I bought a Groupon for PADI Open Water Certification with D D Dive Shop. Good in class content - straight-forward and the owner Ralph made it easy to learn what was needed. Within a month of the class I did my first two dives in The Maldives and unfortunately due to COVID-19 didn't have a chance to get the other dives completed until July. Nevertheless, Ralph and team were excellent from the academic part, through pool training and my last two dives that we did at Haigh Quarry. Went to DD Dive wanting to learn the fun of scuba diving. Ralph was knowledgeable and honest with me in regards to the class, items I would need and the fun I will be having. When I wanted to purchase items that were unique, Ralph was willing and able to order my items that I wanted. The class was very intimate as we had 5 people in our group. This made for the pool sessions to be super fun and very informative. We had a lot of one on one time. Going to the quarry for my open water certification was very nerve racking. Great place - great experience! Perfect place to get PADI certified or to go for refresher courses. I came with a group of friends to get PADI certified here before a trip and we were all more than prepared for our open water dives and felt so comfortable on vacation when scuba diving. The guys at D D Dive were really great! My wife and I just went out for an introductory course, and would totally go back to get our scuba certification if it was closer to home in the city instead of the burbs. The course was more than an introductory lesson really, I had never scuba'd before and by the end I felt like I could go off on my own. They even let us spend extra time in the pool after the lesson. Really a high class operation, the instructors were fun to work with and I would absolutely recommend to anyone in the area. read more

They hold class at the Glenview location (text review) but you do your pool practice at the Des Plaines YMCA - then for your final open water dive you will go to Joliet and dive in a quarry (which was freaky because there was no visibility). Many of these guys are bilingual : Polish & English. I find them most professional, commited and FUN oriented. Now I can't imagine scubadiving trips without them. I started my PADI Open Water dive certification course with D D Dive (taking the coursework online) and confined water dives in Glenview. Everything about this place: the equipment and the training are top-notch. Even before starting coursework, I picked up the minimum amount of gear I would need from the very comprehensive array of in-store merchandise. I might have been skeptical at first but everything that was suggested to me ("You'll really want this, trust me.") turned out to be spot-on when I arrived in Cancun to meet friends and complete the final parts of my certification. The time we spent selecting the correct mask paid off: it fit perfectly and had corrective lenses that were impeccably installed and was comfortable to wear dive after dive. Further, when I arrived in Cancun I was the only one among my friends who had comfortably mastered the confined water skills. Since they had all gone to different dive shops, I was particularly pleased (smug?) with the effectiveness of the training I'd received. Now that I have an Open Water certification, I hope to return to D D Dive for more advanced training and organized dives. read more

Terrible service. I went there in Dec. of 2013 to get two of my regulators serviced and was THOUROUGHLY disappointed. The person that I was working with this entire time was named Ralph. I am in the industry and I work on regulators and have been around regulator servicing for quite some time now and have never really come across a situation like this. I am moving out to the Philippines in just a few days and was travelling through Illinois to see my parents before leaving. On this trip I figured I would get my 2 Mk25's, G250v, S600 serviced. I called around to a few Scubapro dealers and decided on a dive shop about 30 minutes away since they seemed like they knew what they were talking about. I took my regulators in and dropped them off and got a date at which they were going to be completed. I waited a couple of days and got a call telling me that they were serviced and ready for pick up. I went in, paid $250 (Not too reasonable in the first place for 4 stages) and left. Once I got back in the car I realized that he never gave me my old parts so I began inspecting them and really didn't feel that anything had been done to them. I went home and removed my hose from the second stage and saw a lot of corrosion. Clearly they hadn't even been opened. So I looked in the first stage at the high pressure chamber and saw old o-rings covered in old cristolube that I put in there. I normally service my regs, but didn't have time or the tools to do so in Illinois. So I called the dive shop back and explained the situation. He seemed hardly surprised to hear what I had to say, but did apologize and told me to bring the regulators back and he would make sure that they got taken care of. With some reluctance I decided to take the regs back and see what would come of it. In a few more days I got them returned and they were serviced, quite nicely I have to say. The problem started when I asked for a price decrease due to the bad service. He told me that his hands were tied because he goes to a third party source for his servicing and he couldn't refund me anything. If I was in his position I would have my tail between my legs and be trying to find a reasonable compromise to the mistake. Instead his offer to me was that I could have a free T-Shirt or Hat. I left without taking either, because truth be told that really offended me. He told me that he would service my regulators as long as I paid. I paid him and he gave me my regulators back without ever being opened. Mistake or not, that is unacceptable. As a dive shop owner you should know what a serviced regulator looks like. This is a major safety issues as these are the regulators I use for my mains in trimix. I also teach trimix diving, so to have inadequately serviced equipment is not only a major risk for me, but for my students as well. Luckily I knew what I was looking for when he returned them to me. It took me having to reach out to him for him to realize his mistake. If I was just an average customer he would've made his $250 and been on his way and I would've been out the money and have potentially faulty regulators. Sorry if I went on a bit of a rant there, but I just find this a terrible business practice and to tell the customer that there is nothing he can do about quite honestly trying to rip him off and then offer him a t-shirt or hat is just unacceptable. read more
