I have a 13yo Shih Tzu who, until recently, LOVED our long daily walks. He's fit and looks like the Apollo Creed of his breed. Sadly, Kairo suffers from heart disease, has to take 4 different meds, and wheezes when he breathes. He's now special needs. His regular groomer is not available due to a family emergency, then upgraded to no longer gro0ming. Kairo's hair was growing excessively, and he started to quickly mat which become increasingly uncomfortable. After calling dozens of groomers who had no dates available until Nov, I finally booked a next day appointment with Pet Smart. I explained Kai's fragility in concise detail, agreed to stay, and sign a waiver, but once I arrived, they treated us like we had the plague! The Manager resolved, but no way I was letting them touch my Kai. I sat in the car frustrated! Dear Lord, who has the kindness to groom special needs dogs? Google hears my question and provides a few choices. First up was THE DOGGIE WASHERETTE, which - I called based on the EXPERTISE listed on website and left a message. Then took a closer look, read the medical updates, and assumed she was not available. I asked God to continue blessing her journey and called a few others. About an hour later, SHE CALLED ME BACK! Ms. Ethyl explained her "specialization" with dogs in Kairo's condition, we made an appointment just 3 days later, and ...WOW! She treated Kai like he was a newborn baby! He looked and felt fabulous after she gently relieved him of all of his knots, filed his "stilettos" nails down so he can walk on his paw pads, even treated the yeast between his toes, and I was so incredibly THANKFUL! The Doggie Washerette is a magical place run by an unbelievably, amazing, human being - Ms. Ethyl. Kai was quietly knocked out 5 minutes into our ride home - feeling sensational. My dog, Winston, a 20 pound Schnoodle, left Doggie Washerette with patches of baldness all over his coat and the next day developed a terrible ear infection that cost me $120 to treat at the vet. The woman who owns the groomer is rude, difficult to deal with and argumentative. Upon letting her know of the situation, she shouted at me, refused to listen to me, and called me a liar -- rather than responding to my concern about the ear infection in an educated, professional manner. I have never felt as disrespected by a proprietor as I have with her. In addition to an over-priced grooming, a $120 vet bill and rudeness after the fact, the woman who owns the groomer accused me of "abusing" my dog (which is a very harsh allegation) as a result of some matting he had under his armpits. Doggie Washerette has been a horrifying experience for me, and I would caution anyone in my network to be aware of the bad business practices and lack of proper care in grooming. read more

I brought my dog Nigel in for a full-service grooming. He is a 13 lb pomeranian/terrier mix and has quite a bit of hair (he definitely inherited the pom coat). We are fairly new to DC and have been trying to identify a new groomer in the area. I will say I had some trouble setting up an appointment (the wrong phone number was listed on their website and so we played phone tag for a bit), but everything else about my experience was great. I dropped Nigel off for his 9am appointment and filled out paperwork. I had to provide proof that he was up-to-date on his rabies, distemper, and bordatella shots. I also had to fill out an extra piece of paper identifying him as a "senior" dog (my little old man!!!). Nigel was hiding under my chair during the paperwork portion of the process, but Ethel was very kind; she coaxed him out from under my seat so she could get a better look at his hair. She also brought him a dish of water and said he would be able to explore the space off-leash before it was his turn on the grooming table. She also asked me lots of clarifying questions about how I wanted him cut -- which is much appreciated. (When your dog only gets groomed quarterly, you sometimes forget the details about what you do and don't like done.) So while Nigel may have been unnecessarily worried, I was not. Fast forward to just before 2pm -- I received a call informing me that Nigel was done and ready to be picked up. When I got there, Nigel did not even seem interested in leaving (which is unusual for him). He was obviously very content. His lion cut is adorable and his hair smells so nice. I paid about market price for the full-service grooming but I think the attention to detail here is top-notch. Nigel and I will be back. Their setups for self-washing and self-grooming seemed very nice, so perhaps I will attempt to touch him up myself between haircuts. read more

Today was my first trip here. My 8 year old dog has an awful spring undercoat and needed a haircut before the warm weather gets here. He also has separation anxiety and doesn't do well at the groomers by himself. This was extant comforting for me abd since separation anxiety goes both ways I was less worried about him while he was there. Truth be told I never thought that I would go to some place to pay to wash my own dog. I can do that at home for free!! That said, I have to admit that I had a blast doing so at Doggie Washerette and I would definitely do it again. It's like washing the dog and playing with new toys that I did not have at home!! OBSERVE. . . First you put your dog in this washer thing and feed the machine $20 (cash or credit) and you have options of shampoo, flea shampoo, conditioner, and two settings of dryer. There's a timer on the machine but I was told that it's just there for decoration, we could take as long as I wanted. Hehe imagine the dog pleading with her eyes hoping that I don't take too long ;-) Next to these machines, you have your array of weaponry/brushes to use during the tub time. I don't quite know the difference between the different brushes but I was eager to find out!! After you are done with the clean machine, you can take your pup over to the grooming table for the cut and blow dry. Here you are presented with more weapons!! Blow dryer, brushes, trimming tools, scissors, tooth brushes, ear stuff, eye stuff and yes even body spray and nail polish. I had fun playing dog groomer and the dog was all tuckered out. A twenty dollar well spent for an afternoon of fun, plus you get a clean dog out of it!! Doggie Washerette now offers full grooming if you don't have the time or desire to get down and dirty :-) TO NOTE. . . Doggie Washerette is located right on Georgia Ave so there's plenty of street parking. I would recommend walking the pup near your place before you venture over but there's not a lot of grassy areas or trees near Doggie Washerette. And make sure to bring a towel for your car. . . Or you should if you're like me. I am never patient enough to complete blow dry my hair, much less an animal completely covered with hair/fur!! read more

This review is a bit late, but I'm as good a reviewer as I am a customer. Here are my transgressions: 1. Show up with a very furry golden doodle 1 hour before close on a Monday with intentions to wash and shave. 2. Not really know what I'm doing washing and shaving my golden doodle. 3. Shave doodle and make a tremendous mess that requires 3 vacuum loads to clean up. How was I treated? So well! The owner, whose name is escaping me at the moment, was not only patient with me and kind to my dog, she gave me some pointers on how to groom him and helped me with some of the trickier parts. She even let me stay past close so I could bathe him, and then charged me the pre-quoted amount. I'll be coming back. If she does a grooming class, I would do that too. read more

I was recently visiting Silver Spring from NYC with a very dirty Pomeranian and desperately wanted to find a place to wash him, but didn't know any local groomers. When I read the description of the Doggie Washerette, I was so excited and simultaneously wondered why I've never seen anything like this before in NYC - a total doggie loving city. I love grooming my dog, but it usually takes over my apartment and too much time at home. I brought my 4 yr old niece to help me out and we had an amazing experience. Ethel was super helpful and assisted me with brushing my Pom's teeth and trimming his nails before his wash. She even gave me advice on brushes to use and how to wash his face area. All in all it was a great bonding experience for me and my doggie and niece, I am definitely coming back when I am back in the area. read more

I brought my dog, Louie, in today for a full groom. He isn't just my dog, he is my love and my child. I was nervous about dropping, Louie, off ANYwhere. His prior groomer, was mobile and would come to our house, so I could be right there with him. He's a registered Service Animal, and comes everywhere with me - we both have a bit of separation anxiety. The moment I walked into the facility, I was put to ease. There were two dogs (from the same household), that had already been groomed, in one corner, and they were COMPLETELY content and happy. I then found out this was their first time there. To me, that shows a lot. I had been putting, Lou's, groom off, bc I was in search of the perfect place. I didn't want him to be traumatized. Like I said, we rarely are apart. Since I had put it off, he was overgrown and parts of his fur were matted. I gave them "permission", or better yet, put my full trust into them, to do what would be most comfortable for Louie, so if they needed to shave him, i said that would be fine- just to use their best judgement. When I got there (only 2.5 hours later!), I was amazed at how beautiful he looked. He smells wonderful, they brushed his teeth, cut his nails, expelled his anal glands, cut him and gave him a Thorough bath. They also dried him. They had to shave some of his body, but left his face and tail. Have I mentioned he looks FANTASTIC? I'm so pleased and recommend, Doggie Washerette, to any and all my family, friends and loved ones. I will, most certainly, be back to bring my pooch for all of his grooming needs. The place is fully equipped for all your dog washing needs and then some, with a wide variety of different shampoos for different conditions such as dry skin, excessive shedding, etc. on top of all of this she freely provides you with additional information regarding maintenance of your dog's coat and skin such as pH balance and other issues. I took my dog to Doggie Washerette for the first time today. I am new(ish) to this area of DC, and have been looking for a groomer. I am so glad I tried this place, because this was probably the best grooming shop I've been in, and I am pretty picky about where I take my pup. I came in and dropped my pup, Ruby, off at 9 AM, and Esther was there. She let Ruby run around and sniff to get comfortable, which no other groomer has ever done before. Esther spent a few minutes talking to me about Ruby, and the dry skin that she has experienced, which has caused her a lot of discomfort and scratching, and we have had a hard time getting control of. The shop itself was clean, and relaxing. I picked Ruby up a few hours later, and she looked and smelled great! Esther gave me some advice to take better care of her skin, and said it would probably be a good idea to bring her back in a few weeks, just to get a bath and condition again. Normally, I would find this a ploy to just bring me back sooner than I need to, but this time I do not think that is what it was. She was genuine about teaching me how to improve Ruby's skin condition. She said I can come back and do the self serve, and she will help me to make sure I use the correct shampoo/conditioner. Overall, everything about this visit was great, and it was more affordable than most of the other groomers I have found in the Brightwood area. Very highly recommend. read more

I brought my doxie for a nail trim, she is hard as nails when it comes to doing her nails. But the groomer was sooooo patient with us! She even gave tips to calm down this diva doxie. The owner was very nice and helpful, and she also made it so easy for me to wash the dog with little kids in tow. She popped a Snoopy DVD in the player and gave them balloons. I brought my dog in here after reading Yelp reviews. They were all spot on regarding how awesome this place was and how wonderful Ethyl and her staff are! I have a spitz type dog who has a very thick and dense undercoat. I had her professionally groomed early spring and while the groomer did a fantastic job with deshedding her, it was over $120 dollars. Her undercoat was shedding again and I really needed to have her groomed but did not want to pay another $120 so I thought I would give doggie washerette a try and I am so glad that I did. The dog washing machinery is fantastic, since she is a double coated dog it's difficult to get her properly wet, but not with the k9000, it has a sprayer that doesn't spray hard but rather delivers a generous amount of water with a wide spray. It was a breeze getting the dog washed. Ethyl and her assistant were fantastic with advice and so helpful without being intrusive. I spent about and hour and a half there mainly because I spent a ton of time removing her undercoat. What I LOVED about this place is if you didn't need a long grooming session, you can wash and blow dry right in the k9000 and be out very quickly. read more

I've been to other self serve dog washes in NW DC and silver spring but this one is the best. staff is friendly and helpful and they also offer partial or full grooming if you call ahead. The other self serve places have just a few tools but this one gives you access to grooming tables and tons of grooming tools, sprays, and brushes. My dog looks great when we leave for $20 + tip. Street parking always easy in front. Only tip is to call before u go--on occasion they've not been open during normal hours. read more

Though we're closer to Furgetmenot, we drive out to Silver Spring for the great service and perks offered by Doggie Washerette--all for $20! Here's what makes it great: (1) Fantastic hands-on service. They help you find the best tools and products to use on your dog and make sure you have all the time you need--no time limits! This is crucial for our fluffy dog who takes forever to dry. (2) De-shedding before washing: Before you put your dog in the tub, they offer you a grooming table to brush your dog/ strip its undercoat. For us, this makes all the difference in the world! We take 20 min or so to thoroughly brush our dog, and he is much cleaner in the end! Great local business. Easy to park on the street close by. Try it! read more

A complete godsend. I just adopted a long-haired puppy and was very concerned about washing him in my 1BR apartment. Instead we went to Doggie Washerette, and all my fears were alleviated! The staff is incredibly friendly, and they have _everything_ available - ear wipes, toothpaste, brushes of all types, etc. They also walk you through the entire process - something I really appreciated as a first-time dog washer! I learned a ton about how to hold my dog so I could brush his teeth, how to dry him so he wouldn't freak out, etc. They also have a frequent-washer program (buy 10 washes, get one free). This is a wonderful, local business with a wonderful staff. I brought my dog here and it was quick and easy to get him clean from head to tail! I loved the K9000, having the shampoo come out at the same time as the water is a great idea. The owner helped me with everything and even helped me train my dog to not be afraid so that next time it is easier to keep him calm. The Doggie Washerette is so fantastic that I'm creating a Yelp account JUST to rave about them - that's how positive an experience it was thanks to the great team there. I brought my still new-from-the-shelter, 1-year-old husky mix there on a Friday afternoon right after work after a nice long walk to tire him out a bit. The staff was INCREDIBLE - I explained our newness and that I wasn't sure how he would react. In response, they were helpful and kind. They talked me through the process with great tips and suggestions and it worked! He came out a clean and hug-able dog. When I thanked them for all their advice, they said that it is an unstated motto of theirs that they're 'there to help you take even better care of your dog'; very sweet & they really did! If you are in a similar situation/ a first-timer, some things I learned: * I picked a good time as I was the only DIY-washer there as folks were still getting home from work - you can call ahead to see if it's busy or not. * Take a minute to explain your situation to the staff - it keeps everyone safe and they will help set your pup up for a successful and positive experience. * If your pup is fidgety, you can apply the conditioner without rinsing the 'Berry-Clean Shampoo' off to save a step. (and I'm glad I didn't skip the conditioner - it rinsed well so that he's soft without attracting more dirt) * Lastly, I came in with an open mind, which for me included that I was totally okay with it if we had to cut our losses and end his bath early if it wasn't going well - this kept me upbeat and positive about the experience so it wasn't stressful for me or for my dog. Other items to note - not only do you get great customer service, you'll have as much shampoo, conditioner, etc., brushes, washcloths and towels as you need - that made it a deal for me! It was also super clean there and the large poodle that was there being professionally groomed seemed to be enjoying it. In the end, my dog did pretty well for his first bath and it was even fun (for me that is!). Also, I imagine that he behaved better there than he would have if had I washed him in my bathtub at home. I wouldn't have been able to dry him with my little hairdryer either. The Doggie Washerette & team is amazing. What a great little business to have in our neighborhood. This is the best place we have been. Our dog Petey can sometimes be quite spoiled and fussy when it comes to his grooming and let me tell you when we were told that they had no idea why we were worried I knew we had picked the right place.
