I have taken numerous garments to Mr. Song for tailoring. He is the master!! He is much more affordable than the tailor at Columbia mall, and much more skilled in my opinion. Since going to Dobbin Tailor, I have taken 5 suit jackets, 10 pairs of pants, and a sweater to this guy. All have come out perfect! One thing I have been having him do is taper my pant legs. He does an amazing job on them. My friend has been using him for shortening his suit jackets, a particularly complex operation, which has always resulted with impeccable results. The guy really can do anything. The only reason anyone would have a problem with his services is because he can't do the impossible. He will tell you if something isn't feasible. A friend directed me here when I needed a dress altered for a wedding, and I have been coming back for anything and everything since then. Both my friend and I have had similar experiences here: Clothes will fit oddly, so we will take them here, put them on, and say something to the effect of "I think it needs to be taken in here." He will look at us and say something to the effect of "It is too long/big [somewhere else entirely]." Then, when he pins the material and we see the difference it is an "Oooh" moment. I have been continuously impressed by his knowledge and skill. No job is too small for him either; I have brought countless pants/shirts to him for mending. I will not go back here because I believe the tailor is a bigot. That is the only reason that I can think that would cause the owner to treat me so poorly. I chose the establishment because he was highly rated for his abilities. Therefore I brought various high end items to be tailored because I wanted them done well. The owner/tailor tried to make me pay before he did the work. Before I could, a woman who I believe was his wife argued with him a bit in their language. Then she told me that I should pay when I come to pick up the items. I offered to leave a deposit but she insisted that, no, I should pay when I pick up the items. I appreciated her for that. The work that was done was fine. However I am not inclined to go back due to the scenario described above. I will spend my money where I am treated with respect. read more

Came here because I had to get a dress altered for a wedding I was in. He was great, had me try on the dress and then decided where exactly he needed to make the changes. He had the dress ready in less than a week and the work was seamless! I could not even tell the dress had been altered (it was a complicated dress). Dobbin Custom Tailor can alter your clothes to fit you perfectly. I've been here several times to have a dress hemmed and some waistlines take in. All the work was completed beautifully and within a week (they may be able to turn around faster, but I didn't need the clothes immediately so I haven't tested this). The downside, as others have mentioned, is the cost, but for elegant clothes it can be worth it. I really appreciate how the owner is honest with customers about what is worth their money. I once asked him to shorten some straps on a dress; he showed me that the dress was meant to be worn slightly differently and voila, the straps looked much better. It was basically a "free" alteration when he could have done what I'd asked for and charged me for it. Another time I heard him discussing a dress with another customer. He explained to her what he could do, the limitations the details of the dress imposed, and honestly advised her that she might not be happy with the outcome. She was able to use this feedback to walk away and not ruin her dress at a high cost. The owner of the shop is always moving around helping the customer, but it never feels like he is trying to rush anyone out and devotes his full attention to the matter at hand. read more

This is the place to go in Howard County for alterations. The other reviews are accurate so I won't repeat. This gentleman is fast and flawless. Similar to other reviewers, I also found the prices to be expensive (deduct one star), but sometimes you just have to pay for quality. In some cases, the alterations cost more than the item itself (I'm a REALLY good shopper) but it was worth it. My items now fit my body as if they were made specifically for me, and you really can't put a price on that. read more

I recently had a few dresses altered here. He was very friendly and honest about what he could fix and what he didn't think would look good. The prices seem a little steep, one dress being taken in cost $40, another $60, and one hem was $20. But as they say, you can't have good, fast and cheap. Overall, the work was flawless and I defintely got what I paid for. I'm very happy and will bring more pieces in for altering. Smaller jobs, like hems will probably end up at the dry cleaner, but pieces I really care about will go here. read more

I have never been to a tailor before, but I am very happy with my experience here. I had a zipper head replaced on my winter coat, I got a skirt taken in, and I got a loose thread on my Lululemon pants fixed. I was nervous handing over my favorite things to a stranger, but Mr. Song knows what he is doing. I got my pants fixed for free, he did it right infront of me. All they needed was a loose thread pulled back into place. The zipper head was $15. The skirt take in, one side only, was $25. He said if I had it taken in from both sides it would be more expensive. I was fine with just 1 side. It fits now, so that is all that counts. I saw some of the other prices for bridesmaid gown alterations (all the alterations are hanging in the store, with the receipts stapled to the front); the totals made me very nervous, as most were over $100. However, I don't know what was actually done to those garments, but I can see why other reviews have said he is expensive. I am comfortable paying extra, knowing my things will return to me in the same condition they went in, minus what repair I needed. I will return here and recommend it to others. read more

I went here twice with new suits that were a half size to one full size too big in some areas. The owner laughed at me--quite literally--and said he couldn't do it. So I wasted two full trips here to get laughed at--and the problem was not solved. Um. Okay... Well the Custom Tailor at the Columbia Mall could do it, no attitude included. The prices here are absolutely ridiculous. I took a bridesmaids dress in that was too big and also needed a small second strap removed. He wanted to charge $95 just for the hem and small strap! When I told him that was too much, he kept my dress behind the counter and tried to haggle to 90 then 85. I kept saying no, I will go elsewhere and he finally gave my dress back. I drove back to my hometown (about 45 min) and had it taken in, hemmed, and had the strap removed for $55. More work for a fraction of the price! I also felt like he was lazy and didn't feel like taking it in even though the top was hanging off my chest, but I would have been even more displeased if he added that cost in! read more

I have been looking for a good tailor in the baltimore area for several years now, and was looking forward to coming here, based on the mostly positive reviews. Previously I lived in Manhattan for many years, and had an amazing tailor there who altered many of my suits. So at this point, i know exactly how i would like a suit jacket to fit me. Unfortunately Mr Song did not agree with me. I do like my suits very slim, but Mr Song seemed very displeased with this. He kept stating that it was 'too tight', and he frequently was shaking his head in response to how I would like the suit jacket to be altered. I told him that if he was not willing to alter the jacket in the way that I wanted, he should be clear with me, as I would just take it elsewhere - but he did not respond to that. Mr Song should be catering to the customer's needs, not his own. Granted, he has decades of tailoring experience (according to his website), however, I do not expect a man who is in his 50s/60s to always be attuned to fashion needs of the young. Furthermore, i felt the quoted price of the work was outrageous ($170), and was way more expensive than any suit jacket alteration I have done in NYC (and some of those alterations required more work than what i was asking of Mr Song). read more

I took a suit into Mr. Song as I had lost a lot of weight. He was very professional, and his shop was clean and comfortable. He told me what was too expensive to do, and what would help.....including things I would not have thought of. Bottom line, I followed his suggestions and expertise, and I now have a suit I can wear again. I would definitely go back again. He may be good with men's clothing and tailoring of regular items, but I took my wedding dress simply to have a bustle put on it and was so very disappointed. Instead of bustling it unobtrusively with something like buttons, ribbon, etc., he used a one inch silver metal hook! It's functional yes, but extremely ugly. To his credit, he did give me a full refund when I asked for it. Lesson learned - he may be great for some things but I would highly caution against taking a wedding dress to him. read more

I finally went to a tailor after waiting and waiting. I chose Dobbin Custom Tailor for it's proximity as well as other good reviews. The man who owns the store is very nice and does great work with all types of clothes. I got pants shortened, the arms of a blazer shortened, and a very nice black dress fitted. I am by no means an expert in tailoring, but I've used this location twice and have not been impressed. I have had some men's shirts slimmed (darting) or shortened. Prices are at least 20% higher than they should be and the quality is not great. I found that the stitches were left loose and darts down the left and right of the back of my shirt were uneven. I will be looking elsewhere in the future. The only pro is that the shop is clean and neat and they are friendly. read more

I have had three things altered by Dobbin Custom. In each case, while the turn around was not the speediest, he did deliver the items I NEEDED by the agreed date. In one case, he hemmed an evening gown that was very full and pleated ($175.00), in another, he shortened a day dress (no pleating/fullness) for $55.00 and took up the shoulders on another evening dress ($120.00). The workmanship is excellent - the prices are ridiculous. I had to pay in full up front for each one. That is a lot of money when the results may be questionable (Mr. Song warned me that he couldn't stitch the hem on the evening gown exactly as the original but what he did was fine) After reading other reviews and overhearing customers, it doesn't seem like he has a consistent pricing policy across customers. I am a performer who is rebuilding her working concert wardrobe. I will probably continue to take my professional dresses (mostly complicated evening wear) to Dobbin Custom Tailor as the initial cost of the garments warrant quality alteration. I will not go there again for routine hemming or repairs. read more

Fantastic work done here for reasonable prices. I chose a very simple dress for my wedding that needed a very simple job of taking the hem up by a couple of inches. The tailor I took it to before immediately tripled his price as soon as he heard the word wedding, I was in tears it was so far off my budget. I came here a few times. I think the price to hem jeans is reasonable ($14) but anything beyond that involving actual tailoring is ridiculously overpriced. I had jeans tailored too (taken in 1 inch) and it was $25+. Another example, $30 to hem a simple jersey dress by a few inches - that's like 75% of the cost of the dress!! I wish the owner had prices listed somewhere, I almost felt like he was pulling them out of thin air. I found him a bit rude. Probably won't come here again unless I have expensive pieces that need tailoring. For casual pieces I just don't find it worth it. read more

First time ever that yelp has steered me wrong. I had some very expensive clothes I needed altering due to losing weight. I took in 12 things, I wish I could upload pictures. When I picked up the first batch of stuff, a pair of pants was left unstitched on one side of the waistband and on a second garment, the hem was stitched curved not straight. The quality was so disturbing I asked to pick up the second batch of stuff before it was worked on, so I did not need to take the risk of bad workmanship on those items. In my view, this place is no better than a dry cleaners - the work was very disappointing. He refunded my money, and when I showed him the pants left unstitched he claimed he did not see that it needed sewing both sides. I ask you, is a place with this lack of attention to detail where you want to trust your important items? I did my homework on yelp because I wanted better than a dry cleaners - not the same/worse. It's easy to get pants hemmed cheaply elsewhere and closer to home. But here, the owner understands when I want to do "sentimental" work, such as altering one of my late dad's collared shirts as best as possible to fit me, a woman. Another tailor said no, because the end result would still be slightly off due to the collar being too big. Needed a suit tailored, so i figured i'd give this place a chance. Not the best decision I've made. The tailor measured me, took my suit, then insisted I pay immediately (although this is usually done at pick up at every other tailor ive gone to, ever). Total came to $70, which was steep for all that was done (hem, taking in waist, lowering collar), but at this point I figured oh well. Went to pay, and my card was "declined". The owner said I could just pay when I pick up. This had never happened before, so I went to my car and called the bank. They said the charge had actually gone through and the money was withdrawn from my account. They also suggested I be careful and dispute the charge. Checking my mobile banking app I confirmed this. I went back in to show the owner and he insisted my card was declined, and that I pay when I pick up. I said I would, but I would also not hesitate to dispute any charges if needed. Magically, a couple days later, the charge was cancelled. When I went to pick up the suit, I paid in cash because I didn't want to deal with the owner again. Once I got the suit home, I tried it on, and the pants are still about 1-2 cm too long (they fit fine during the fitting process). Now I need to go somewhere else to fix this. Very disappointed. I gave the guy a chance, but I will be looking elsewhere for my future tailoring needs. read more
