Located off the main drag of Sydney Rd, Divali is one of those shops that locals walk past all the time yet of which visitors to the area are less likely to recognise. It plays host to a positive glut of clothing, jewellery, art, ornaments, household goods and the odd independently produced cosmetic.
You enter the store through a pokey, enclosed door painted as though it were the walkway to the office of a prison warden, in high contrast to the bold and extroverted red signage. Once inside, splashes of bright colours beam out from all the racks and most of the shelves. It's not that there's nothing black, white or otherwise monochromatic amongst its wares; but there's certainly a blatant (and welcome) affection for colour at Divali.
The clothes are a mix of European and Australian designers, but all with a distinctive, 'independent designer' kind of aesthetic that tends to be skipped over in the knock off outlets. The jewellery also covers an assortment of tastes and styles.
The ornaments and household items are a tad haphazard, but are all located down the back of the shop. It's a bit random as to what you'll find, but I daresay anyone who likes Japanese inspired placemats will be satisfied.
Like most gift and clothes based retailers, it's not the sum of its' parts more than the opportunity for a real find; be it ornament, clothing or jewellery, that you weren't even looking for. I got a green waist belt from there a few years back that's still serving me admirably to this day.
A good place to gift hunt or pass the time with general browsing. However, be warned: opening hours alter between summer and winter. read more
