The Result: One dog with kidney disease being given incorrect medication (Chemotherapy). Another dog being given the wrong dosage of Chemotherapy. Disrupted Wedding/Honeymoon. Large vet bills being covered by their insurance. Doggie Latchkey refusing to issue a full refund. The Experience: We hired Doggie Latchkey since they had great reviews, were allegedly professionals, and were fully insured for any issues that may occur. We were going to be gone for one week for our Wedding/Honeymoon in Mexico. The initial dog sitter came the night before and was quite good after we showed her exactly what to do with medications and feeding. We gave her emergency contacts and an extremely organized, color-coded feeding/pee/medication schedule. We were told she would be there every day and night for the first half of the week, and the second half of the week she would be back at nights/mornings for the feeding and medications. What happened is that we were told without any warning that the second nanny would be taking over completely from the initial nanny. This is someone we've never met and hadn't personally shown how to take care of our three dogs, all of which have medical issues. We tried to facetime her the first morning she was working to make sure she didn't have any questions about the routine, however she seemed frustrated we were calling and seemed as if she wanted to get off the phone as quickly as possible and told us to call the owner of the company, Denise. We only called her at the request of the nanny and asked why the sudden change in nanny's while we were talking to her. She ended up being quite rude to my wife and suggested that if we have someone, we know that could take care of our dogs that we should call them. On our last day in Mexico, we received a phone call from the nanny saying she gave Chemotherapy to the dog with Kidney Disease rather than the one that needed Chemo. The sitter was not prepared for this situation, did not know about the Pet Poison Hotline, nor had a way to pay for the $60 fee for a case number from them that the vet required. We had to coordinate the point help line and the emergency vets from Mexico. The nanny got to the vet 1.5 hours later rather than the 20 minutes it usually takes to drive there. We had to book the first flights we could tend to our dogs. Upon talking to the vet, it turns out this was the second time they had been in contact with here. She had apparently given too much Chemo to our dog that was prescribed it and was seeking advice 3 days prior. Same story from our regular vet, but she kept mixing up names on the call, so we are unsure if she knew which dog was which. When we arrived home the house smelled horribly. Upon reviewing our cameras around the house, the second sitter didn't follow the pee schedule we laid out (which was needed due to the frequent urination of our dog with Kidney disease), so the dogs would wake up earlier than her and pee and poop around the house. The nanny picked up poop but didn't clean up the pee. They insurance was a pleasure to work with. They covered all the vet expenses that we racked up, however informed us they can't reimburse us for the pet sitting expenses, that's on Doggie Latchkey's end. After trying to request a refund on a poor service on a call with their Director of Operations we were only met with equally poor customer service, we were told they were willing to refund $450 of the $1304 we were charged claiming they did an adequate job of taking care of our dogs, until Denise the owner called us again and was extremely nice about it and was quite remorseful and so mortified about what happened. We were issued the Full Refund of $1,304. In the end Denise came through and acted professional in her communication, and willing to work with their customers to make things right. read more

Until recently, I'd had a decent experience with them. The major issue for me was rotating sitters otherwise, they had been timely and provided feedback from their visits. I've appreciated how they've typically communicated- providing arrival time and pics of the walk. Last week, a sitter didn't show and I thought I'd booked incorrectly on the site. Denise insisted that the sitter had shown up. The company has a separate code to enter my house. Entry into my house is logged and notification is sent to me. None of that happened and the sitter did not contact me that she was at the house or send pics which has been the company's protocol. Denise suggested maybe the visit log just didn't transfer to me but she had it. The alarm system also didn't detect entry. She suggested that perhaps my door and my security systems just malfunctioned at that particular time. Willing to believe something other than willful deceit, I opened and closed doors multiple times to see if there was ever a failure to detect this. Obviously both systems were working. Plus, the sitter on the prior day was logged. I appreciate Denise's loyalty to her employees however when she attempted to provide documentation of the alleged visit with photos from a prior visit in August, I became extremely concerned about their professionalism to say the very least. When I notified her that the pics were dated (providing proof that my dog had in fact grown her summer cut and that I had the same pics from the sitter from her prior visit), there were other excuses regarding the pics ("maybe they sent the wrong ones", "maybe they didn't transfer correctly") but no apology or concern that there was an attempt to deceive or any concern regarding how unsafe this seemed. The sitter who reportedly wanted to meet with me and was very upset up about this per Denise, did not respond when I asked what happened. This sitter has stayed in my house and also with my daughter, so this situation has left us rattled and feeling a bit unsafe. Perhaps this was a momentary lapse on Denise's part since there are so many positive reviews. Just be aware. Had she handled the situation appropriately and maybe acknowledged a scheduling error, I probably would've continued to use them. At the very least, she didn't take responsibility for her employee's deceit. At the worst, she also lied. Good luck! read more

We scheduled with Doggie Latchkey to look after our pug-a-poo, Oscar. This was to begin with a meet-and-greet in our home. We live in La Salle Gardens, on a very safe block. The sitter said she did a "drive by" and didn't feel safe because there is an abandoned house next to ours. This person didn't even have the decency to knock on our door to discuss it with us. Mind you, our home is very nice. It's outfitted with a state-of-the-art security system, neatly appointed, clean, and nicely landscaped. Because I, a very professional person who enjoys being successful, can't conceive of a grown person being scared of an abandoned house, I can't figure out if the would-be pet sitter is actually too lazy to take the job, or perhaps uncomfortable in a black neighborhood. Whatever her reasoning, lacking the human decency to even arrive at the scheduled time to discuss this issue tells me everything I need to know about the quality of this company. read more

We visit Michigan several times a year and needed a dog sitter to visit at various times. We found Doggie Latchkey from the Yelp reviews (so thank you fellow Yelpers!). Linda has been visiting with our older Vizsla, Tango, several different times. First off, the data points: Doggie Latchkey sets up an initial meeting with your dog sitter which is very informative and follows a comprehensive process to clearly inform you about their organization and how things work. They make it very easy to submit payment electronically and schedule appointments through their website. You receive a confirmation so you have comfort knowing they have you on the schedule. We haven't needed one yet, but they have a backup dog sitter in case your primary sitter is unavailable. That's important for us because we have prescribed days and times when we need sitting. They were responsive to our inquiries from the start - also important for communication and knowing plans are firmly on the schedule. And now to my most important part of the review: Our dog sitter, Linda, and her relationship with our Tango. Tango is 12 years old, a bit finicky in his older years and doesn't warm up to strangers easily. Linda took the initial meeting in stride observing him and his peculiarities. She is very comfortable around dogs and understands that they come with different personalities. Anyone can hang out with an easy-going, super friendly dog. But it takes a real dog-lover truly develop a close and trusting relationship with one that is not as gregarious. They have had several visits now and get along wonderfully! The peace of mind it provides us is priceless. Linda also sends us detailed text updates after their visits with pictures of their escapades. I highly recommend Doggie Latchkey.
