I walked in and was second in line, I walked up to check in (that process hasn't changed) was handed my ticket and called to the counter immediately. My business was handled rather quickly and I was out of the DMV in MINUTES! Absolutely un-heard of for a DMV but yet I received quick, smooth, friendly service. I was throughly impressed.

Only qualm is that I was about 30 minutes early and could only be seen 15 minutes prior and had to wait in my car till that window. If you see this location pop up as an appointment choice check them out. They were quick, friendly and clean. Followed COVID measures of mask, sanitizing, and 6 foot distance.

Trouble is, at time of need, there was only 1 area DMV open #ThanksCovid. Booked a 540p Sat appointment online; received a "1 day" email reminder/confirmation. Though it's a trek from my house, the experience was worth the drive. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. In fact, my commute took longer than the appointment. Lots of parking available. On arrival (in my Phase 2 mask, semi-weird at a DMV) employee verifies admittance based on your name matching info on clipboard. Before approaching the main info desk, another employee sprays/wipes down surfaces between EVERY CUSTOMER. I provided all requested documents upon request. Rep approved and sent me to window 13. PRO TIP1: complete the online VA DMV Real ID pre-application BEFORE your appointment. SAVES TIME AND HEARTACHE: alerts you as to which documents you'll need along with the ability for the DMV rep to print the pre-filled application. I used valid US passport, expiring VA driver's license, social security card and mortgage statement. PRO TIP2: on the app, make sure to enter your name exactly how it appears. Some of my documents had my middle, some didn't. PRO TIP3: if you've had a name change (married or divorced) you'll need the marriage cert AND social security card with the NEW NAME. After confirming my organ donor status and never having a license in another state, I signed the pre-filled application, took a brief vision exam, then stood for a new photo (mask off). That flash IS BRIGHT! Paid $42 quickly via credit card and I was on my way. DMV accepts Apple Pay! FYI, you'll leave with a temp paper license until the RealID gets mailed from Richmond (7-10 days).

Don't get me wrong, this DMV is teeny in comparison to others nearby, but come early and you can get everything done quickly. Considering when I walked in at 10am this place was heaving and there wasn't a spare seat, I was seen to within 10 minutes of walking through the door, had my documentation uploaded onto the system, had my picture taken, and within the hour I'd taken my theory test and was on my way to getting the road test. I chose Smithfield as the area is a lot more relaxed (and quieter) then taking the road test in town, but also because the customer service experience was far more superior. All desks were occupied, people were seen to in a timely manner, the flow was smooth and people weren't waiting all day for walk ins. I highly recommend this DMV, whether it's to take your theory / road tests, updating your license or documentation, even coming in for a copy of your birth certificate or to sign up for TSA Pre-check, it's worth driving the extra miles than waiting all day. I was…read moretold here I would need to re-register my car and need VA plates despite not having VA as my resident state (here for a couple years due to the Navy). When I came to make that happen, someone drove into the DMV, so I was forced to go to another office. At the other office they informed me that I didn't have to register my car to VA due to military exemption. My husband registered his car here and retitled his car at this DMV. He was told there was a hold on his title and that he'd receive his title in the mail. After 3 weeks, I made him an appointment at the DMV as we hadn't received his new title and he had already paid for it. The appointment was at a different DMV. They informed him they hadn't correctly processed the title at this location and printed a copy for him on the spot. TL;DR: Avoid this place like the plague, unless you love wasting time!

The employee giving me info was very friendly and helpful and she moved me to the correct line. Next thing I know I am getting new plates and my Jeep in registered. Whaaaatt????? 30 minutes or less, in and out and I got info, new plates and my Jeep in registered. AND the employee that helped me was so friendly and we talked to each other the entire time. This was the first major election that I've voted at the Municipal Center rather than Bayside Rec Center. But in recent years the Rec Center has had large crowds, which defeated my goal of avoiding long lines. Having voted in primaries at the Municipal Center, I knew where to go. But for those who didn't, the Registrar's Office made finding the appropriate location easy. This is extremely helpful considering the plethora of buildings that comprise the Municipal Center. Driving east on Princess Ann Road one first sees a sign indicating that voting in the vehicle is only available for 65 and older. I'm sure that it also includes those with handicap placards. The spot was made more visible by numerous orange cones creating an area for a long line. On the sidewalk at the Princess Ann side of the building was a large tent surrounded by a really large display of candidate signs on each side. There was absolutely no way one could miss the spot. A friendly election official was waiting in the tent. He took our Driver's licenses and called our information inside with a 2-Way radio, Shortly afterwards another election worker came out with large envelopes which contained a ballot, a pen & an "I voted" sticker. The process couldn't have been easier. Having planned another stop afterwards, I followed my GPS and turned north at the side of the building. I immediately saw a sign directing one to turn right for those voting inside the building. It also directed individuals to the ballot drop box. So I made my GPS unhappy by turning to explore that side of the building. A large signage display surrounding tents for both political parties was immediately visible. They were staffed and located on both sides of the sidewalk leading to the back entrance of the business. There was absolutely no doubt where one should enter. I highly recommend that those planning to vote early visit the Registrar's office before the lines become long. They're extremely efficient and pleasant.
