, be prepared to wait for a few of the shuttle buses. There is a 10 person limit and there are a ton of people trying to get over to the car rental area, we finally got on the 5th shuttle. You can walk to the car rental area, but it's about a 1/4 mile walk. It's across the street from the airport but there is no direct path to get there. You'll have to go across the parking lot then around to the entrance of the car rental area. After an 8-hour flight in, I didn't expect to stand in line for an additional 2 hours to get my rental car. I had done my reservations through Orbitz and thought that I had taken care of all fees. When I finally got up to the counter, I was told that I had to pay an additional $300 because I needed to be charged for an extra 1/2 day (because I was dropping the car off at 9pm). Since I had already waited, and needed the car, I reluctantly paid. The employees I encountered were very nice and once I got my car I was able to leave the parking lot quickly. My car appeared clean, but there was no sticker or notification that my car had been cleaned/sanitized. I dropped off at 9pm and the area was a lot less crowded. I dropped off the car and opted to get emailed my receipt. The wait for the shuttle was less than 5 minutes and I was one of 5 people aboard. My final receipt was emailed to me by the time I was checked-in. I was here the 2nd week that Kauai was allowing full planes to arrive, and I knew about the prices/rental car shortage. Hopefully once they're able to get more cars and more employees the process will be a lot smoother. Tip: If you're headed from the west side of the island, fill up the gas in Puhi, it's slightly cheaper than the gas stations in Lihue - unless you can fill up at Costco with your membership card. read more

We had a bit of a snafu (driver in the reservation forgot his ID at home) but the DOLLAR CAR RENTAL staff at Kauai were very patient and very helpful. Shuttles are available to take you to and from the airport and their office. Everyone has the ALOHA spirit. There is only one person in the line before us when we got there so there was practically no wait. As soon as we got everything settled, someone dropped off our car rental in front of th eoffice. Drop off is easy too. You just drive all the way up to the drop-off line, park, hand the key over to one of the attendants and you're done. Couldn't be easier. Cars were clean and in great working order. The staff are friendly and helpful. read more

Great experience renting through here. We booked through some random discount car rental site for a compact for a week while in town and had no issues. You do need to take a shuttle to and from the airport, but they were running without issue for both pickup and drop off for us, which was nice. We got in late on a weekday and were concerned that there might not be anyone on site to help us, but it ended up working out. Shuttle operator was friendly, too. Pickup and drop off were easy, car was clean, no issues with our Nissan Sentra at all during our stay. Price was really reasonable when we booked, too. read more

This place should be avoided. Shuttle & counter personnel were very helpful, but the CEO Mr Byron (Mr. Personality) managing the customer line was rude & disrespectful to the women in my group. Worst car rental experience ever. I waited with my family for over 20 mins for the dollar shuttle to come by....Hertz driver felt sorry for us so he allowed us to hop on b/c Dollar rental was across the street from Hertz. Line was out the door, about 35-40 people deep at dollar rental. After a 1 hour and 20 mins standing in line, we had another 30-40 min wait to pick up our vehicle. Not worth the wait. Next time I'll pay a little more at Budget or Hertz car rental. Wait times are unacceptably long wishes I gotten my car elsewhere. read more

waited over half an hour in line and when we finally got the keys we were extremely disappointed in receiving a gas guzzler versus the economy car we had reserved. the agent was dishonest and never mentioned it to us. when we returned back to the counter she said we would have to wait another 20 minutes. then she said she assumed we wanted an upgrade . we asked to speak to the manager whom she said was across the street at Hertz. When I got to hertz the manager Caroline said I was rude because I'm not acting Hawaiian . The manager was very discriminatory , basically stating that if I wasn't Hawaiian I shouldn't act the way I was. I only had one day on Kauai & my time was precious to me and I shouldn't have had to resolve this if I had only received the vehicle i initially had booked. Basically she was saying if you're upset then you ain't Hawaiian . now I had spent over an hour just picking up the car I should have received in the first place. Dollar should hire more agents and fulfil the vehicle you reserve or they should train the agents to be up front instead of misleading. read more

A very poor experience with Theresa. Booked a mid size 2 months ago with a pick up on 2'11/25. I waited in line for an hour and was unfortunate to have to deal with Theresa- rude, unpleasant, un-sympathetic, and a bold faced lier. She told me that I was getting an Altima and gave me a pick up spot on their lot. Got to the car and it was a bright red Charger. I went back inside to explain her error and she literally, and ungraciously told me that was the only car there and essentially told me to beat sand. I DO NOT like large cars and it was too large to park where I was staying. My wife and I went back to the airport later that evening and luckily Theresa wasn't there. The 2 gals working were wonderful and has us in a Versa in 10 minutes. This morning I realized that I had left my favorite sweater in the original rental. I spent 30 plus minutes trying to call the office with no luck. It takes an hour to get there and back. We went by the office this morning and unfortunately had to deal with Theresa again. No help again and told us the car had been rented- another blatent lie. We search the lot and found the Charger and were fortunate that it was unlocked. No sign of the sweater ($500 Alan Paine cashmere). We went back in the office and told her we found the car, and she was irritated that we did so and told us that we violated their policy by doing so. I think her anger was that she was caught in yet another lie. At that point she told us to contact corporate and walked away. Wow, wow, wow, how does this "customer service" person keep their job. This is my last rental with any of the Hertz associate brands. I am angry, but of greater importance, I don't like being lied to and summarily dismissed. SHAME ON HERTZ! Hertz and Theresa work for their customers, not themselves. read more

I arrived in Kauai for a much anticipated vacation - had booked my trip online. When I arrived at Dollar after my long flight, I discovered that I had forgotten my driver's license (I used my passport to board the plane). Though I had a photo of my license that showed all of the pertinent information, they refused to accept that. I showed them a photo of my active vehicle insurance, and that made no difference. I spent an hour online (went to Hertz to get a WiFi signal, as Dollar had none) with my State DMV, trying to get an "official confirmation" that I had an active DL... no luck. I had to take a cab to my hotel; have been without transportation (save for calling a cab), for my entire week in Kauai - and Dollar has charged me the ENTIRE amount of the rental (nearly $600) and refuses to give me a refund. NEVER book with Dollar rent a car - tell your friends - they care nothing about their customers... only want to rip us off! read more

There is zero in person contact at pick up or drop off. You pick up and drop off in a deserted parking lot away from the airport, closer to the cruise ships, using a lockbox. The uber ride airport to lot and reversed at the drop off was less than $40 total. We had one person get the car and pick up the others and all luggage. It was not a far distance, but not walkable. Lucky for us the rental was exactly as hoped for and we would repeat the experience if we are lucky enough to visit Kauai in the future. It is one of the 4 car agencies that Costco travel uses, and like the other times we used them, it turned out just fine. Budget started out in 1958, and became part of the Avis Budget Group in 2002. It has over 1,300 locations in the U.S., with quite a few outside of airports (where the cost can be lower). This location in Lihue is part of the airport complex, within walking distance of the airport curb, but also providing frequent shuttle service. I booked a week rental (since once you pass 4 days, it is just as cheap to rent for a week) through Delta Travel this time (mainly to get matching MQDs), and didn't have to prepay. Using a Sapphire Reserve credit card meant getting primary collision/comprehensive insurance automatically. Budget does not charge for a second driver if spouse, and doesn't require their identification. Thus, I took off after deplaning, to see if I could beat the rush of people to get in line. Ended up walking to the location with luggage: wouldn't recommend it, just better to take the frequent shuttle. There were 3-4 associates working the counter, but the car rental just takes time so ended up waiting in line for a bit. My fastbreak number did not transfer through, as I later found out, so not standing in the fastbreak line was the right call. My biggest issue was that after I was done checking in, was told to wait at the curb for the car to be brought to me in 5-10 minutes. Ended up being almost 40 minutes...just wish I had been told that upfront. Got a Chevy Impala, which ended up being a good car for the week, as long as you stay on paved roads. Returning the car was similar to other busy locations: the check-in folks couldn't keep up with returns, so just told us to leave the key and go (didn't ask us any questions). I'm always hesitant about doing this (just feel better if I can get a receipt stating that I returned it on-time, and full)...but there really isn't much choice. I did get a receipt about 1 hour after the return, with the charged price being about $4 over the quoted. The shuttle driver to the terminal was pleasant and helpful, which made the last interaction with Budget being an agreeable one.

You sign a waiver & agree not to go off roading or use dirt roads for beach access. I was a bit nervous about accidently ending up on a dirt road (I'm a very cautious person by nature) but using Google maps & satellite view, I was always able to find paved areas to park. In one case, we just hiked in a little further and that's always a bonus in paradise to me :) Their communication is so good, I'm sure if you have a question about a specific area before you head there - they can guide you on whether or not it's ok or offer an alternate plan. We had tracked in a bit of sand, so before returning the vehicle we shook out the weatherproof mats - which were so easy & handy! They were great and brought my husband back to our hotel vs. the airport as we were not quite ready to head home yet. From start to end our experience was amazing. Provided a map of the island and driving tips. Even gave us a restaurant suggestion. Upon rental car return a week later, the agent did a walk around; checked the gas gauge; issued an email receipt. I wished all car rentals were as smooth as this one was.

After I returned the car, the staff cleared it during the walk-around. No issues. No mention of damage. Then I disputed the insurance charge and got it refunded. Two days later, I receive an email claiming there's damage to the vehicle. I called to discuss it. The damage department won't speak to customers--apparently that's their policy. When I questioned how suspicious that sounded, the rep laughed and hung up on me. Called back and got a different rep who said the first one left no notes. Now I'm fighting with this company over damage I didn't cause, with no way to actually resolve it. Stay away from this company. Look on Google and see what people say about sixt. It's disgusting.

Because of this, I was able to go straight to the Alamo vehicle lot to pick up the white Jeep Wrangler. I would also like to note the high level of hospitality and friendliness from all of the staff members, from check-in to the exit booth. I even had the opportunity to interact with the manager, Tobias. I had a question regarding adjusting the steering wheel, and he was extremely pleasant and helpful.
