Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, FUNNY and they remember you/your selections/your preferred wines. Nice little rewards program too, so every now and then you get $5 bucks off. They also now deliver which makes it almost too convenient :) and their tastings are fun. Great small business to support.

Consider that a disclaimer that I suspect your mileage may vary with this particular store. This store has a small collection that gravitates to the $15 bottle of wine, if I may, which could be nice in and of itself. That's the right range for a quick bottle to go with dinner, but this being New York, you can't get wine in the grocery stores, so you have to remember to make a special trip. Unless you're shopping at the Co-op next door, I don't think this has quite enough of a selection or incredible bargains to make it a "destination" wine store. The California stock is heavy on the usual suspects from Napa and Sonoma counties; they had very few from the less well-known but significantly better Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties, and the staffer who was helping me didn't seem very aware about those vineyards. There were not a lot of South American or Aussie choices, which IMHO have produced some of the tastiest "bargain" wines in the $10-$20 range in recent years. The French selections are heavy on heritage vineyards, and in terms of value or specialness, I wasn't really sent by what was there. The Italians I thought were a poor lot. The grape selection is also very conservative - heavy on the merlots and chiantis and chardonnays, fewer choices in the cab francs and montepulcianos and pinot gris, if I can use that as a short hand for where I'm coming from in terms of taste. They had some decent syrahs, but nothing in what I'd call "full throat" labels. I obviously haven't tried every bottle in the joint, so take it fwiw this is just based on the selections I've had before. I will say of the half dozen bottles I took home, letting the staffer make suggestions, we haven't really had more than one bottle that seemed like it was a good wine at the price point. I give the store plenty of karmic credit, though, for having staff eager to help and coming out from behind the counter to try to answer my questions, and for that reason I'll come back a few more times while I comparison shop the weird world of New York wine sales and see if I can get into the "top shelves" here, as it were. I didn't look at the liquor in too much detail, as we don't drink a lot, but it seemed like a fairly thin selection. We have a couple of weirdo liquers (the two kinds of chartreuse) we drink on special occasions, that they didnt have, and the single malt scots whiskey selection was unremarkable. It's a local store, I appreciated their efforts, so as I said it's worth giving an extra shot to. Wine shopping is unusually an individual thing so the three-star rating is purely personal.

Now this is a legit craft beer location. I was shocked that all the macro pallets are gone and now everything is mostly craft six packs. They don't have quite the varied selection that Oliver's or Westmere has, but for such a tiny location it's pretty good. What sucks is they don't let you mix a six pack. That costs them a Star right there. Hell, even price chopper offers this now! Also, what's up with all the meth pipes? The entire 20 foot counter has all these cutesy glass pipes encased. Clearly these are for weed or meth or god forbid crack. WTF?! I find it difficult to believe this neighborhood has that many drug users. Another complaint is that the aisles are cramped and the shelves go all the way to the ceiling so it's kinda claustrophobic in there. makes me think kids are probably shoplifting here constantly. Hope they have good security but I didn't see any cameras or mirrors. All in all this is a decent beer store considering how small it is. It's one of those stores that'll work in a pinch, but would never be your first choice.

Holiday Liquors offers the best possible advantages of an owner operated local business: friendly,…read morehonest service, quality wines and liquor, great prices, and best of all, frank and wonderful recommendations from the proprietor himself--and that I find is so often a necessary service for most of us non-connoisseurs. He is passionate about helping his customers save money, and frequently steers you away from over-priced famous brands in favor of better tasting, lesser known offerings. He almost always takes a dollar or two off every bottle for his regular customers. The only drawback here (and the reason I rate it a 4 rather than 5) is that the small size of the store limits the quantity of merchandise, and occasionally one cannot find a specific product. However, the proprietor cheerfully makes special orders without any hesitation--I really liked a French Bordeaux wine I tried in a restaurant, asked about it, and he immediately ordered me a case, gave me a discounted price, and started selling this wine as part of his regular offerings. This is a great little liquor store, and my wife and I have gone back there for more than a decade. Strongly recommended.

In my procrastination ways, I didn't have time to special order a full sized bottle, and Englebardt's was out of stock - but they did have mini bottles of the vodka available which ended up made a great option for the gift basket we were building. Though he had plenty of unboxed bottles in the front of the store, the owner went into the back to find me an unopened, undamaged box of the minis to make a nice visual impact in the gift. The extra attention to detail went above and beyond for me; I've visited Englebardt's a few times since when picking up bottles for my own stock or hosting gifts, and will continue to visit when shopping in Schenectady in the future.
