Dog Mountain was one of the highlights of our recent 12-day New England road trip, and in fact, it became our No. 2 favorite destination, and only surpassed by Acadia National Park in the No. 1 position. If you are a dog lover and/or dog owner, this is a place for you. First, you can bring your dog(s), on a leash or without, and let them run free (except in the gift shop... there, they must be on a leash)... but outside where the air is so fresh, the terrain is beyond beautiful, they can run around to their hearts' content. In addition to the breathtaking grounds, there is also an exceptional gift shop filled with all kinds of things from clothing to furniture and everything in between... all about dogs and all designed by Stephen Huneck, the creator and owner of Dog Mountain. In addition to this great gift shop is a Dog Chapel, also created by Mr. Huneck. It is a very beautiful, spiritual homage to dogs... a place where people of all faiths and walks of life can gather to reflect on the love of their dog(s)... living or departed. When I say there were THOUSANDS of post-it notes and pictures of dogs, I think I may be way off... maybe MILLIONS, plastered on all of the walls of the interior of the chapel. Truly amazing and inspiring. I felt bad because I didn't realize we could bring our own photos to affix, but maybe if we ever return, I certainly will bring some. I did, however, write a message to our dearly departed doggies in a big notebook. I couldn't help it, but I cried buckets while there. It's okay cuz I wasn't alone, to be sure. It is DEEPLY moving, and while it was very sad for us, it is also very uplifting, too, because it's a place to honor your loving dog(s). I heartily encourage you to visit whether you live locally in St. Johnsbury, in the State of Vermont, on the east coast, or from wherever you reside, if you are a dog lover, you need to go !! I absolutely love this place. There is no requirement for leashes and more than enough room for the fur babies to get that energy out! They just put up a fenced in park which is nicer for the dogs who are unable to roam off leash. There are amazing views all throughout the mountain, there are also multiple small hiking trails that are well marked and maintained. Everyone who I have met here has been very friendly including the staff, dogs and other individuals. Although every time I walk into the dog chapel my eyes begin to water, the pictures and notes for the pets who have passed is so unbelievably special. I think the idea of letting the community/visitors be able to give their special friend a memorial that will be seen is something very important. It is completely FREE to go and hangout at the mountain, donations are accepted and most definitely appreciated. read more

Dog Mountain itself was SUPER cool and I wish we could have brought our pup with us - but we flew from Texas so that wasn't in the cards for us this time. The chapel is super cool and very different than anything else we have experienced. There is also plenty of space for your dog to roam and play here. I know there are a lot of regulars. You can bring a photo of your dog and place it inside the chapel, there is neat stained glass inside too. Its a once of a kind experience. And yes, it is that but more. The story of the Dog Chapel dates back to 1998 when artist Stephen Huneck died and was resuscitated five minutes later. When he returned home after the experience, he wanted to "build a chapel, one that celebrated the spiritual bond we have with our dogs, and that would be open to dogs and people. People of any faith or belief system." The chapel is pretty much a small village church complete with white steeple, stained glass windows and altar. The entire interior is covered with handwritten notes and photographs of dogs that have passed on. I got a little emotional myself and was fortunately alone at the time to be able to appreciate what was happening here. I wrote my own note to my passed dog, found a slightly bare spot on the wall, and added it to the growing collection. There are signs on Route 2 and it's easy enough to access though some of the road is gravel that may be a challenge for some vehicles. Dog Mountain holds a special place in my heart, and always will. If you're a dog lover, owner, or have recently lost your best friend this place will soothe your soul. I found Dog Mountain looking for places to take my best friend for an off-leash romp. Once we finally made it there I didn't realize we had such little time left together. That's another story for another time, though. Dog Mountain is a sanctuary or refuge that is sponsored by a famous painter (now his foundation). There is an art gallery, a chapel that serves as a memorial for all the lost furkids in the world, and a LOT of land that is all off-leash if your dog is friendly. You can go and get some really cute and relevant artwork for an office or a playroom, go for a nice hike with your family or furkid, honor your lost friend or family member with a picture/note/memorial, or just take in the scenery. The place speaks to me on so many different levels that if I lived closer it would likely be a weekly trip. However, whenever we go we buy something to continue to support what they are doing because we so firmly believe in it. We also found out they do live music and events here to help raise funds for the foundation and maintenance. While we have yet to attend any of these, they are on our to-do list and we will be back soon. If you like/love dogs and enjoy the outdoors, go visit Dog Mountain and I challenge you not to feel a strong set of emotions throughout your visit. A must do!! Absolutely worth the drive. This is one of the most unique and amazing places I've ever been to. It really is a dog paradise and everything is dog friendly, including the chapel and store. You can let your dog roam free and off-leash on their property which features a pond, field with toys, and hiking trails. The chapel was beautifully heartbreaking with photos and letters from owners to their lost, beloved family pups. The pews were shaped like dogs on either side and the stained glass windows glistened with bright pieces, forming pictures of heavenly canines. The store was cute and had artwork for sale by one talented artist. All in all- this was an ethereal experience not to be missed. Take the drive. It's worth it. I PROMISE. OH! Dog Mountain is probably the happiest place on Earth. I went there with my husband and puppy and everything is just so beautiful. The gallery was amazing along with the chapel (I left a note for my angel puppy Chuck), and then the trails were something else. One of the most beautiful and memorable places in the NEKingdom, with or without a dog by your side. Leavitt Amp concerts during the summer are simply wonderful with little ones and big ones dancing, dogs everywhere, good food at pop-up trucks and the scenery can't be beat sitting on the side of a gently sloping hill. Music is always a plus. :) Lots and lots of open space for dogs and their people to roam and enjoy being out in nature, along with beautiful trails to follow. The chapel is a sweet place, a place to reflect on all your happy moments with your much-loved animals, past and present. Never a problem finding parking, people are nice. I love the Sally books and gift shop choices. Definitely worth the visit, at least once, or maybe a dozen times. Nothing like being out in the country to make all the chaos float out of your life, at least for a little while. Each season at Dog Mountain has its own special offerings. read more

What a great tribute to our 4 legged friends. We were in the Quechee area and stopped in on our way home. Had heard this is a place to visit with our yellow lab so had to check it out. Very moving notes from many dog owners posted in the walls of the chapel. It was a drizzly/windy day so we didn't spend a lot of time outside. A cute gift shop that contained many pieces of art devoted to dogs. We would have thought the attendant would be more friendly and helpful but she wasn't. She didn't even seem to thrilled to see our lab either which we thought was strange for a setting that's so welcoming to pets. 5 stars for the venue and maybe 3 for the attendant. read more

This is a unique place to lay the souls of dogs to sleep. It's a chapel where hundreds if not thousands of grieving dog owners have left messages and photos of their dearly beloved pets. Adjoining this there is an art gallery dedicated to selling the art of Stephen Huneck who dies some years ago. Mostly prints but also some originals and some really clever sculptural pieces. It is a certain style that may appeal to some, especially if you see your dog represented here among his pictures of the breeds. There is tons of parking. I remember this place being very remote but it is worth a detour if you're in the area. It's really unexpected, as the landscape seems so wild and untamed, you don't expect to see a dog chapel and dog art gallery right there. Enjoy it while you can! read more

It was a very nice walk around Dog Mountain with my 4 legged friends. They just put in a playpen so puppies and dogs who like to take off and not come back are easily controlled. Very nice atmosphere. Gorgeous views. The chapel is so comfortable. Enjoy a good outing for the day. read more

Very nice hike. I had a different impression of how this was set up from the website. It's definitely a lot of uphill (yup, it's a mountain) and there were some very muddy sections. The trails vary in difficulty. We went on one where you had to hold onto a rope to cross a stream but it wasn't that dangerous. Very buggy in some sections. My dog loved it. We ran into several dog walkers and the dogs had a blast playing in the grass. There didn't seem to be any truly open field areas for dogs to play together, just trails heading up. The view was amazing and I definitely would love to go in the fall to see all of the colors. Plenty of parking when we were there on a Saturday afternoon. Worth stopping and walking around if you're in the area as it's free to visit. read more

After driving through Saint Johnsbury we saw a sign for Dog Mountain on the side of the road. My husband had heard about this place before, so we turned off the highway and made our way to Dog Mountain. It was the cutes, sweetest, specialist place ever. There is a little white chapel where you can go and leave a picture of your dog that has passed away. You can leave a note with it too. There were pictures all over the walls and in photo albums. We left some notes of some special dogs in our lives that have passed. Outside there were statues of dogs. Such a special memorial. The gift shop had a bunch of paintings and pictures of dogs and cats. My daughter had to get a shirt of the place and we got a magnet to remember this place. So nice! read more

I came when in the area sans dog, on a rainy day, so missed the best of this. I think not worth the drive unless you have a canine companion with you. Went to the chapel which on a rainy day has a strong eau de dog. Also checked out the gift shop and bought some cards. There was the nicest chocolate lab there to greet you. You take a couple dirt roads to get here but they were well maintained and were not muddy despite the rain. That probably explains why the place is seasonal though. read more

This was an absolutely magical experience. My dog has probably never been happier to hike and roam off leash. The chapel is beautiful and will make any dog lover tear up. It's so nice to be able to honor our best friends. I came in March (mud season) and was still able to make it up the hill in my Honda Accord. Bring your pup here, you will not regret it! Quick tip: I'd avoid hiking the full yellow trail when it's not summer. I got twisted around quite a bit but we made it down the mountain safely. My dog wouldn't get in the car to go home, he laid down by the trunk and didn't want to leave. read more

Absolutely blown away with this place. As soon as we drove down the dirt road and caught a glimpse of the labrador columns, we knew this place was special and unlike any other gallery or church we had visited. We went this week (inbetween seasons) and had the gallery to ourselves. The views from the property were spectacular with mountains and trees overlooking St. Johnsbury. Stephen Huneck's carvings around the property brought instant happiness and beaming smiles to our face. For dog lovers and folk art fans, this is a must. Our only regret is not visiting here sooner with our beloved rescue lab Houston. We'll return with hiking shoes next year. There is a small mountain dedicated to dog fun in upper VT. This off-leash, open to dogs doors into a gallery gift shop area of the great outdoors is fun for all dogs and their persons. The peace and honor of the dog chapel is a meaningful respite while enjoying a frolic on the Mt trails and grounds. We were there with approximately 100 pups for a day long fundraiser event. The pups got to swim in the pond, and run up to the overlook where a fire hydrant decorates the viewpoint and dog angel obelisk stands tall as a reminder of all the dogs who've graced our lives in the past. We went to Dog Mountain in October with our beagle, and he loved it - so did we. The gallery of art they have is beautiful. They have prints, notecards, welcome mats, shirts - everything Dog Mountain you could think of. We went for a hike, they have three fabulous trails, then let him go for a (cold and short-lived) swim in one of their two ponds. The Dog Chapel was wonderful, which is a whole chapel where you can write notes to and about dogs that have passed. The walls are covered in bright sticky notes. Covered! During the summer, they have an agility course for the dogs to do, but during the colder months it isn't up. We were looking forward to it, but that's okay because we now know when to come back for it. One thing that annoyed me though, was the amount of dog poop that owners did not bother to pick up. They have dispensers with plastic bags, so there is no excuse. If you come here with your dog (which you definitely should!) please pick up their poop! Just got back from Vermont. Went to Dog Chapel and stayed at Lyndon Motor Lodge. 5 stars for both. I hear people talk of trips to Alaska and elsewhere. This vacation was "a best". Since I am from New Jersey I made it back with one 7+ hours of driving. If you have a dog, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAD A DOG WHO DIED, this is the Place to go. Stephen Huneck and his wife, Gwen, bought the property in 1995. They turned the barn into studio space. They then opened Dog Chapel on Memorial Day weekend of 2000. The mountain is covered with hiking trails and dog ponds. Snow-shoeing is a favorite activity in the winter.
