For Christmas this year, Santa brought our tween and teen mostly cash under the tree, as they are…read moreat that age when shopping for themselves is a gift in and of itself. Santa also brought our Buffalo-based fam' a road trip to Bridgeport WV for no better reason than to go someplace together that we had not been. Meadowbrook Mall was close to our Bridgeport hotel, and we spent some time here a couple of days on our trip for the kids to elimnate some of that Christmas dough that was burning a hole in their respective wallets. Compared to most of our malls at home in WNY, Meadowbrook Mall is actually boomin'! Yes, it is a mall, and malls are dwindling in general, so Meadowbrook does have its fair share of empty storefronts. But there is still a good amount of shopping still available here. And much of it is chain stores, as compared to our malls at home that are a lot of consignment second-hand shopping. Don't get me wrong, I love thrifting and treasure hunting at our malls, but it was nice for a change to see a Hot Topic, a Spencer's, a Bath and Body Works, a Victoria's Secret, and several other good ole' mall staples still hanging on here in Meadowbrook Mall. Target, Old Navy, and Marshall's are a few of the larger anchor stores still holding down the mall here too. There is also a nice chain bookstore, Books-a-Million. Our tween son also had a blast in the VR game place, Planet X I think? He played a VR boxing game for a half hour, and game out all sweaty and pumped! The food court was a real surprise for us. Sadly our WNY mall food courts are mostly a dead done deal, fairly barren in our malls. But the food court at Meadowbrook had something like eight or ten places to choose from, plus Great American Cookies and Bubble World on the fringes of the food court for sweet treats. We had dinner in the food court one night, something we haven't done in a long time. Overall our tween and teen were pleased with their shopping spreed at Meadowbrook Mall. They both came out with a variety of clothing and other items, all purchased at sale or clearance deal prices. If you don't think Meadowbrook Mall is all that great, perhaps you aren't aware of what malls are like in other parts of the country. You have a real gem of a clean, nice mid-sized mall that is still hanging on with a decent variety of shopping, entertainment, and eateries. Kudos to you, Meadowbrook Mall!

As of late 2022, current stores include JCPenney, Target, the Shoe Dept., GNC, Hallmark, Old Navy, Buckle, Ulta, rue 21, Torrid, Kay Jewelers, Journeys, Bath and Body Works, Claire's, Zales, Lids, Marshall's, Finish Line, Candy Unlimited, American Eagle, Maurice's, Spencer's, Hot Topic, fye, GameStop, Showtime Music, Books a Million, Joann, etcetera. Current restaurants include Chick-fil-A, Auntie Anne's, Charley's Philly Steaks, Eastern Wok, etcetera. Options for entertainment include a Cinemark movie theater, an arcade, etcetera. I thought that most of the clothing stores were for teenagers rather than for my age group. I ended up buying only socks in one store, so I did not do my best shopping here.

We recently road-tripped our way from Buffalo NY down to WV for no better reason than to visit a…read morenew place together. We stayed in Bridgeport WV, about a half hour from Weston WV, where Appalachian Oddities is located. Weston WV has many paranormal ties, including a huge historical asylum that dovetails with civil war history, too. So a mystic shop like Appalachian Oddities fits right in here in Weston. When we first walked in, we actually weren't sure if it was a shop or a museum, as the entry vestibule is staged so well as an undead parlor, haha. But we were soon warmly greeted by the shop owner, and welcomed inside to take a look around. Appalachian Oddities is inside a repurposed house that still has much of the original footprint and charm. So each area of the store is in a different room of the house, with lots of peculiar gifts to explore in each space. I ended up purchasing a couple gifts here, one a prayer-style candle for my horror-movie-loving brother that had a Freddy Krueger design on it. I also purchased a necklace for my daughter that had a lovely etched wood raven pendant. Our twelve-year old son went to town here with his Christmas money, and bought a board game called "Pandemic", and a local artist print of a painting of the Joker, Jauqiun Phoenix's rendition. As it turns out, the asylum in Weston is a short-listed film location for the next Joker movie. In addition to the shop, Appalachian Oddities has an escape room attraction. We did not participate in the escape room when we were there, but did see a family going in, and could overhear the screams, scares, and fun coming out of the escape room. I overheard the cost was $25 per person, and the people going through seemed to be having a great time well worth the cost. My husband spent some time chatting with the very friendly owner, who also runs a paranormal enthusiast group out of their meeting space in the back of the store. The group ghost hunts together in the area, and have had some intriguing close encounters! If you live in this area and are interested in paranormal sightings, definitely check out this group. If you are visiting Weston WV for the asylum tour or any of the other area attractions related to the mysterious unknown, (i.e., ghosts, aliens, cryptids, etc.), Appalachian Oddities is a great gift shop stop! Even if ghouls aren't your thing, it is still fun to stop in for a peek at the paranormal.

The Cellar is located in the basement of a carpeting store, so that's a little odd, but this place isn't about big-city marketing... it's about a man who loves his hobby and wants to share it with anyone who may be interested. They also have a good selection of acoustic guitars. There were also other instruments such as mandolins, resonators, banjos, and percussion. Music Center has some really nice amps, including Marshall, Mesa Engineering, Blackstar, Vox, and Laney. As expected, they have all kinds accessories, as well as some that you may not expect, such as vacuum tubes. The staff at Music Center is very friendly, and while they are helpful and show you features, they don't try to aggressively hard sell you. When I am evaluating a guitar or amp, it is a process that takes a long time and a lot of concentration, so I appreciate this. I am also very surprised by the prices at Guitar Center. Their prices are about the same as online shops, such as Musician's Friend, Guitar Center, and Sweetwater, and they will usually come down a little, to do better than buying on the internet. While you may be able to wait for a coupon, or talk the online guys down a little lower, I would rather support a local business than send my money to some giant, faceless corporation. I also like to try out instruments before I buy them. Sure, it may be nice to try something out in the store and order it off the internet, if you can get a better price. Especially with instruments, though, no two are alike. The way the wood resonates, the way the nut is cut, and most importantly the fretwork can vary greatly from instrument to instrument. Plus, I really don't want to have to drive to Pittsburgh, DC, or Columbus to try out music gear if all of the local brick and mortar stores get run out of business
