I have never been more disappointed with a business. About six months ago, I decided to try this doggy daycare after hearing great things about it from people at MADACC. Since I'm new to the downtown area, the location seemed perfect between work and school. The staff were welcoming, asked thorough questions, and I quickly scheduled an evaluation for my dog, Scooby. On the first evaluation day, I was told to come back later because there were no dogs he was "meshing with." It seemed a little odd, but I didn't think much of it. The next day, Scooby returned excited and ready to play. During the evaluation, he grabbed a slip leash that a staff member was wearing around her body and tugged on it. Based on that incident alone, they denied him and told me to return after he had "more training." As someone who has worked in a dog daycare myself, I found that reasoning questionable. Wearing slip leads around your body can create safety risks regardless of how well-trained a dog is. Additionally, I had recently invested over $2,000 in a board-and-train program that Scooby completed successfully. Being told he needed more training felt dismissive and unfair. Nevertheless, I accepted their decision and moved on. Fast forward to today. Scooby has continued his training and has made significant progress. Unfortunately, he has since developed occasional patellar luxation. Multiple veterinarians have evaluated him and cleared him for normal activities. They have also advised that if his knee slips out, it can be safely placed back into position and have not recommended surgery at this time. When I brought Scooby back for reevaluation, I was completely transparent about his condition. What made the experience even more frustrating was that I waited over 15 minutes before a staff member even came out to interact with him. After that wait, only a short amount of time was spent discussing his condition before I was told they could not evaluate or accept him because of the possibility of his knee dislocating during play. It felt as though the decision had already been made before he was given a fair chance. At this point, it feels like every time I have brought Scooby in, a new reason has been found to deny him. First it was a leash-tugging incident, then it was his medical condition. As someone with experience working in dog daycare environments, I understand that safety is important. However, every daycare environment has inherent risks that must be managed. The facility itself uses portable crates lined along the walls of the play areas, and staff members wear and handle equipment around dogs. Those are operational risks that come with running any daycare. It was difficult to understand why Scooby was repeatedly singled out when risk management is a normal part of the job. Meanwhile, Scooby regularly attends another daycare and boarding facility in my hometown without issue, frequents dog parks, and has interacted successfully with dogs and people of all ages. Even complete strangers have been comfortable interacting with him and helping him when his knee occasionally slips. I understand businesses must make decisions they believe are best for their staff and facility. However, after two separate attempts, two completely different reasons for denial, and a reevaluation that never truly felt like an evaluation at all, I am left feeling frustrated and unwelcome. I hate to play the breed discrimination card but he is a large American bully boxer breed with cropped ears. I genuinely wanted this facility to work out because of its convenient location and the positive things I had heard beforehand. Unfortunately, my experience has been the opposite. We love Dogtopia! My one year old golden retriever, Pebbles, has been going to Dogtopia for a bit over four months and she loves it!! She plays all day, comes home, and sleeps until the next morning. I highly recommend Dogtopia for all of your dog needs. For all you daycare dog parents: you will love having access to the camera to check in on your pups throughout the day. Also, the events, crafts, and photos shoots that the staff puts on are so creative and fun! The picture attached is the 414 photo shoot earlier this year. The best thing about the staff (besides how friendly they are), is that they are trained extremely well on how to work with dogs. I never have to worry about any issues. Besides daycare, my dog also gets her grooming and nail trims done here, which are so easy to schedule during days she already attends daycare. I have been so incredibly excited for Dogtopia East Side to open! It is a completely brand new facility, and it's been pretty fun to watch all the details go in over the past few months. Even before the grand opening, Julie and her team have been out and about at all the dog events in the city, meeting the dogs of Milwaukee, and proving how much they love dogs! (And humans too :D) The facility: Did I mention that it's brand-spanking new?? There are so many great conscientious decisions that went into the construction and details of the place. There are three rooms: 1) Toy room for the smaller doggos, 2) Romper for the bigger doggos, and 3) Gym which they have been using for senior doggos so far. Every room has a dedicated webcam that you can watch from their app. There is a dog mascot in the front has textures to show off the astro turf (that is the closest thing to grass ever!), the bouncy rubberized flooring to preserve joint health, and also has artistic elements that are Milwaukee-specific. The HVAC system keeps fresh air flowing in, and I was told is purer than the air outside! All dogs must be fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered. It makes me feel safe leaving her with the other dogs knowing that they're all vaccinated. The people: The trainers are always interacting with the dogs, and cleaning up after the dogs. Julie, the owner, is so kind and so excited to see every dog come in in the morning. She currently has been the main person doing curbside pick-up! The cleaning products are made in-house and are 100% pet-safe without bleach, and has a great scent to it. There's an event calendar for the month for other enriching activities. So glad Dogtopia is open for the East Side doggos, and what a wonderful to boot. P.S. Dogtopia is the best, and this location is SPECTACULAR! It is clear that owner and staff are friendly and truly care about the pets and their owners. We were visiting from out of town and needed daycare because of an injury that had occurred the day before. They were incredibly accommodating, even calling our vet to get his vaccine information for us. Dogtopia is fantastic. I think this may be our dogs favorite place so far! The staff are all amazing people, it seems well staffed in general (appropriate amount of people watching the dogs in the play rooms). They run various fun events like themed photo shoots (for $5)....how can you pass on that? They have cameras which allows you to watch your dog play. My dogs come back happy and tired. Prior places we tried, the one dog would come back hoarse from barking all day, but not once at Dogtopia. The dogs also get a play break during the day which I think helps my two immensely. I called because I was looking for somewhere to get my dog in to get trained. I was happy when I seen it was close to my house. I called and the guy told me he would squeeze me in and told me he would contact me the next day to confirm the appointment. Here it is the next day never contacted me or even said he couldn't make it. Very unprofessional right away for just a consultation to meet with my dog and to see how things would go from there. I would not recommend this place at all. read more
