I rarely leave reviews for places, but I had an exceptional experience and want others to be able to have the same experience. I went in with my family to buy a helmet for my son and went up to ask "the guy at the counter" if the fit was right. He took a look and shared his insight that it looked a little big, but the other cheek pads could help. He walked back with us and spent time walking us through the helmet and adjusted the pads to get the right fit. He stayed with us and did an amazing job working to connect with my kids (about martial arts, and why protective gear makes a lot of sense when riding). We were then past the time they were closed and he kept answering my questions, helping in a number of different areas. As we were wrapping up, I asked his name and he shared it is Kurt and that he was the owner of the shop and was very complimentary of my family. I would strongly NOT recommend this shop - mechanic in the back was snappy, and arrogant. After asking a question I didn't know the answer to he became visibly irritated and was ridiculously unwelcoming and short in response. One of the best purchase experiences ever getting our son his birthday bike today. First they had THE bike. Norco- at a great price point for a 12 year old. I'm very impressed with the quality. Then Paxton asked me for new grips and I said no you're getting a new bike. I went out for a phone call and they asked Paxton to grab those grips and threw them in for free. Spent time adjusting the bike for him and explaining the key features, what to maintain and lastly ALL adjustments included for a year. I'd purchased my Yuba Spicy Curry from a different shop a few months before Discovery started carrying them, but when I had a warranty issue, Discovery and Disco Kurt were awesome in helping me get it taken care of. These guys were super helpful, chill and definitely not snobby like the other bike stores we went to in the area. My boyfriend and I came to Hood River to visit for the weekend and we wanted to rent bikes for a few hours to ride the twin tunnels trail. We went to several other places that were renting at $75 for the day or $50 for half a day...Still too pricey. Also it seemed that they weren't interested in helping us since we weren't locals and just wanted to rent. Randomly happened upon Discover while walking downtown. So glad we did! We rented bikes for the entire day with helmets, and bike locks, for $35. The bikes were great. Much more reasonable in price, and also they were all very nice and even recommended the best breweries in town after our ride. If you want a quick, welcoming, helpful and cheaper option to rent great bikes, then definitely come here for your outdoor activities during your stay in Hood River. read more

We rented two electric bikes and the staff was excellent. We rode out on the tunnel trailhead and it was amazing. Highly recommend it. We even had a flat tire and they delivered another bike super quick so we could continue our adventure. I would go again if we're in the area. read more

These people really know their bikes and are able to convey their knowledge to a complete bike newbie like me...it had been almost ten years since I had last even thought about riding a bike. Anyway, while in Hood River, we decided to ride bikes along the Columbia River Gorge and Discover Bicycles was able to set me up with a top end road bike and even teach me the basics of how it differs from the mountain bike I used to ride around when I was 15. Rent bikes from this shop! This review is for rentals only. I rented bikes for my family of 5. We received good quality hybrids, which were perfectly suited to our needs. They sized each person individually for their bike, provided nice helmets and two combination locks. The tire pressure was checked, chains were lubed and we were good to go. The price also was quite reasonable - $40 per bike per 24 hours, plus a generous grace period at the end. That gave us use of the bikes for nearly two full days without having to worry about time expiring. Shop personnel were pleasant and easy to work with. Lots of smiles all around. I highly recommend this shop for your rental needs in the Hood River area. read more

The Bikes were in terrible shape - out of 10 bikes one had a flat tire one block away and it was due to a leak in the valve stem. The 2nd bike had a pedal fall off 3/4 of the way of a 6 mile ride. When I asked for some compensation they said they wouldn't charge us for the repair and it fell off while pedaling -Don't waste your money here read more

I'll try not to rant...but I'm just pi***d off! I recently met up with friends to do some biking in the Hood River area. I had just converted my mountain bike from a 3x9 to a 1x10 to eliminate weight and save on complications. I had to remove the rear disk brake and did not have time to re-install before I left. I picked up a bleed kit and new brake pads at another bike shop pre-Hood River and was going to do the work once I got to camp. However, the day when I wanted to do the work it was raining and I did not want to attempt out in the elements. So, I went to Discover Bicycles. Met with a mechanic fella who said they could do the brake installation in the next day or so. I showed him my gear conversion and explained was having trouble with the derailleur shifting into the larger 42T gear I added to the gear cluster. The 42T sprocket came with an extra long B screw that was supposed to provide the additional derailleur clearance. The trouble was that I had to add a shim (a Dime) between the B screw and the stop. He said that the B screw needed to be reversed in the cage and then it should work fine. Okay, let's do it I said. The next day we were leaving Hood River for Bend to do the mountain biking. Rear brake seemed to be working fine, But, when I went to test the shifting, the derailleur jammed into the gear cluster and bent the derailleur and broke four spokes on the back wheel. At that point the bike was toast. I checked the bike and noticed that the B screw wasn't reversed and in fact was adjusted only half way which did not allow enough cage clearance to fit under the larger 42T sprocket. Thus, the cage jam when I was pedaling and shifting into the upper sprocket. Made a call and the owner called me back. He spent the next twenty minutes telling me that it was my fault and that they are not responsible. Let's see, he told me I'm too large (190 pounds really!!), I did the conversion myself, the components might be mismatched, etc... So, even though they are a professional bike shop, and charged me to adjust my bike, it's not their fault...DO NOT GO TO THIS BIKE SHOP!!!. read more

On my second visit, for a repair to my cyclocross road bike, Curt was great at assessing how long the repair would take (adjusting my front derailleur), the conversation we had about the fix gave me confidence in his expertise, and the cost of the fix was reasonable. Overall, not a great experience. We went to rent 4 bikes to ride some local trails. Full suspension bikes are in moderate shape and the employees are complete stoners. After several complications in the process, we ended up heading a block over to Hood River Bicycles, which opened fairly recently. THIS STORE IS A RIP OFF. I took two bikes to get one converted to tubeless and one filled with slime to prevent punctures as we were heading to Mexico for the winter and ride in the desert. I gave the mechanic the bikes on Oct 9 and was promised them the next day The next day the store was closed and could not get the bikes until mid afternoon on Oct 11. The tubeless job was a failure so he had to put slime in the tires while I waited and then he charged me $350.00 for the work. I could have done the job myself and gone riding in a couple of hours and the cost of the slime. read more

I recently entered with a request for help with ordering or buying a very specific tire for my recumbent. I was not satisfied with my experience and was forced to not shop locally and go to the evil Amazon just to get the job done. I have 20 years of customer service experience and have dealt with many different bicycle shops for my bike all across the country, and the right answer, which is I don't know but we will find out , let me get back to you was not given. In fact, I was told to drive to Portland, I was told I was out of luck, I was told we think this will fit, (it did not). I understand that my bike is a rarity, but I knew what I wanted, just not the specifics, my bike has over 4000 miles on it, I have gotten better service in a random bicycle shop in Kansas. I came to you because I see you specialize in road bikes. I needed a tire badly. I feel I wasn't taken seriously, that customer service was lacking, and by one of your employees condescended to. I was visiting the area last weekend and got a bad sidewall cut on my road tubeless tire. This shop had the proper tire and was prepared to install a new one *just before* their closing time but I forgot my credit card. They kindly offered a loaner front wheel so that I could ride early the next morning. The next day I picked up the wheel - very professionally installed including sanding down the mark on the rim surface made by the object I hit. The shop also has an excellent selection of bikes - road and mountain. Definitely recommend. read more
