This turned out to be quite the find during a recent trip to Hamburg. Late one evening I was frantically searching for something to eat as most restaurants seemed to be full or requiring a reservation. As I strolled through the city, I stumbled upon Paulaner's.... How lovely! I was greeted with a smile and directed towards a table to embark on what turned out to be a great meal! Turned out I was fortunate enough to have shown up on Schnitzel-Day(Monday). Thankful for the help of a local at the next booth I was directed to partake in Schnitzel-Day, FANTASTIC!!!! Highly Recommend!

6 small Nurnberg sausages on pickled cabbage and served with mashed potatoes

I mean....it's sausage and potatoes, ya just can't go wrong. It's literally the best mashed potatoes of my life! I wish I had more room. The serving size was hearty! The atmosphere is super quaint with what Imagine is filled with Bavarian trinkets and little German touches. I'm also very impressed with the non-alcoholic beer! So tasty, and you can keep your hangover thank you very much! I'm delightfully satisfied! One of staff that greeted me was kinda not so warm but, at least my server was nice and helpful. Overall, I took it all in and my belly is full!

Paulaner's is my favorite brewery/restaurant in Germany, and I am glad to see that there are 2 of them in Hamburg. The one closest to me was closed, but the hotel found this one, so I headed over here for a bite to eat. While not as good as the original in Munich, it was okay. We went on a Monday night, and it happened to be Schweinshaxen Night, which was what I had come for anyway! I had Spargelcremesuppe for a starter, then a Pork Knuckle for my main. I was a bit disappointed in the knuckle as it wasn't as hot and crispy as I normally like it. Perhaps they had planned for a busier Monday. In any case, the beer was cold, the staff happy and friendly and I was satisfied. I'll give it another go on a busier night next time...

I was about to give Paulana's just 4 stars but on thinking about it there is reason at all why this shouldn't be 5 stars. We live about 30 meters from here and have spent the past 6 months walking past it and wondering why it has had such mixed reviews here on Qype. Having spent the past 2 hours here I am none the wiser. We just had a really good family dinner, in a nice place with good service and really friendly staff. A big slap up meal for four with drinks, coffees and pudding for around £50. That's great value, plus on certain days of the week they feature some their dishes for half price. If it's haut cuisine you seek then Paulaner's isn't for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy sausages, meat, dumplings, beer, strudel served fast and with a smile from happy friendly staff dressed in south German attire you'll be in heaven.

A wide variety of food. No kids menu, but it was no problem to split a dish.

We were there on Saturday night with four adults and two kids. We were very pleased with the food. The portions were generous, and I felt they were a good value for the price. The restaurant seemed to have a good local clientele, however we felt very welcome. We were very happy to find reasonably priced German dishes close to our hotel.

A little bit overpriced for lunch! I went here for lunch and the place was really empty yet the service was a little slow. I ordered the California salad and it was barely decent and huge. The fruit on top is what saved the salad. The bottom of was filled with tasted like cardboard lettuce and a little watery. I would advise to stay away from the salads in this place!

Pretty rude staff. Didn't help to seat us. Would not speak in english. Maybe they don't like tourists... we left without ordering.

The atmosphere is cozy traditional. It's down a few steps from the street level and you enter a somewhat dark, candle lit dining area. The tables and seating seem to be an eclectic collection that work well together. My server was prompt and I ordered a "Jever" pilsner beer to start. She brought over an English menu and made some suggestions. I took her suggestion for "Pork medallions with button mushrooms ala creme and fried potatoes". This was three thick slices of pork tenderloin. This and the potatoes were delicious and a very generous portion. Enough for two meals, but I ate it all anyway. :) I wanted a somewhat traditional German-style meal and I believe that I got it. :) Cheers.

The bowl portion came with an entire smoked sausage and was a large portion. The rump steak was as good as it can be. The beef remoulade was not rolled but thin sliced cold beef served with some onions and a mild horse radish sauce. My companion enjoyed the herring plate. Four types of herring. All served with fried potatoes family style.

We were only in town for a few hours, but when we found out they had them we decided we would devote day's visit to Franziskaner. The staff were so friendly and helpful. They helped us work through ordering, as finding these delights on the menu can be tricky for an English speaker. Our server was an absolute delight, though, and he helped us find them and place an order with the amount we wanted (can we order 100 please?). We also ordered a sample of sausages featuring 4 different kinds. And, of course, BEER! Giant liters full. We were able to try two different kinds and they were delish. Our server was also great conversation and gave us info about other things in the area that were worth seeing, too. Let me tell you about that sausage though! We make our own at home, and we make it a point to order sausages everywhere we go. We're fans. Every single one of their sausages was drop dead delicious. Perfect textures, no graininess, delicate, with snap where it should have snap. All the flavors of each were perfection. And the Nurnbergs tasted just like the ones we'd had in Nuremberg 7 years ago. It was such a delight. P.S. their sauerkraut was the best I've had IN. MY. LIFE. The interior was perfect, too. Traditional Bavarian style, cozy wooden booths with pillows, beautiful checkered blue and white curtains. And CLEAN beautiful bathrooms!! When we visited the toilets we realized there was a whole dining area above where we'd dined, so they can accommodate some crowds for sure! I am so glad we made the effort and spent all our time that day there. They took care of us completely and I would return 100% the next time we're in Hamburg. Definitely worth it!

A little old school but I can respect it. We came in and filled the last table-the place was already so lively at 6:30 on a Sunday (Mother's Day). They have English menus and were (of course) offering an asparagus specialty menu. We went with a couple beers, a shandy, a Schnitzel, mixed fish plate and the whole fish. Everything was so delicious and we could see the singular chef working and the singular woman wait all the tables. The only thing was that the shandy was actually made on site, with sprite and beer from tap. It was an interesting flavor. Would recommend this to anyone to get Hamburg classics!
