Fast forward to 2023, I'm a 34-year-old 240lb MAN, and I decided to tap back into myself by spontaneously enrolling into a drop-in ballet class on a random cold Tuesday night, and I'm glad i did! The venue is clean and the staff is friendly and inclusive. The instructor, Rachel, was great. The class was packed and for all levels, but Rachel created an environment that made me feel comfortable and took all my nervousness (and low key embarrassment) away. i enjoyed it so much that i took my (clearly out of shape) behind to her Modern Dance class immediately after. And I paid for it... i was sore for days. It felt GREAT! :) Although both classes were for All Levels, I would've appreciated if the instructor showed movements full out instead of marking the steps and throwing us newbies to the wolves. Also I would love for Joy of Motion in general to host more adult beginning-level ballet classes or a flexibility, conditioning, and strengthening class using ballet techniques. Joy of Motion is a beautiful venue conveniently located in the up-and-coming H Street corridor. Overall, I had an amazing first-time experience and i will certainly return.

The choreography was just challenging enough to give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, but still have something to work on at home. I was lucky to be able to take Afro Jazz that day because the class had been cancelled online (I just saw it listed on the paper schedule and decided to drop in). Fortunately, two other ladies missed the memo as well, and we ended up having a wonderful class experience. I had to ding the studio a star both because it was freezing cold in the studio and because it smelled awful when I entered. I understand that many classes share these spaces, but a hit of Febreeze air freshener before and after classes would work wonders!

The teacher only taught to get "favorite"3 kids in class and didn't even bother to look at anyone else. I spoke to the director regarding this and she told me that yes, many other parents were complaining about this teacher and that she would talk to her and make sure it stopped but didn't. The teacher, Frominich, continued to only teach to a few kids ignoring everyone else. Terrible awful program. Don't waste your money. In the end the director of the school apologized and said they wouldn't hire this teacher again, little help that was to my daughter and the others.

The teachers at Excel really know their stuff. This isn't a studio that offers a zillion different…read moretypes of fitness classes, they focus on what they do best: pilates classes and pilates teacher training. Part of becoming a certified teacher at Excel is completing student teaching hours. I was able to train with individuals going through the program at a reduced rate because they were not certified teachers yet. It was completely fantastic. Having the one-on-one instruction was so helpful and it gave me an opportunity to train on the apparatus. Excel teaches the traditional pilates method and really wants the students to learn how to do the movements correctly. If you only have done pilates at home with a DVD, I definitely suggest taking a class here. The teachers corrections and attention to detail are amazing. The mat classes are by registration only, and are usually six weeks long. This is not a drop in type of place, the teachers want you to progress each week. The studio is a converted warehouse and is very spacious. It is very nondescript on the outside, and I am sure some people have passed by it unknowingly. There is a small parking lot right in front of the building and ample street parking in the vicinity. Also, the CUA/Brookland metro stop is about a block away. When you get there for class, hit the buzzer to get in, then enter the pilates oasis and enjoy!

But she stared for a few more beats from behind the glass, our faces a two feet apart, looked me up and down, and then reluctantly opened the door and said "YOU are looking for the hardware store. It's 'OVER THERE' ..... there's a *SIGN*" and in a passive aggressive tone that was really unnecessary gestured toward a big sign on the door that directed people looking for Ace Hardware to go nextdoor. I said "nope, I'm actually looking to learn about Pilates," but it was such a turn off that I turned and left. I assure you, lady, I can read the sign. And your judgments about who you think and perceive to be a potential customer was very disrespectful. It says a lot about the biases and prejudices you don't mask very well. Good luck!

Dan has…read morecreated such a beautiful, light-filled space that's equipped with pretty much any tool or equipment you might need to bring any idea to life. The classes themselves are fantastic - you'll learn by doing, but also by watching an expert demonstrate for you, and getting as much help as you may need throughout. It's a good balance: you'll build your skill set and learn the practicalities of metalsmithing, but also learn to understand your own creative vision, which you can work on during open studio hours. The vibe is really chill (Dan plays great music!), all the teachers are kind and helpful and supportive, your fellow students are all interesting and fun, and overall this is the kind of space where you feel like you're able to make mistakes and still learn and grow from them. If you've ever wanted to learn the true craft of metalsmithing to make fine jewelry, this is the place to do it.
