The one that reads "only New Orleans is real, the rest is done with mirrors" is one of my personal favorites, so of course I own it myself and have sent it to just about everyone. Defend New Orleans. A great shop to find those eclectic gifts that are unique and not cookie cutter whatsoever. You'll find a piece of New Orleans you can gift to someone visiting or a fellow local who wants to represent the 504. From lapel pins to unique shirts and socks. This shop really does carry a bit of everything, including boxed water. I really like both of their store locations but this one seems to have a bit more room. One of my favorite shops in one of my favorite cities, DNO (Defend New Orleans) is a wonderful store in a cute house right on the corner of First and Magazine streets in the Garden District. It makes me happy every time I walk into this delightful place because the people are always friendly, helpful, nice and make you feel welcome. I also love the fact that whenever I have asked for something, they go out of their way to get it for me - either by ordering it from the other store (also amazing), or shipping it to me as soon as they can. The store features beautiful locally-sourced clothing, artwork, books, gifts and other treasures that make shopping here a special experience. The location of both stores are great, this one is right on Magazine Street and can be incorporated into a wonderful afternoon walk-and-shop (and eat/drink) outing. I also very much like the DNO brand and their sense of social responsibility and love of the environment. Their website is first rate and well-designed and offers an enjoyable online experience. I have always been a huge fan of DNO and what they do. Their shop is New Orleans focused and their products largely come from local folks. They have a large variety of T-shirts, art, and other gift items that represent NOLA. Their t-shirts are high quality and iconic with simple yet fashionable designs. I love perusing their selection of books and zines that they keep on stock and the other small items from local artists (earrings, postcards, etc.). This is a staple shop in New Orleans. I dig this hip little store on Magazine. I noticed their tshirts and stickers before I even knew who or what they meant. Reminiscent to that of Shepard Fairey and his own Obey symbol. I like that. One of a kind items. I've picked up groovy tees for friends, stickers to trade across the globe, postcards with witty sayings stuck around my abode and a super cool Brent Pafford ceramic pitcher. It's not a big box glossy store, so you'll have to seek it out. It can be easy to miss. I've got it down now, but the first time I drove around it a few times. Go. Seek. DNO is the best. Whenever I need a gift, I always check out DNO. They have a great selection of New Orleans gear and art from local artists in the area. They also work with many organizations in the area to benefit different initiatives. The t-shirts are good quality, and I have one that I wear ALL the time that hasn't faded. The designs are "hip" and match the culture of the city. Personally, I love their crop top line, but have ordered everything from men's t-shirts to art to beanies. They also include free little stickers with your order! Not sure if you can shop in-store amid COVID, but you can get the job done through their website. I love this little store! Well, I have been buying from them for some time now. I like their products. Part souvenir, part print media. The staff is helpful and will get you what you need. There is also a little sale bin, you might miss it if you blink. It's worth putting your paws on and see if the design on sale is talking to you. This reminds me of the stores in Portland, OR. This is the type of t-shirt shop that all t-shirt shops should want to be when they grow up. It's in a house on the corner of First and Magazine, and if my Lyft driver hadn't dropped me off at the front door, I may have missed it completely. Look for the subtle DNO sign. Once inside, I was greeted right away, and then left alone until I asked for assistance. The shopkeeper woman was very hands-off, but helpful once I spoke to her. There's a very hipster, holier-than-thou vibe going on here, but I didn't find it to be inaccessible. Ladies apparel is on the left side of the store, and mens to the right. One of each type of shirt is displayed on the hangers, and you ask at the front counter to see it in your size. This adds an extra step to the process, but it allows the shop to have more of a minimalist appearance, which I really dig. In the center of the room and in the upstairs area, there are a bunch of books, art prints, and gifts, all relating to New Orleans. Also in the upstairs area is a rack of vintage NOLA and Mardi Gras shirts, likely scrounged from goodwill stores. They were all just as soft as the new shirts up front, so I would imagine they were washed in a vintage rinse like you see on Pinterest. When I was ready to make my purchase, I showed the woman at the counter the design I wanted and she brought one out in my requested size. I'm almost always a medium, but I had to go up to a women's XL for a decent fit, and it's still a bit snug in the midsection. Not great for the self-esteem. Two shirts plus tax came to $55 even. About average for nice shirts in New Orleans. I'll absolutely be making another trip the next time I'm in town, and this would definitely be the first stop I'd make to buy gifts if I were local. read more

My favorite NOLA gift shop from my trip! I could see this being a place that even locals shop at for something unique! This charming gift shop offers unique vintage-themed, and punk inspired New Orleans items. With a hipster vibe, this shop offered t-shirts, sweatshirts, candles, print art, and books, all seemingly locally produced. I found two t-shirts during my stop in that don't look the least bit tacky or touristy, that still communicate that I love this city! Great find! read more

New Orleans is chock-full of t-shirt shops, and boy, do I love a good tee. I really can't believe this was my first time in Defend New Orleans. Comparing them to other t-shirt shops is apples to oranges. If you like more toned down styles to rep your city, mostly mono-colored prints or wording, DNO is going to be your jam. It's a really clean store with everything displayed nicely, and if they don't have your size on the shirt rack, they may have it in the back. I also like that they have different styles of shirts for their different prints. They have a great sticker set, if you like to stick local-centric stickers on your car, computer, fish tank...They also have these incredibly cute lapel pins that I may start incorporating into my wardrobe 'cause they are so damn cute. They also have an array of local books, vintage records, and vintage tees (some of which I think are priced high, buuut if you really want it, then you really want it!) as well as locally-printed tees, hats and ware that I really enjoyed. I think their pricing overall is really swell, and I could've bought the whole store on this last visit. This is a wonderful place to buy gifts for friends, and maybe a few for yourself. Don't blink while walking down Magazine, or you're likely to miss one of the most interesting yet relevant to my tastes stores I discovered on my trip. While Defend New Orleans doesn't have a large amount of merchandise, what they have is pretty great. Part t shirt shop, part boutique and part vintage store, it's all awesome. The store has a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Granted the store has a small footprint, but I suspect many retailers would try and cram in like 4x the merchandise. I think having less made it easier to browse and notice the unique details of the wares they did have for sale. The vintage section is small, but the quality is high! I found two suits that I would have loved, if only they were in my size (damn my monkey arms!) I would have snatched them up for a beyond reasonable price. While all I walked out with was a tshirt (mind you, a frickin awesome tshirt) I was impressed with their other apparel, accessories and etc (candles, books, that type of thing.) I don't know that I'd go out of my way to return, but if on my next visit to New Orleans I find myself walking by, I'd absolutely pop in. read more

Ultra hipster boutique that has nailed it in terms of merchandise (a few used books, a few cool vintage finds, about half a dozen t shirts), look (a bombed out brownstone renovated with lots of sanded surfaces), and attitude (the sales people are vaguely nacroleptic). All in all, I loved it. They didnt have anything to buy, but I dont think this was the point. This is a boutique that is curating a hipster point of view and obviously building a brand. The best local clothing shop in New Orleans, period. Whoever came up with this clothing line should be famous...wait, I take that back. Defend New Orleans is one of the best kept secrets in clothing. Beside the usual shirts and sweatshirts with the great DNO logo, they also have pins, patches, flags, note books, underwear, and much more. The shop is just as unique as the clothing line. The store has no address, and its basically just a small room on the corner of Magazine & 1st, which at one time was probably the living room of a house. Defend New Orleans is a fantastic local organization. They not only sell wonderfully designed merchandise, but also donate about 20% of their profits to local arts/culture organizations in the city. I ordered a tote and lighter - the lighter was out of stock but they shipped my order right away, wrote a handwritten card explaining the delay, and included some rad stickers. Nice things in the shop. I wanted to buy a shirt, but had trouble figuring out how they had men's, women's sizes and styles categorized. I asked the girl working there for help. She just verbally explained how shirts were categorized and stood there while I tried to find the style I asked her about. The store wasn't busy (we were the only two people in there) and she took no initiative to assist me. I gave up on finding my shirt. The girl must be sucking someone's d*#k, because she sure doesn't have the job for her salesmanship skills! read more
