Blockbrau's location right on Hamburg's harbor provides a splendid view of the Elbe river and the port. This brewery/restaurant is spread out over 3 floors of cavernous space for mingling and dining. The terrace is the place to be. When the sun is setting and the breeze cools you off on a warm day, nothing beats the feeling of sitting down with old pals and newly met ones. Indulge in one of their northern German specialties, nosh on a huge pretzel or simply throw back a few pints of their house beer. They also have a full bar, so you can order an appropriate summer drink like an Aperol spritz. HAMing it up in Hamburg.

I discovered this place on the second day of my four day trip to Hamburg, and I ended up eating there two more times. Each time I tries something different ( including both tasting platters), and I was never disappointed. The worst I can come up with is that I got a cold pretzel one day, and the steak tartar was only OK compared to the stuff I ate in PARIS. Other than that foodgasam after foodgasam. Try the hamburger style pan fried whitefish, and the suckling pig, and everything else. Oh the weisse beer is very good as well. I'm not usually a big fan, but this one is very delicate. Give it a try. It's worth it.

This place is getting 5 stars for the location, it's a nice interior and a priceless view onto the river Elbe and elements of the port. The beer is getting 5 stars, too - it's brewed in house. The food is very basic, but freshly cooked and reasonably priced. They have some larger tables in the center (good for groups). Smaller tables towards the windows and a nice patio on the roof! If you plan to go during prime time and/or with a larger group, there is no way around a reservation. I ordered a local speciality (fish) - it was Matjes with a white cold sauce with onions and pickles plus some mashed potatoes - I thought I can substitute the side with fried potatoes but they only have these occasionally, it was EUR 12.90. The food can't get a better rating than a 3. Lastly the waitress was a bit rough, but that is the Northern German mentality, so no issues for me, but foreign guests may get offended - that's another 3 stars - which explains my rating of 4.

    Wonderful Apple streusel!

Blockbrau is a must when visiting Hamburg. My second time here and it was as good as the first! I am not much of a beer drinker but love the wheat beer. You have to have a pretzel for an appetizer. I always get the six sausages with the sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. And end it with the Apple strudel! I like it with the ice cream the best! Oh yes, and don't forget to purchase the wonderful, magical seasoning! Only available there!

Nothing fancy, loud place, good bear and pretzels. Had the pig, not the greatest nor the worst. Good place to just drink and a meal.

When I went there last night, people were cool and laid back. No oom-pah band and locked arms, swaying, and singing (I'm being TOTALLY facetious here). Staff are hip too. About 45 people were in a group at tables getting a beer lecture/tasting. The hipness, the group tasting - - this illustrates the state of the craft beer movement in Germany today, and the beers reflect that as well: the beers are almost satisfying, almost good expressions of each style, almost worth drinking. I'm sure the 45 people getting the beer lecture/tasting found them curious, if not intriguing. (Reminds me of the state of the craft beer movement in the U.S. 15 or 20 years ago.) I've had a few of the Hopper before, but they are not something I buy to drink at my home in Hamburg. For someone from the States, who is used to picking up plenty GREAT expressions of the different styles they make, which you can get in many shades of excellence in the U.S., it's not worth committing 12 ounces of palate time and belly space to what are, basically, nice attempts. At the brewpub I had the "Salonsozialist" weizenbock - - it was almost worthwhile, but lacking when compared to such immaculate standards here as the Weihenstephaner Vitus, or Schneider Aventinus. It isn't worth the trek out here to have something not in the same league. And, overall, unless German craft brewers can start producing really stellar beers, and not just 'almosts', and flawed expressions, hip though it may be, the craft brew movement in Germany will be on shaky footing.

I misread the business hours and showed up on a day that the tasting room was closed. I was still…read moreable to buy a few bottles, though. The folks there were very friendly and helpful to me. I had the Dunkle Macht that night and it was very impressive. It easily unseats my previous favorite porters. I can't wait to try the other two beers. I'd like to thank the people working there for being kind and helpful. Hopefully I'll be able to return again!

I just wish they had longer opening hours and were also open on the weekend! Also, offering beers in larger quantities would be nice as well, instead of getting up and walking to the counter to order a new one frequently :) Hamburg (and Germany in general) needs more places like this for sure!

OK, it's settled. Next time I go out for a really satisfying beer in Hamburg, it's Circle 8…read more Why? Because the nascent craft brew scene in the Hansestadt suffers from two problems: 1) fear of alienating German lager drinkers by serving them up something too genuinely flavorful; and, 2) creating weak, flawed, amateurish versions of pale ales, IPAs, et cetera because they just aren't very good at it. Circle 8 does NOT suffer from these failings. The black IPA I had there, was probably the best I've ever had. It was lush, lively, complex, rich, balanced, and at the same time wonderfully unique. Hands down, a winner. The Citra Blonde had lovely citra character, and some real assertiveness too - - also lush and rich - - this is REAL brewing - - real hand-crafted care - - and the beers go the distance. The 5-grain I had was a bit jarring at first, because it is is also a no-compromise flavor conveyor, but I came to appreciate it over the course of the glass. The owners are delightful; they have a dedicated local following (which they fully deserve); the hours are limited (4p-8p Mon-Friday) so you have to time your visit, but it is totally worth the while. A lushness, richness, flavor oasis in what is otherwise a tepid sea of craft beer mediocrity in Hamburg. You could call it a "geheimtipp" (secret recomendation) but I hope it doesn't stay that way for long. It's a two block walk from U-bahn Alsterdorf, and a pretty little bahn trip up through Eppendorf, and a joyous little stroll, it totally is.
