The Dunbar holds a great significance to the black Tucson…read morecommunity as it was Tucson's segregated school for African American students until desegregation in 1951, and I'm glad to see that it's being preserved and utilized to uplift the community in the current day. There's multiple events held here monthly, including The Slide Society's line dance classes on Thursday nights at 6PM, which I really enjoy! In addition to this, there's also the barbershop and school that lives here, a healthy food prep restaurant I think, various community classes, and even the "Connections That Count" events that take place at 5 PM every first Wednesday that target, various themes and aim to build a better community (ABC) through fellowship and networking. There's really so many great things to say about the Dunbar and community events that occur here! Definitely worth checking out.

Currently it serves as a community center, a school, a barber academy, and it rents space out to artists and dancers and educators and even a publishing house! They have some great community programs and I was there for the Free Vegan Cooking class. The speaker, I believe her name is Rosie Kennedy, was great; equal parts knowledgeable and warm and engaging. She broke down a topic that can be daunting and demo'd a couple of recipes. Highly recommend signing up for any of her future programs if they (hopefully!!) have them. The space itself is not great for a cooking lecture because it's not a kitchen. The speaker did an amazing job, especially with all the constraints but she could have really benefitted from a more functional set-up. The room feels like its seen better days but they do have this super cool canvas wrapped around 2 of the walls that documents the history of the local African American community and the Dunbar. All in all I really appreciate having this resource in the community and look forward to their future programs!

The event featured refreshing mocktails afterward and a variety of wellness-focused vendors, which made the whole experience feel intentional and community-centered. We also did a HIIT workout led by K Fit, and it was such a great workout--energizing, fun, and accessible for different fitness levels. What I loved most was the atmosphere. The outdoor setting was beautiful, and it was such a great place to network, meet new people, and make new friends in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Whether you're attending a wedding or a special event, Historic Bates Mansion is a unique and charming space that brings people together. I'd love to come back for another event!

This place is absolutely stunning and full of character. The architecture, décor, and layout feel like a time capsule in the best way possible--layered with history, charm, and so many unique spaces that it honestly feels endless. Courtyards, rooms, nooks, multiple levels... every corner feels like it could host something special. It's one of those buildings where you keep discovering new areas as you walk through, and your mind immediately starts racing with ideas for gatherings, pop-ups, workshops, socials, and creative events. Everything about the space feels intentional, warm, and visually rich without being overdone. Easily one of my favorite event venues I've come across in Tucson so far. Whether you're visiting from out of town or looking for a memorable place to host something locally, this is absolutely worth checking out.

The second you walk in, you feel so welcome and comfortable. She's got decor on every wall and pieces that you can buy/rent for your wedding. The blue velvet couch was my favorite spot, as you could sit for a while and chat about packages and pricing. I like the decor in her shop and love how easy it is to go in and find exactly what you need. She even rents the space out for events and girls nights, and I can't wait to go back.

She really did have some great local vendors that worked well with our plans from planning weeks in advance to last minute reservations minutes before the ceremony! You'd be surprised with the deals she gets through vendors, pretty much takes care of whatever money you thought you'd save not having a planner. She makes magic happen! While I cannot thank her enough, I'd recommend her to all taking the leap into marriage.

We have always been curious about staying here and now we can check it off our list. Check in was easy breezy. They offer $10 parking in a nearby garage but we opted for street parking and that worked out just fine for us. Also they do old school actual keys. You can leave it with the front desk if you like and pick it up each time you head up to your room. We had a great room, #214. Large corner room with two big windows, one overlooking the outdoor space of Hotel Congress. Great king sized bed, super comfortable with excellent bedding. Please note--there are no TVs in the rooms. Also our room was allegedly a haunted one, but we didn't notice any activity in that front. They offer some in-room snacks and goodies for purchase. And they also have a cool radio turned to the station that broadcasts from the lobby! It also offers an easy Bluetooth hookup. There is a great little courtyard, so cute, that accommodates 6 people. And there is a community TV as well. Now the noise! Beware. We had requested a "quiet" room, and while we were not above the club, our room overlooked the main stage out back and there was a DJ going until 2 am so it was plenty loud. So we just decided to go with it and join the party and dance until close and we had a great time. Not something we typically do anymore these days, but super fun. And the crowd really seemed like a slice of true Tucson. All ages and all demographics just out for a fun time. In the morning, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast at Cup Cafe and checked out very easily. We enjoyed our time here, but needed a few days to recover from our late night! Thank for a fun and memorable time Hotel Congress!

The reason for one star: they ruined our sand ceremony keepsake. Once the reception started our gifts, cards and sand kit was placed inside. Once the party was over they lock up. Understandable it's someone's home. That's when I realized our sand kit with our sand keepsake was locked inside. I asked if we can go grab it and they refused. Ok again I understand that it's someone's house but none of the staff or anyone working there offered to go back inside and grab it. I asked when can we get it and They said Monday! Wedding was on a Saturday and We're from Phoenix so it's a bit of a drive. So we drive back to the mansion to pick it up and they left the box on the porch. I grab it and opened it up and they had turned the box upside down so the sand was falling out and it got all mixed up! Now every time I look at our keepsake I'm reminded of how terrible they were to us and how they had no consideration for our belongings. Just throw it outside on the porch. Unfortunately I do not recommend this place. Pic below shows the front and the back.
