I make pizzas/flatbreads daily, including a breakfast flatbread. Occasionally I will even do one with a charcoal crust. As fate would have it, I stumbled across a spot serving these same items at the farmers market in Studio City. There were a ton of hot and cold food options at the market, but i knew immediately what i needed in my face. The "Hangover Breakfast Pizza". Complete with sausage, bacon, sun dried tomato and a fried egg (I mean... what breakfast is complete w/o a fried egg? Amirite?!). The sauce was good with lots of garlic, and oregano flavor and the charcoal crust while mostly aesthetic, does bring something different to the party for something more unique than your traditional pizza experience. The sundried tomato adds a depth of flavor to the sauce, but doesnt really stand on it's own as a topping. The egg was slightly undercooked with the whites still translucent towards the center. A properly cooked egg is hard to pull off in a hot oven, so it's hard to fault them for it, but undercooked eggs aren't particularly appetizing. The main issue was the excessive cheese. Blasphemous, I know. Who doesnt love an extra cheezy pizza? Well... apparently this guy. Extra cheese on your pie is always viewed as a bonus, but when you pile it too high before baking the crust doesnt cook through all the way, and it hinders the cook on the egg in the center by blocking heat from all sides. The result in this case was a floppy slice on *mostly* cooked dough with an undercooked egg. To be fair this was an execution issue and not one with the dish itself, and as someone who makes a similar dish often, I certainly understand. Though I could see why this could be unappealing for some.
The concept is fun, the staff is very friendly and to be honest I'm a bit jealous of their mobile pizza oven rig. The execution could have used a little tightening up, but overall it was a perfectly fine experience at Dolce Nero. If I happened across them again, I would absolutely order the same thing and give them another chance to nail it.
ProTip: A little green onion/chive garnish on a breakfast pizza goes a long way. Take that for what it's worth.
