In April of this year I took my van into DN Auto Corp. for an oil change and routine maintenance. Along with an oil change and inspection, my van needed a lube job. I was told they didn't have full synthetic oil, so I brought my own. This is quite unusual but I didn't think anything of it at the time. However, with many cars on the road requiring full synthetic oil, I wonder what kind of mechanic would have no bulk synthetic oil on hand. When I saw my bill, I found I was charged $7.00 for "hazardous materials" and $7.00 for "Shop supplies." When I complained, one of the owners told me that the first charge was to dispose of the 4 litres of used oil and the second was for things like shop towels and grease. I asked if they had done the lube job on my van and apparently they hadn't, so they didn't use any grease at all. $7.00 is a lot of money for shop towels and fluid top-up! She told me if I wasn't happy, they'd return my money but if I came back for other work in the future that's what they'd be charging. She also claimed that these charges "are standard for the industry" and that their oil changes were the cheapest on the market. To figure this out for myself, I asked her what the cost would be if they supplied the synthetic oil. She wouldn't tell me other than to say that she "needed to do an estimate" before she could answer that question. Really?! I decided NOT to get my $14.00 back because then I would have no grounds to complain. However, I think it's worth the loss so that I can warn people to stay away from this shop. If they think it's okay to overcharge for Hazmat and Shop supplies, what else are they going to overcharge for? read more
