I've been here a handful of times now and it's so fun! As a not so good at arts person, it was easy to create some cute pieces here! My friend reserved a table for a group of us, which gives you a time slot to work on your craft. When you are done, they fire it for you, then contact you when it is ready to be picked up. They have such a wide variety of pottery pieces to choose from as well as many paint options and tools. Each paint option was labeled with a number and had a tile showing how the color would end up looking after the firing process, because the wet paint itself is a lighter/different color. Every employee I encountered was a delight, and so helpful. They walked you through the process and helped me with any paint questions I had. I also discovered they have stencils and things like that! There's a big parking lot in the back, or a few spots out front, easy for pick ups. Great experience for any type of outing, and it is family friendly. It's not the biggest space, so I do recommend booking a table. All of the pieces are labeled with a price that comes off in the kiln, and there's a wide range of price ranges for any budget. Some really cute items to choose from. We hosted my daughter's birthday today at DIY Crafts today. It was truly THE BEST! I wish I could remember our host's name because she was absolutely amazing!! I attended a Glass Fusion Class with the fabulous ladies of Birmingham Girls Club recently and had an excellent experience. The instructor, Julia McNair, was such a rock star! She taught the basics of glass cutting and fusing with such a friendly and humorous disposition. She explained the project in a simple but informative manner that helped all 23+ women successfully complete a variety of colorful glass pieces in the 2 hour class. Talk about the perfect place to go for a meaningful, handmade gift! This store offers you the chance to make personalized ornaments, serving plates, figurines, tea pots, coasters and a heck of a lot more. If you have kids, you can get handprint or footprint ornaments made. They even make paw print ornaments, so bring those furry kids, too. All you do is come in and decide on what you'd like to make. (This might be the hardest part.) They have examples all around the store to give you ideas and boost those creative juices. Don't worry if you're no Picasso, they have plenty of fail-proof techniques like stenciling, overlays, and lace printing that are super-simple and super-impressive. After you're finished, they keep your masterpiece to glaze and fire it and then they'll text you when it's ready to pick up. We went by on a Monday evening and made plates. I made a cookie plate for Santa and he made a "special plate" for birthdays. The instructors made everything so easy. They helped me pick out paint colors, showed me which brushes would worked best, and really put me at ease with trying something new. What a great memory! read more

As usual, Will has introduced us to yet another business I probably would have never sought out myself! It was just 4 of us this time (supposed to be 6), so this CMYE was pretty 1-on-1 style. The owner had 1 person staffed to help out, which insured there was a funny and chill environment while we all kicked off our own plate projects. I liked getting started with something easy, but could definitely see myself stepping up the difficulty on a return trip with the lady friend. I felt very comfortable here and would recommend a visit as a possible date night...you gotta be creative! I went here for a Yelp event, and I had no idea what to expect. I am not in the least bit 'crafty,' but I was willing to give it a shot. As soon as we arrived, I was struck by all of the beautiful platters and figurines that lined the walls. My first thought was 'Mine is going to look like I was blindfolded compared to these.' Then they explained to me some of the ways they got designs on the plates, and how it could be really easy. I decided to go with the stencil method and chose Vulcan as my subject. No one mentioned to me that I would have to use my finger to fill paint into the stencil, so don't say I didn't warn you. Anyway, it wasn't too bad, and my plate turned out to look pretty cool. I haven't seen the finished product with glaze yet, but I'm sure it's going to rock. I found the people there to be exceedingly helpful and sympathetic to my less than developed artistic skills. I would highly recommend going and making anything from an ornament to a huge serving platter. read more

I first heard about DIYC when my son attended a YMCA summer art camp that visited DIYC for pottery. He fell in love and RAVED about the place, the project, and the "super nice people" (his words as a little kid). We still display those pottery pieces in our home and he is very proud of them. Since then I've attended girls' nights for canvas painting (where the owner, Julia, really makes EVERYONE feel like a real artist), Christmas ornament painting, and glass fusing (probably my favorite craft class I've ever taken - and there have been a LOT over the years). This is a place where everyone feels talented when they leave with their gorgeous new art. I loved the glass fusing class so much that I talked to the owner about guiding a group of 10 Cub Scouts, aged 9, through the class to earn one of their arts & crafts achievements and she took those boys and held their attention for an hour to complete some really wonderful works of art that they were SO PROUD OF and they had a lot of fun doing it! The environment is safe for kids even working with cut glass. Great shop. Great selection. Great prices. Wonderful staff. Caring owner. I only wish it was closer to my house so I could visit even more! read more
