My cat, Amelia, has been having chronic flare ups of nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. As a pet owner, nothing is more scary than seeing your baby not feeling well and being unable to pinpoint exactly what's wrong. I had taken her to another vet previously who couldn't find anything wrong after some standard blood work. They pretty much said "We don't know, could be pancreatitis maybe but not sure" and left it at that. So this weekend, I decided to try Doc-Side and brought Amelia in for an emergency visit around 12pm on Saturday. I had called in advance so they knew I was coming and allowed me to come in even though they close at 1:30pm on Saturdays. We were checked in and seated in a room immediately. The nurse came in and took down some basic info and did a quick check on Amelia. Then Dr. Tierney came in about 20-30 minutes later to perform a more in depth exam. Dr. Tierney performed the most detailed exam I've ever seen. Our other vet had barely done the type of physical checks I'd seen her perform. They then took her back for testing. The estimate for all recommended services was clearly explained to me and I didn't feel pressured into anything. I got a call on my way home that the pancreatitis test was negative. And then by Monday morning, I got a call saying her bloodwork hasn't revealed anything specific yet so we'll continue to do some tests to find out what the problem could be. That said, I have more confidence in Dr. Tierney than my other vet given the care and detail with which she approached the situation. She explained everything in depth and does her best to create a "no-fear" atmosphere for each pet. I would recommend taking notes or asking to record her as she is more of an auditory person than a note-taker. read more

I've been taking my cat here for years and have always had the best experiences. The vets and vet techs are immensely knowledgeable and caring, SO communicative, and clearly put their all into treating their little patients with the attention they deserve; and the front desk administrators are equally wonderful and diligent. My cat has recently needed two separate procedures and I received so many updates which put me at ease. They more than adequately answer every question and are always patient and thoughtful. If i call and they aren't available immediately, I always receive a response that day. The love they have for what they do is so evident. Dr. Tierney worked her butt off today to remove three more teeth than expected due to dental resorption. Huge shout outs to her, Kevin, Dr. Pat and Ellory for keeping my furry son safe and helping him regain his health, and for having the most delightful bedside manner. And they have healthcare credit companies they recommend if you're unable to immediately pay out of pocket or pet insurance won't cover a procedure. We've been bringing our cats here for 3 years and we love docside! The vets are all extremely knowledgeable and take such wonderful care of our cats. Dr Tierney is our go-to vet, and she's fantastic! She has a warm bedside manner and is so knowledgeable. You can tell that she really loves animals, and she's so great with them. One of our kitties is a bit fussy, and Dr Tierney quickly found a way to get our cat to be calm and easily take her vaccines without a fuss (via Churu treats)! Dr Tierney also takes the time to thoroughly explain what's going on and reviews all the management options in a way that makes sense. Although she's busy, she never makes us feel rush or dismissed. We actually moved to Annapolis and still bring our cats to Docside because of Dr Tierney! She also works on Saturdays, which is great! We have seen other vets in the practice as well and had nothing but positive experiences! We never ran into issues with payments (like them overcharging or anything like that). The visits are usually pretty quick (getting in and out), and they usually on time with the schedule. The online pharmacy is super easy to order from! We get a prescription cat food and supplement through the website. Parking is easy- I usually park on Broadway and pay to park. Make sure you pay! I went over by like 10 minutes and got a parking ticket! But that was my bad. Overall, we love Docside! read more

SERVICE: I come here for my baby black English Labrador Retriever named Gus. The front desk staff is very friendly, responsive (to your calls/requests) and professional. The nurses and doctors are super friendly to Gus, they seem to know what they are doing, always extremely informative, and give Gus spray cheese and peanut butter to calm him down. LOCATION: It's located at the intersection of Bank st and Broadway. I personally feel that it's a little sketchy around here so if you are walking from Fells Point, definitely walk up S Wolfe St (rather then Broadway). There are street parking if you are driving but it seems to be packed all the time. INTERIOR: Nicely decorated inside and it's kept really clean. You enter through the door to the right, check in at the front desk, then go to the back for check up/appointment, then to the left for check out. It's a pretty efficient layout inside. COST: I do feel that it's expensive.. about $60/visit and if you have shots, it can go up to $400/visit but I don't know if I am a good judge since this is my first time raising a dog. For regular appointments they are fine, however, the few times my dog has had a serious concern they don't prioritize her, won't give any guidance, and are generally unhelpful. I've been here a few times now and today was the worst. Service has been a hit or miss but today's appointment made me need to finally write my first review for this place. I called several times upon arriving for my dog's appointment with no answer although I could see through the front glass the two ladies sitting there looking at their computers and ignoring the phone ringing. I tried calling again once more (my 10th this time) while looking in the window and caught their eye so they answered and checked me in, no apology or anything when I said I had called multiple times with no answer or that I had already been waiting almost 10 min. I waited a while longer before someone came out to assist another customer before I asked her how much longer for my dog's appointment to which she told me they have a couple emergencies and she didn't know when a vet tech would be available. With no estimate how much longer I'd have to wait for while I stepped away from work for this, I had to just reschedule. She didn't apologize for my situation, appease me or anything and was very disengaged from my issue altogether. Although my last visit with Dr. Wong was pleasant, the staff here in general do not provide great service in my opinion. The front receptionist/staff people are very disengaged and unapologetic and I would not recommend them. read more

My dog seized after falling off the couch and wouldn't stop. Luckily I got her over to doc side, who patched her up in no time! They also got her weight under control by prescribing better food, and have always been pleasant to see. . I will say there is a female vet who covered for our usual vet that was hard to be around. I had to hold back tears as she listed off the numerous ailments that my 13 year old dog has. She was very cold, and prescribed allergy meds for itching while my dog had a sneeze. Upon going back to our usual vet, my dog got onto appropriate allergy meds and is now just fine. . While the substitute vet was a very negative experience, the friendly staff and our awesome usual vet earns this place an easy 5 stars :) read more

Do not recommend this place. My first visit there was April 2018 and second visit was last week. April 2018: My cat had his second episode of urinary stones. He had had his first episode in 2015, treated in California and maintained on a prescription Urinary SO diet. I was incredibly worried as I knew how dangerous this could be, stressed about costs, and scared to lose him. The doctor was very brusque, cold, and only reluctantly went with the conservative treatment. He prescribed a medication and the same prescription Urinary SO diet. I left not comfortable with them at all. A few weeks ago, I needed some evidence of my cat being prescribed that diet, so I called Docside - they could not find any records of a prescription, and said even the doctors note did not mention a prescription diet - negligent documentation. (I then called the vet in California who had prescribed the Urinary SO all the way back in 2015 - their office emailed it to me within 30 minutes) At the visit last week, I needed a 'refill' for the prescription diet that he's been on for years - no symptoms, no issues. Without my knowledge, it turns out it is Docside policy that they need to do a cystocentesis procedure ($22) and an urinalysis ($77) YEARLY just to give him the diet that has sustained him for the last 5 years. They trap pet owners whose pets need prescription diets between a rock and a hard place - either you pay $99 to do an invasive procedure on a healthy pet for a lab test that comes out normal because they are ALREADY ON THE CORRECT DIET, or you don't get a prescription for the diet and they will eventually get sick and then NEED the tests and further treatment. This is incredibly wasteful, needlessly invasive to the pets, and a money sink. I'll be looking for a more conscientious, detailed, competent, and kind veterinarian. read more

I'm so happy that Dr. Wong joined this practice! I had been taking my dogs to a vet that was closer to my home town about an hour drive away, but since they were getting older, I wanted to find a vet that was closer to home. This was probably a year ago. If I were to rate them back then, I would probably give them 3 stars. The staff and medical team were friendly, but getting prescriptions from them was kind of a pain. If you don't use their in house pharmacy, you would have to pay extra for the prescription to be sent to an outside pharmacy. I was getting ready to find another vet because I was getting frustrated with the number of tests and appointments they were recommending and the different "policies" that just seem to price gouge. Then comes Dr. Wong who seems much more realistic and understanding. He takes the time to explain what is going on with your pet and isn't pushy. He provides you with options, along with the pros and cons so that you can make an informed decision. Doc side is pricier than other vets, but I think that's because it's in the middle of the city. One of my dogs had an urgent issue that Dr. Wong was able to squeeze in a same day visit for as well. For all of our appointments, the dogs have been seen on time. Without blinking 5 stars. My Yorkie had a seizure which lasted a couple of minutes and I ran over to Doc Side. He was attended to immediately and the receptionist, vet technicians and Dr.Orrell had been so lovely and professional. It was the first time since we have our little rescue Yorkie that this happened and clearly I was very shocked and saddened to see this little guy cramping. Thanks to the Doctor and his recommendations Sparkie is now on medications which are already kicking in and he is seizure free. I highly recommend this VMC because they not only know how to treat you little Darling but also know how to take care of the owner. read more

I wish I could give a better review. I brought my puppy to Doc Side because they were highly rated and more expensive than other vets in the area, but a few of my experiences with Doc Side changed my opinion. 1) I brought my 8 week old puppy in for his first visit, just as a general check up and to get his first vaccines. It went great, and then I got home and found tapeworm segments in his stool (which you sometimes can't tell in a fecal sample, to be fair), but I also found a ton of flea dirt in his fur and he was infested with fleas. Given the advanced stage of the tapeworm already shedding segments in stool, he was clearly infested with fleas before the vet visit and they were not caught. Fleas are unfortunately such a common issue with puppies and I wish they would've been more diligent with the physical exam. 2) During a later visit in the puppy vaccine series, a vet tech asked me what vaccines my puppy was supposed to get during the drop off. This wasn't a huge issue, but it's quite alarming since the vet office is supposed to be letting me know what my puppy needs, health-wise. It further sowed seeds of doubt in my mind and made me feel uneasy about bringing my puppy there, if they couldn't confidently tell me what my puppy needed. 3) I was never informed about the Lyme vaccine for dogs. I went to a new vet, where they did a heart worm test that also screened for Lyme and it came back positive in the dead of winter when ticks are not active. He clearly caught Lyme disease from a tick bite in the fall, when he was under the care of Doc Side. Thankfully he was nonclinical, but he now has Lyme disease because I was not told a Lyme vaccine was available for dogs. Note: I do have him on revolution for flea/tick prevention, but I suppose Lyme can be transmitted in the time it takes for the revolution to kill the tick. Aside from issues with the receptionist not being able to explain the vaccine timing for puppies and getting audibly frustrated with me when I kept asking questions, the above reasons are why I cannot recommend Doc Side. Trust and confidence in your vet are the most important parts of your relationship with a vet, and because I lost that in Doc Side, I decided to switch. read more

Also just a very nice team at this office, I was very anxious about bringing them in just due to the lack of vets that would see a small mammals in this area. I can't say nothing but great things about DocSide. Everyone here is so friendly and accommodating, and they treat my puppy, Kacy so well. The girls in the front are so warm and welcome, and easy to talk to on the phone. On several occasions I've had to change my appointments, and they had no problems with me rescheduling. Kacy's primary vet is Dr. Coughlin, and he takes such good care of Kacy. He's so friendly with her and plays with her during the visit. When something is wrong with her, Dr. Coughlin always follows up with an email to make sure she is doing okay, which is really nice! It makes me feel better knowing that Kacy has a vet looking out for her! Kacy recently had surgery and Dr. Herling has been checking up on her, and I like how he is thorough and explains to me everything that is going on. I have never personally met Dr. Tierney, but have spoke to her on the phone, and she was super helpful. I love how when I'm having a concern about Kacy, any of the vets there will come talk to me on the phone, and not necessarily wait for me to come in for an appointment. Doc Side Vet is indeed more expensive than almost any other alternative around, but you do honestly pay for what you get (mostly). Dr Irvin Herling is always available, takes the time you need to answer all of your questions and often more in depth than you were looking for; a sign of someone who REALLY knows what they are doing. I'm "that dog owner" who comes in with a typed list of questions (especially before my dog's surgery) and he sat with me for a long time and made sure I was comfortable with everything and that he answered all of my questions to my satisfaction. I have also felt at times that they want to do more tests than might be necessary, but then it crossed my mind that A) I can refuse tests they suggest (they don't force you at all) B) it is possible that other places are lackadaisical on their care of your pet and C) as vets, they probably know more than I do regarding the care of my pet. I feel that while I can afford it (I don't have kids), why not ensure my pet gets the best care possible? The average cost for a visit has been around $70 (usually includes a test or flea/tick medication). Doc Side is THE premier place to have laparoscopic and other minimally invasive surgery for your pet. Dr. Herling, in addition to practicing Vet med for more than 35 years, used to work in the Department of Surgery at Sinai Hospital where he learned the laparoscopic techniques from the MDs while he was the main vet in charge of the animals (pigs) there. Dr. Herling performed a Lap Spay and a Lap Gastropexy (eliminates the risk of bloat) on my boxer and I could NOT be more happy with the results (total cost for a 50lb boxer, with no fat stores, extra anesthesia, and a bear hugger, was close to $800). read more

I cannot thank Doc Side enough for everything they have done for me and my dog since I adopted him in September 2018. They helped us get set up to register with the city and sort out all of his vaccinations immediately. He was diagnosed with a degenerative heart disease in October 2018 and has had several medical emergencies since then, including urgent medical care at Doc Side and referrals to a cardiologist and Vet ER. He has been on 5 medications since 2018 and they have helped us navigate regularly getting them filled. At every turn, Doc Side has been communicative and supportive. My dog's original vet was Dr. Martini, who was an amazing vet who truly went above and beyond to help me and my dog. After she moved, Dr. Tierney has helped us. Both of them have been incredibly kind and empathetic to me and my dog. They always explain everything going on with with him clearly and spend time answering questions. They are also sensitive to how costly the care is and have helped me make decisions about how to balance his needs and my finances. We had several end-of-life discussions that were always very holistic and kind. Every person I have ever interacted with at Doc Side, from receptionists to nurses to vets, has been helpful and truly caring towards my dog. My dog has outlived his prognosis by over 14 months, and I credit a lot of that to the amazing support I've gotten at Doc Side. Thank you again for everything you have done for us! DocSide doesn't care about you or your pet. All they care about is money. They handled our senior cat with hip dysplasia very roughly, grabbing and dropping him in ways that I would NEVER do because he's in CONSTANT pain. I mentioned MULTIPLE times that he has hip dysplasia and is in pain. They also up-sold us on more than $100 of unnecessary tests that, based on his history, they knew he didn't need. We asked over the phone how much blood tests would cost, but instead of being transparent, or even offering a range, they said "we can't estimate that because we won't know until we see him." Yet, they knew he was a senior cat, because we told them over the phone. So they could have easily said, "Senior cat blood work is around $400". And when we asked about the itemization of our bill while checking out, the receptionist was incredibly dismissive and the tech/nurse was even worse. They are jerks and don't care about patients or their people. Plus no parking and no curbside pickup service. Don't waste or your time or money at DocSide. Edited to add: the space is DIRTY! i've never been to a vet with so much pet hair all over the exam room. and someone's lunch was in the tiny fridge in the exam room. so gross! read more

From extended hours to incredibly friendly front desk staff, everything about this place is designed to make taking care of your pet easier. I have a crazy busy schedule, and it's really easy to talk to the vet or the techs via phone or email to clarify prescription orders, change appointments, or whatever else needs done. Dr. Healing and Dr. Tierney are absolutely wonderful. They are very thorough in their examination during checkups. We have two fur babies and between them have been through teeth cleaning, recovery from a stroke and an eye injury with DocSide. Each time the staff took their time in explaining the conditions, the available options, recommendation, expectations, etc. Happily, our little pups have overcome all issues with successful treatment. Having had serious issues taken care of at other vets across the country, DocSide would be the best all around that I've been to. Further the office is very efficiently run. Initially I liked the place. My dog was chewing her side, so they did a physical and administered a cytopoint shot to manage her itch/allergies. Cytopoint shot is $96 (due to her weight/size), but its a monthly shot so it adds up quickly. We also paid for the doctor's physical/examine on the first visit. I get her another cytopoint shot the next month with a nurse - $96 is expensive, but atleeast I don't have to pay additional fees (maybe just a small nurse fee). A month later, im due for a couple of vaccinations. They tell me I need to pay for another doctor's appointment. I try to explain my dog was seen by the doctor 3 or 4 months ago. Apparently that's the policy...so im frustrated and decide to try another vet where I take her for her shots and another cytopoint shot. The only downside of the new place is that they are a little far from my house. Another 2 months go by and my dog needs her cytopoint so I called Docside for just the cytopoint shot. they tell me its been a "while" since she was seen by the doctor so she needs another doctor's appointment. It's been 6 months! she puts me on hold to ask again and comes back and says that she's due for her bi-yearly exam. Bi yearly?! what? People don't have bi yearly examines, why would my dog have bi yearly exams? The staff, nurses, doctors are friendly but the policies don't make sense...it really feels like im being taken advantage of. There's no reason for my dog to be examined by a doctor, but they are insisting on the exam...and my dog needs this dang cytopoint shot every 1-2 months. So frustrating. read more

I called last minute having never been there before but my dog was in so much pain and they were able to see me SAME DAY when my vet said a few days. They were the only place in fells and canton that could see me same day. They are wonderful. They took such good care of my 12 year old boxer Titus. Just a few hours after our appointment he was eating and going to the bathroom (I know TMI but he wasn't before appt) and then promptly fell asleep cue the cutest snoring you have ever heard. I can already tell he is feeling SO MUCH BETTER. They are line priced to what you would pay at other vets offices and in my opinion the service was five stars if not more. Dr Herling is the nicest man and took time to explain everything to me. Very direct about what he needed today no BS and then laid out a plan for the future. Highly recommend! Very annoying vet. I took my 6 week old puppies here to get caught up on their shots and they did an amazing job. They loved on them and made them few comfortable. My dogs are Cane Corso mastiffs and their breed usually has cropped ears. So I went to an Annapolis vet who's amazing at what she does to get their ears lasered off, then came back to this vet to finish up their puppy shots and the vet was very annoying about their ears. Plus the rooms here are SUPER tiny I will never bring my dogs back. read more

Havent met anyone yet that hasn't seemed to just love my little one. Its in the city, so as most places in the city, parking is a bit rough, but they do have a few spots out front for drop off and pick up if you're pet had to stay overnight for a procedure. If I could I would give them more stars! I adopted a dog from the shelter who woke up one day with what I thought was a bowel obstruction. It turns out that she had pneumonia and got very sick very quickly. The staff there was utterly amazing! Two days in a row we had to come in multiple times. Dr. Tierney was hands down the best vet I have ever had. She continued to check on my dog throughout the weekend even though she wasn't in the office and was super comforting to me when I started crying. Dr. Klimentitis was also amazing, and the techs/front desk staff were so kind. It was a really distressing few days but I also knew that we were in good hands. They all took exceptional care of my pet, and Dr. Tierney went above and beyond. I am coming from California where everything is expensive so I have little comparison for the Baltimore area but I thought that the prices were fair. The level of care and attention we received was worth whatever cost! I am telling all my friends they should take their pets to DocSide! read more

A friend recommended Doc Side vets when my dog started limping. I had been to other vets but didn't really feel comfortable. I'm so glad that I followed her advice. Sadly, my dog was diagnosed with bone cancer. Dr. Klimentidis was so kind in breaking the news to me. She talked with me on the phone for hours from her home over the weekend after diagnosis. With all the decisions I had to make, she assured me that she would help me with any decision I chose to make, and that she would not let me make a bad decision. It was such a relief to know that whatever I chose to do, she would help. In the next week, Dr. Klimentidis arranged surgery for my dog at a time that was convenient to my schedule. She consulted with other doctors nationwide to be sure that her diagnosis and treatment were the best. I chose not to do chemo (the data doesn't really support it) and even though most dogs only live about 6 months after diagnosis, he is alive and kicking 8 months after. He pulls me around the neighborhood and even into Doc Side medical center. He loves everyone there and has no bad memories or nervousness about going to the docs. I'm very happy with the experience I had at Doc-Side. I took my cat, who is friendly but skittish and very shy, he hadn't been outside the house in at least 3 years and had lived in a shelter for 4 before that so you can imagine how he felt about being tricked into a carrying case and brought to a strange room. Despite this, Dr. Tierney and her assistant were very understanding and accommodating, they never manhandled the poor kitty and tried hard to keep him as calm as possible. They were very professional and got his vitals and gave him his shots even though he didn't make it easy for them. They answered all my questions and concerns and were very personable; I never felt like I was being talked down to or that they were being dismissive. When it came time to move the little one, and he made it clear he wasn't going quietly, Dr. Tierney was once again very accommodating and got us some sedatives and gave us all the information we needed to make the move as un-traumatic and it worked! He's happy in his new home and the move and drive down were pretty painless. DOC-Side is a great facility and one I highly reccommend. read more

My pets have been patients of Doc-Side for over 10 years and during that time the staff and vets have been wonderful. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, professional and care about your pet. It all starts with the person who answers the phone...they are there to assist with appointments, provide guidance, and/or a few kind words of comfort to help you through your emergency. Doc-Side is able to take care of almost any medical procedure your pet may need...I know because one of my pet has a medical file about two inches thick. The vets enjoy what they do and it shows in the loving way they have treated my pets. Drs. Herling and Tierney are always available to discuss and/or get further clarification on your pet's treatment/procedure. They stay current on medical procedures, medications, and other medical resources which has been invaluable in the treatment of my pets. My pets are my children so the cost of medical care has not been an issue for me. I think Doc-Side is reasonable for the level of service provided by the staff and vets. Because Doc-Side is in the city...parking may be challenging but they do have two parking spots in front of the building which are often available. read more

We took our pitbull-mix here for her yearly exam and vaccines, as we were looking for a vet closer to our Canton home. The space is small and cramped, and the staff didn't make me or my dog feel welcome. In fact, Dr. Herling made an ignorant comment about our dog, based on her appearance. Owning a "bully breed" type dog, my boyfriend and I have seen others make stereotypical comments, and this place is no different. We've been back to our old vet since, and even though they are a good 40 minutes away, the staff/vets are much friendlier and accommodating and create a much better experience than Doc-Side. I really, really love the attention and care they give to my dog. They take into account that he is reactive and ensure that he is not stressed out. He is never stressed to come here and Dr. Herling has a natural way with animals. BUT they are soooo expensive. I am going to keep coming here in an emergency but for my dog's surgery, I will be going elsewhere. The quote from Doc Side was about $350 more than anyplace else with comparable experience and good reviews. I do not like that I feel pressured to spend at least $150 more per visit than I intend at Doc Side. They definitely play on the guilt and emotion of pet owners. Having said all that, it is up to the individual if they go forward with treatment. I do still recommend for anyone who might have a difficult or fearful pet. read more

I had to put my young cat down. I had just moved to the city when he started to get sick and didn't have a vet yet. DocSide went above and beyond my expectations. In hindsight, I am incredibly grateful that I chose to go to them initially. Every single staff member was thoughtful and sympathetic. It gave me comfort knowing that we had collectively done our best to treat and help him. They made me feel supported in a new city while saying goodbye to my beloved pet. I would trust them again with my own pet and recommend them to anyone in the area. read more

I have been taking our pets to Docside since they opened and have always been very happy. Yesterday I brought my 5 year old dog in on an emergent basis. Dr Herling seemed to think my girl was suffering with Addison's disease. Later tests proved that he was correct. After doing some research on my own I see how often dogs that have Addison's are misdiagnosed as it is rare. I am certain the knowledge and experience that Drs. Herling and Tierney possess saved my girl's life. Forever grateful. read more
