We were only in town for a few hours, but when we found out they had them we decided we would devote day's visit to Franziskaner. The staff were so friendly and helpful. They helped us work through ordering, as finding these delights on the menu can be tricky for an English speaker. Our server was an absolute delight, though, and he helped us find them and place an order with the amount we wanted (can we order 100 please?). We also ordered a sample of sausages featuring 4 different kinds. And, of course, BEER! Giant liters full. We were able to try two different kinds and they were delish. Our server was also great conversation and gave us info about other things in the area that were worth seeing, too. Let me tell you about that sausage though! We make our own at home, and we make it a point to order sausages everywhere we go. We're fans. Every single one of their sausages was drop dead delicious. Perfect textures, no graininess, delicate, with snap where it should have snap. All the flavors of each were perfection. And the Nurnbergs tasted just like the ones we'd had in Nuremberg 7 years ago. It was such a delight. P.S. their sauerkraut was the best I've had IN. MY. LIFE. The interior was perfect, too. Traditional Bavarian style, cozy wooden booths with pillows, beautiful checkered blue and white curtains. And CLEAN beautiful bathrooms!! When we visited the toilets we realized there was a whole dining area above where we'd dined, so they can accommodate some crowds for sure! I am so glad we made the effort and spent all our time that day there. They took care of us completely and I would return 100% the next time we're in Hamburg. Definitely worth it!

The food is traditional German, hearty and satisfying. You can go for a full platter or build your own with à la carte plate with sides and mains. As my pic shows, I went with the homestyle meatloaf, bacon potato salad, and sauerkraut, and honestly? No notes. The potato salad in particular was amazing--savory, slightly tangy, with real texture and smoky bacon goodness. Gröninger feels like a dungeon-meets-microbrewery as reviewer Keith H. said, and that's not just a vibe; it's literal. You're in the actual basement where the beer is brewed, and the low lighting and stone archways give it a cool, cave-like atmosphere. Totally agree with other reviewers that it's got character for days. Service is different than you might expect if you're not used to German customs. Wave for attention rather than waiting for a server to drop by, and just walk up to the host stand to pay. The one downside on my visit was that I came alone and got seated in the front spillover section, even though there were open seats inside the main room. The host said they were reserved, but I later saw bigger groups walk in and get those spots. So: come early, come with friends, or be prepared to hang in the front area, which is still charming. You get a great view of the whole space if you need to head to the bathroom. Overall: tasty beer, solid food, very atmospheric, and worth a stop whether you're here for a drink or a full meal. I'd absolutely come back. // Beginnen wir mit dem Bier. Ausgezeichnet.

This one place is also located in a basement level, dungeon like joint. German version of a micro brewery. Very good food, very good drinks and amazing service. Highly recommend this joint!!!!

If you're looking for the standard "German" place to eat while visiting Hamburg, this place is it…read more It's seated right along the Elbe River, with three floors worth of seating. The bottom two floors are full service dining, while the terrace is more relaxed with servers that mill about. All have great views of the river, and for my visit I enjoyed the sun up on the terrace. I arrived around 3pm on a Sunday, looking for a late lunch after walking and sightseeing all morning. A polite man pointed me upstairs when I said I wanted to sit outside, and found that you seat yourself up there when I arrived. They have English versions of the menu available with a QR code, and free wifi so no worries about roaming data when trying to decide what you want to eat. Also, plenty of the staff speak English, so for tourist that might ease your worries. I had their seasonal beer, which was a light wheat for the summer. It was the small size, and plenty for me as beer isn't always my go-to drink. My meal consisted of the fried fish (local white fish) with cucumber potato salad. Everything was fresh, tasty, and my favorite part was that salad. It was so different than my normal "American" potato salad and I loved it. My only complaint would be that their prices are on the high side. There's plenty of other places with cheaper options and probably larger plates. But for the atmosphere, I'd say it was worth it. It's a great establishment, with great homemade beer (their vats are right in the dining room), and very close to many tourist areas. I highly recommend a visit!
