It's all set in a very tastefully restored half timber affair, with the grandfather clock out back still on time since who knows when. I had the fish stew based on a recommendation from James and Simon, a couple of regular patrons who can be found propping up the bar and in a few of South Cheshire's other CAMRA-approved establishments, and indeed, it was delicious. Young Adam behind the bar really knows his ales (6 on at any one time, 3 Weetwoods and other local guests) and samples come readily :o) Nice open fire in front bar, some clientelle can be a bit wooden at times and the place sometimes does not quite have the atmosphere it used to have when it was a rough and ready kind of place. We like the front table for people watching across the road at the Cat and Nakatcha, so stay off it! There is family seating at the rear of the building but kids have to leave by 8pm, there's a great choice of drinks real ale with 3/4 guest ales a month, spirits, cocktails and soft drinks. This place is fairly well looked after and quite big. They serve food until 10 but any children have to leave by 8pm. The food on the whole here is ok, but knowing that half the food is microwaved is never going to result in fantastic food. If you pick stuff that can't be microwaved then it's obviously a bit better!!! I do eat there regularly though so it obviously isn't that bad!! They do some great deals on both food and drinks and everything is cheap anyway!! There is an outside seating area for any smokers, and the staff are on the whole very friendly. On friday and saturday nights however, its quite a scally magnet, with groups of local 'kids' filling the place. It does create quite a good atmosphere though as there are a range of people and ages that go drinking there. Only downfall is that they don't play music - which is rubbish for a place to drink at weekends!!

The food took a very long time to arrive, but when staff seemed to be itching to clear our starter course plates away we assumed that the main courses must be ready to be brought out, however they were not. We waited another ten or fifteen minutes for these. I had the fish cakes to start, which were large but didn't taste of much. The main course of chicken stroganoff was the biggest disappointment. I opted for half rice, half chips, and the ratio of carbs to stroganoff was completely wrong. My dad's 'senior' portion of chicken curry was certainly no smaller than my (supposedly) full size portion of stroganoff; he just had less rice and fewer chips. This might not seem like a big issue to some, but when presented with a plateful of chips and rice, with a small amount of stroganoff on the side, it ruined the meal for me. The main course was otherwise tasty, and so I'm sure there are satisfying menu options available, but I won't be rushing back to the Antrobus Arms.
