Knowing that I wanted to have a photofacial while vacationing in NYC, I found DLK through Lifebooker and decided to try out their Ultrasmooth option -- a photo rejuvenation session with a glycolic peel. They had a really great deal on Lifebooker and very strong Yelp reviews, so I thought it couldn't be TOO bad. Ha! I should have been tipped off when I tried to call and get more information about the treatment multiple times but no one ever answered during their operating hours. I went in for the treatment and was told that they were running behind... I told them that I had to leave by 3:45 at the absolute latest, which both ladies working there insisted was plenty of time. About 30 minutes after my appointment time, I am taken to the room to get ready. Although the technician explains that I need to take everything off up top and use the cover-up, she comes back in 30 seconds later without any warning, while I'm in the middle of changing! So much for privacy. Once I laid down to start the treatment, it did get somewhat relaxing. The peel came first, which was a bit painful on one part of my face. Then the photofacial -- don't waste your money (It isn't clear what kind of laser they use from their website -- but this is NOT IPL -- apparently it is a "cold laser"... which does not work like the IPL photofacial I have had in the past, where you can actually see a difference in your skin). I left with slightly softer skin (probably due to the moisturizer she applied at the end), but literally I saw ZERO results from this. The peel just caused my skin to flake in some areas, but no change in the complexion or anything. I hate thinking about the money I completely wasted on this. The icing on the cake -- what really made me go from a two start review to a one star review -- was the way that my time table was completely disregarded. I was getting a little worried about the time, so I asked to make sure that she kept an eye out when the treatment was close to over. The response was "oops... it's 3:55..." and when I was rushing to run out the door AFTER 4PM, she said "oh well, it's not like your THAT late". Excuse me? Last time I checked, I was the customer, and I meant what I said when I needed to leave BY 3:45. I made that clear much earlier, but she obviously didn't find it to be important. read more

Well...I wanted to be impressed, but wasn't. I had the DLK Signature Treatment, which consisted of a facial and a LED (Revitalight) treatment-- both of which struck me as ineffective (the facial due to ~1 minute's worth of extractions--LAME--and the LED treatment because I can do LED at home with my baby quasar and baby blue). I should say that I have relatively great skin (in others' eyes), but I KNEW that I had more than a moment's worth of extractions--as I cleaned my facial clock at home following my treatment--which should have been readily viewable (and removable) by the esthetician who used a lighted magnifying loop. The livingroom-esque feel of the place and the micro-sized, closet-esque treatment rooms didn't really bother me as I'm much more about the service than the environmental aesthetics (especially when my eyes are closed mos of the time), but I really don't feel that I received my money's worth (even as I was, retrospectively, armed with a lifebooker deal). BOTTOM LINE: The DLK SIgnature Treatment facial would likely be great for those who don't need (or care about) extractions. The photolight technology and treatment were questionable at best and, in my opinion, not worth the added cost. I'd recommend looking elsewhere for more powerful and proven age spot lightening and skin firming results (perhaps with an IPL or similar laser?). read more

I had the best waxing experience here, at the most crucial time (the week before my wedding)!!! WHAT AN AWESOME FIND! I stumbled upon DLK through Groupon and I'm so glad I did...I'm keeping my eyes open for more. The place was quiet and relaxing. The "front desk" service was super friendly. I can't remember who did my waxing, but she was absolutely fantastic. The room was incredibly clean and the woman was so great at her job. It was seriously the least painful Brazilian I've ever had!!! She was thorough, fast, and very friendly and kind the entire time. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! I went in for the groupon special braziliian wax which stated a 45 minute session which was why I bought it - I thought the technician would be thorough. I guess she was in the way no one who gives a wax should ever be. She went over the same patches multiple time until i was practically in tears AND had the nerve to tell e she was waxing in different places each time. It was 15 minutes at the most Finally, she "finished" and left the room. I am not exaggerating when I say that it looked like Gollum's head. Somehow she leftsingle pieces of hair sporadically all over!!! I didn't care anymore and got the hell out of dodge. Its been over 2 weeks and I am starting to get a lot of painful pimples because of blocked follicles. I have gotten a lot of waxes- and quite a few brazilans- and I never had this bad of an experience. If you like your body please do not go here. Truly terrible. Dingy, and the massage therapist had no idea what she was doing. It was more of a patting-on of body oil than a massage, even though I requested deep tissue. Her hands were calloused too, so it was like patting with sandpaper. Cut it short and left more tense than I went in. read more

I went in for a European Facial with Angela and had a fantastic time! I booked the appointment through Lifebooker and got a generous discount, which definitely helped the experience. But even if I had paid full price, it still would have been worth it. Angela paid attention to all my skin care concerns and needs and addressed them wonderfully, while making me feel comfortable at the same time. I wasn't rushed at all, and as I left, I wasn't pressured to purchase any superfluous products, which can be a little distressing after such a relaxing experience. The (waxing) service itself is good, but the customer service this time was awful. I have been going here for over a year, but when the technician was ill they did not even bother to call me ahead of time. I travel 40+ blocks to go here because I like the technician, so it was a huge inconvenience to arrive there only to be told she was not available. The only person available was someone who says she could "try to do it for me" but was not confident given that she hasn't waxed very often. When I asked why they didn't call me, they claimed their phones weren't working and they didn't have my phone number (clearly not true since I had been there numerous times). I had been going to DLK for about a year and a half...I'd only seen Angela and Dina and I was MORE than happy with the service I received (waxing). However, something changed in the past couple of months, especially since there was a Groupon there...there are new employees, it's harder to get an appointment, and during my last visit I was horrified to see several pubes all over the table where I had to lie down...yikes. I had to ask for extra paper to be sure I wouldn't touch it (I should have just left). I have NEVER experienced this with Angela or Dina, but it seems that the service is changing there. I have been searching for a new electrolysis since moving to NY from LA and have had some horrible experiences. I finally tried out DLK after lots of yelp searching and asking around. Although some of the other reviews are not wrong about the physical atmosphere of the place, I think a good electrolysis is not at all about the atmosphere (I cannot, however, say the same about a massage). I made an appointment for a facial through Lifebooker and even though it was at a bargain rate, it was not a bargain at all. The place was dark and dingy and the room used for the facial was cell-like at best. It was chilly, dreary, crowded with random furniture including banged up metal cabinets and worst of all, the sheet used to cover me was dirty, dirty dirty. I don't know why I stayed. When the woman placed the steamer over my face, only half of my face was covered and she never moved it to steam the other half. She worked quickly and abruptly on extractions, slapped some cream on my face and that was that. See ya! Will I return? Never! Even if it were free? Never! read more

The atmosphere is not like a spa. It's a dingy place that smells weird. No showers or dressing rooms. Massage was also weird. The masseuse was thorough but she talked to me the entire time and then told me I needed to work out more. Not recommended. read more

I found DLK through a groupon deal I purchased for a brazilian waxing session. After my first appointment with Angela, I will never go to anyone else for waxing again. I have since recommended her to friends, and they all feel the same way. Having such good experiences with Angela's waxings, I thought I'd book a facial. Angela was again amazing. Thorough, professional and I was not rushed at all. Go to DLK if you want good and knowledgeable service in a modest space. The technicians there are on top of their game. Don't go to DLK if you want a spa experience with champagne and mud baths. It is a no frills, yet high quality of care spa. DO NOT GO HERE! I know they have a deal, but it is not worth it. I went for a bikini wax today and was shocked at unprofessionalism. I walked in and was led into a dirty room. A kitchen knife was sitting in the wax bowl, left over from the last client. An old wall paper scraper, covered in paint lay below the wax amongst other debris. The woman who did my bikini wax refused to wear gloves even though I asked her to. Throughout the wax she kept complaining that the past client's perfume was making her nauseous. She told me she had to leave the door open because she needed air, and even though there were no clients in the waiting room at that point, someone could have easily walked in and seen me without pants. Soon after, she told me she was done and left the room immediately, but she did such a patchy job I had to call her back in. She refused to do more, complaining about how dizzy she was, and called another woman to finish. The second technician had to completely redo the wax, and throughout complained that my hair was difficult to see. I have had probably one hundred bikini waxes and have never heard that before. While the second technician was completing wax, I could hear the first technician complaining about how allergic she was to perfume. I do feel sympathy for the first technician and her nausea, but it is incredibly unprofession to leave a job unfinished, to leave a door open, to keep the waxing area dirty and to switch technicians in the middle of a service. Seriously, save your money. read more

While there is nothing luxurious about this spa, at least from entrance to room I had my wax done.... The service (the actual brazilian wax) was excellent. It was the least painful wax I have had in years and there were no hairs to be found.... Angela was sweet, professional and very welcoming. I still think the little entrance needs a little upgrade but for the service and price I can overlook that... Def. will try it again. read more

Been there only once. Not too fancy and don't try to pressurize you (like some other places do) to vouch for chocolate or honey or strawberries and all that jazz! I scheduled a Swedish massage a week prior to my appointment. I planned my day around this massage and had it strategically scheduled on the first day of my vacation. I arrived 10 minutes before my appointment to chaos. The lady at the front desk told me that while I was scheduled in "the book" no one had bothered to assign a massage therapist. Since none of them were around that day, I was out of luck. In her defense she did try to give me a discount for another visit. But I would rather pay full price at a professional place that is capable of taking a reservation and respects the time of their clients. What a disappointing experience! read more

I've been going to DLK for years, for waxings (from Angela) and electrolysis (from Daphne). I am extremely happy with the services, or I wouldn't keep going back. I noticed a few negative comments about decor, and I do want to note that they have refurbished the waiting area and some of the rooms, and it is more attractive. But I never found it dirty. In fact, I am impressed with the cleanliness of the place and have never had any kind of problem. Don't mistake the use of common objects (such as kitchen knives) for lack of cleanliness, please. Sometimes things that look shiny and new aren't clean, and older, worn things are quite sanitary. I think DLK does a great job, and I enjoy the relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. read more
