30-minute workout got my day started off right. Great instructor with sick sounds and lights. Definitely worth it.

Omg, this place is the best, but I have to say I've taken Oliver, Tamra and Katie's classes and they're the bomb.

Trey seemed very experienced and knowledgeable as he was hitting all his counts ... to a LIVE DJ!!! As someone who has instructed spin, this can be very difficult when you don't know what the DJ will play, so the fact that Trey took everything in stride and kept us having fun and sweating was amazing! Not to mention he was very helpful for bike setup for those who needed the help. Speaking of help, I accidentally put my stuff into a locker in the women's restroom without realizing how to lock it/open it and so I went to the front to ask for help. Tiana gladly said she would help me, but I differed until after class-- where I met Taylor who was off duty and in Trey's class, but graciously helped me get into the locker. I really appreciate her helping me because she could have easily just instructed me to go to someone currently working, so that really stood out for great service. The overall vibes of this gym were very aesthetically pleasing.. it's a very Instagram-able gym but the people I encountered here made it a great experience. Thank you again to Trey, Taylor and Tiana for making my first time at JR so great!! Next time I come back, I want to take Taylor's class in addition to Trey's as I've heard Taylor's is a great workout as well! Cheers!

The gym is great, but the woman at the front desk is not. She lacks any customer service skills…read more She is introverted, did not say hello or welcome us to do a tour, barely communicated and was extremely soft spoken. Having worked in the fitness industry and run a studio, this is a liability, and likely a reason a memberwould cancel a day after signing up.

I was so eager to go that I woke up early and got ready thinking it was at 8:30, but woops -checked my calendar on the way out and saw it was 9:30. Luckily for me, I had selected Kiersten's class, the owner! I have been to Barre Code in Omaha and Austin previously, and have been impressed with how good of a workout I get in a 50 minute class. This studio was clean and inviting. Kiersten greeted me and we chatted about barre. I mentioned my lower back issues. With yelp check-in, I got a free friendly towel which helped me manage my dripping...glow (women glow, not sweat!) during class. The studio had two mirrored walls and Kiersten pointed out this coveted corner spot with mirrors on both sides so I could watch my posture during class. The prop we used was the resistance band with handles (I am sure there is a technical term). I never imagined using this for an entire workout, but we did and we used it well! We used it during legs, arms, and core work which was really fun. I learned a really cool way to do crunches using it, and I have one at home to try it! The class had really great music, and Kiersten's energy kept me motivated. She also came by to check on my back during class, which I really appreciated given how fast-paced the class can be. I felt very energized after the class and will definitely come back when I get back to Dallas! I also bought a really cute tank that reads "See you at the barre." ...and you will see me there soon, I hope!

So in my quest to get to know more about Crossfit I went by mistake to Big Bricks, just realizing after walking to mega fit, ultra upbeat Glen that he was a personal trainer and not a Crossfir coach. Even with the initial confusion, he accepted my companion and myself for an hour of workout at his gym, located in the same building as the New School of Architecture. Glen has an extensive background in posture improvement and workouts that fit your medical needs. He tailors the workout for you and personal training sessions are around $40/hour/person if you are in a party of 2. I like the personal approach and the possibilities of how can you shape your body. As per the gym, is like one of those 'boutique hotels': petite but with everything, in a vintage building and with excellent views to the Coronado bridge and central library dime.

Ok so I am biased because I have worked out with Glenn around 3 1/2 years and we're good…read morefriends...but when we started working out, we didn't know each other and at the end of the day, he has gotten me into the best shape of my life. Do you want somene who will yell and belittle you into training hard, only to go home and wish and pray that somehow a bus "accidentally" hit your personal trainer? Do you want a trainer that calls you all the time to see what you are eating like a prison guard constantly searching you for contraband? Do you want to work out someone who cancels without notice, improperly bills you or says you are going to have 1-on-1 sessions only to invite several d-bags they met at Intervention to join in? Well, if you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, don't call Big Bricks. Glenn is on time, treats you like an adult, doesnt yell and scream, and if you want to work out in a class - he'll give you a class, but if you want a solo session (and he has the time available), you will get a solo session. Again, no trainer, and I mean nooooooo trainer will get you to be in shape if you don't want to, so don't expect just to workout an hour a week and watch the pounds melt off. But what Glenn does is he gives you the tools to work out correctly, talks to you about what you should be doing on your own (food/workouts) and doesn't blow smoke up your ass about imaginary results just to keep you coming back for more. As I said, I've known Glenn and have worked out with him since 2008 and it wasn't until mid last year when I finally decided to do workouts outside my comfort zone (comfort zone = treadmill for 45 min and weights; not comfort zone = workouts that made me sweat like a whore in church) that I saw amazing results and hopefully will continue to.
