I just had a scuba refresher course with DJ's Scuba Locker, and I think they do a very good job. Two friends and I met at the shop, where we met the owners and our instructor, Zach. After completing some forms, we were fitted with shorty wet suits, BCs and the yoke with the hoses for the regulators, BC attachment and air pressure gauge. Zach instructed us review all the equipment as if were at a renting scuba shop, and I found that my regulator's mouth fitting was damaged, and he immediately replaced it. First Zach helped us remember how to set up our gear, while adding many useful suggestions and knowledge to the session. Once we assembled our tanks and BCs with his guidance, he made us do it all again, but by ourselves, only saying something if we were doing something incorrectly. After this, he packed all our gear and we went to a YMCA nearby to do the actual diving refresher. The equipment worked well. He had practice 25 (might have been 28) skills for recertification. He is a very good instructor, meeting each person where they are at and helping with their needs. All the time he kept emphasizing important points and talking about what to expect at our dive shop because of his knowledge of similar places. When we were done, Zach packed everything and we left. He is a very affable, pleasant, and professional young man who knows his subject matter very well. The owners of the shop are also very nice, we had an opportunity to talk to them as well. I bought a mask, which the lady owner had me try several sizes and qualities and helped me decide on one that was very comfortable and very reasonably priced. I give the whole operation, but especially Zach, 5 stars. My friends agreed with this rating. I will be going back there for my diving needs. read more

I just finished the second part of my Open Water Dive Training with DJ Scuba, and it was fantastic. I met both of the owners; one when I was getting fitted, and the other when I was picking up my gear, and they were both extremely nice and helpful. They went over the gear with me and made sure it fit properly, and it was all in pretty good condition. My instructor's name was Jeff. He was very nice and even let me dive even though the first day I came two hours late because my alarm clock died. I had already come to terms with how screwed I was and didn't expect to be able to get certified before I left on my trip, but when I called the dive shop to see if there was any way I could still dive, they called Jeff to let him know I was coming late and he fit me in before his next group! My only gripe is that they're a little far out of the way (I live in Chicago), but I took Ogden straight there and it wasn't too bad, maybe 25 minutes each way. read more

Went here to get a mask for a trip to warmer climates where I planned on snorkeling. I got a good mask, a great snorkel, and a dive bag, and all worked out real well on my trip. I was worried I spent too much money at first but after having all those hassles of ill-fitting masks and sucking in saltwater disappear it was well worth every penny. She spent a good amount of time making sure i had the right facemask that fit, starting from low prices to high. She knew a lot and answered all my dumb questions. I just finished my PADI Open Water Dive Training with DJ Scuba. It was a great experience. It was a very thorough course and never felt like it was a quick in and out. The classroom portion was held at DJ's, the prepatory dives were help at a pool nearby and the 2 open water dives were done in Kankakee. Cindy & Dan (the owners) were both very knowledgable and helpful. Our dive-master instructor, Jason, was a great teacher and very patient with our group. It is an easy drive down #55 from the city so it's alot closer than it may seem. Highly recommended. read more

If I could give DJ's 11 stars I would. Unreal customer service. My situation would have been a nightmare for most shops...2 young kids (11 and 12), both play travel hockey (i.e. very little free time), and I contacted them in late January wanting to get both certified for a March 18 vacation to Hawaii. They worked with my schedule more than could have reasonably been expected. Dan and Cindy, as well as John who helped schedule us (and did a great refresher course for my wife and I) are absolutely awesome. And then there's my kids' instructor, Marty. What a great teacher. He even got extra pool sessions for my kids, again around busy schedules, to make sure they completed all of the exercise thoroughly. His dedication is amazing. Because of their willingness to work with our schedule, my kids were able to dive with us in Hawaii. The instructor for their open water referral dives was amazed at how well prepared they were. Again, tons of credit to DJ's and to Marty. DJ's does not rush you through the certification process; they are thorough, professional, and very focused on customer service. I am so thankful to them for allowing my family to have this experience together. They also have a very nice shop and very reasonable prices on nice equipment. We tried to take our open water certification class through DJ's, but it seemed that every time we called we got a different story. Unfortunately we had already purchased our PADI books through them, and when we gave up and went to another shop we were told that DJ's had sold us old materials. We also learned that the dive log in the packet was the new one, so it seems someone pulled a switcheroo of some sort with the book. We mentioned it to them and they were surprised at this. Disappointed that we ended up not using a shop close to our house, but they need to get their act together. read more

Found this quirky little shop via The Google as I was driving home on Ogden and in need of a swim item for vaca, which was the next day. Bought a professional grade scuba/swimshirt, even though fit was not quite perfect, but that's my issue;) Found a better fitting shirt at a chain store later that day. Called and stopped in asking if I could return, not exchange, 17 days later, since it sat on my passenger seat with receipt since the day I bought it. Standard response was, store credit. Makes sense. As I was telling the owner that while it seemed they were stand up folks and had cool gear, I wasn't a scuba diver and the likelihood of me finding anything else was slim, he slammed his hand down, yelled to his worker to give me a credit, and pointed at me and boomed "NEVER come back in here again! This is the THIRD time you've done this!". Swear to God I thought I was being punked. Insane, unhinged, ballistic, you pick it. Yeah, I'm trying to game you over a $40 shirt. I do it all the time. Reminder that I had never, ever been in their store. When I suggested that he was a bit....um.....insane, he wanted me to sit down and chat. I declined this offer, he gave me the usual "we're a small business" excuse which apparently allows an owner to become unglued when faced with such hard hitting customer requests, and disappeared into the back. I'm guessing it was his lovely, loathing spouse who completed the credit process with disdain, having bought into the story. Nice couple and a real asset to the Lyons retail corridor. Wow...is all I can say. Clearly a specialty store with lots of cool stuff, but with the odds being 2-1 that you'll meet an unmedicated owner, I'd go to the next one on the list. read more

I did my open water certification here two years ago and frequently rent from and shop at DJ's. They offer a variety of flexible options for certifications from the most economical group five week class to a weekend private class. The class was a blast, and I was very comfortable and excited when I actually did the open water portion. The staff and owners are all very nice and helpful. If you are going on a trip, get your certification here first, so you can jump right in to the fun dives on your vacation. The local diving at the Kankakee quarry that DJ's uses is a lot of fun too. Just finished my Solo Diver certification with DJs Scuba Locker. I'm pretty tired, but had a great experience. Dan went through class work with me and shared his tremendous experience with me. During the certification dive, it turned out I was the only diver that day. Instead of rushing through it, he spent the full day with me at the quarry. Not only did spend the day teaching me about Solo diving, he helped me shed a couple pounds of weight and helped answer some other questions. I've had about a dozen dive instructors. I've been going to this shop exclusively since 2000. The prices and services CANNOT be beat by any other Chicago-area scuba shop. I've gotten both my Open Water and Advanced Open Water certifications through this shop. The training is well managed and comprehensive. The prices for equipment are great, if they don't have something, they will get it for you quickly. If you have a problem with your purchase or are unhappy with it, both Dan and Cindy work to satisfy you. I have my regs, computer, BC and tanks serviced annually through them, and my regulators from the 1980's still work like they're brand new. The shop-sponsored dive trips are well run, organized and fun (I've gone to Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and North Carolina with them). I can't wait for my return trip to the East End of Grand Cayman in APril of 2013. People who travel with the shop quickly become friends. These guys are awesome. I have experienced their service as well as another dive shop in the city (I initially started my certification course elsewhere and took half of my close water dives elsewhere and asked to finished them at DJ Scuba mainly due to scheduling conflicts with my work, but I also because I noticed that the other instructor had no patience to answer questions -more than once- or to go over skills again in the close water dive in the pool). Not these guys. The difference is night and day. Lenny was an awesome instructor and I highly recommend him. All the folks at DJ Scuba are fantastic and highly enthusiastic about everything. Like another reviewer mentioned, they will definitely go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied (one time I arrived 5min to closing, and had no feeling of being rushed whatsoever, in fact they spent almost one hour explaining things to me at that time!).
