Dino was incredible, flawless service from start to finish. I ordered my first ball online as a recommendation from a friend and needed to have it drilled. As a person who has never owned a ball before, you can imagine how confusing it is especially in NYC of all places. He recommended Dino to drill it to my hand, so we took a trip up to his shop. Dino fitted my hand to my ball based on how I've been bowling with the house balls at my local alley. He took an hour to drill it and when I say this thing is perfect, it's perfect. I've never had an easier time hitting the pocket and having comfort when I throw. He even recommended where I shift over based on how I roll and he was right. From the moment I walked in, I was treated with respect -- he shook my hand, welcomed me in, and took the time to really help me, not just sell me a ball. He gave me a ton of great advice about grip, explained things in a way that made sense for a beginner, and even shared recommendations for great bowling alleys to practice and improve. What stood out most was how careful and professional he was with fitting my ball -- he measured my hand twice, rechecked everything to make sure it was right, and made adjustments until the fit was perfect. A decent bowling pro shop inside Astoria bowling joint that's smaller inside then a elevator but has all the bowling stuff you need and if you need your ball drilled or redrilled , they offer that service at a reasonable price . I stopped by to get my ball redrilled and clean so I can get a better gripe when bowling and in 2 hours I was able to get my ball back and it fits like a glove .Bowling balls , shoes , accessories, etc, may cost you a little bit more here but not too many sports stores are around anymore and it's ok to support small local businesses in the area . 4 stars on my yelp meter . read more

After checking out all the reviews on yelp and Google I decided to check out Dino's to buy a bowling ball for my wife's birthday and I have to say Dino was great he enlightened us all about bowling balls. We did not know there were different types of bowling balls. He was extremely helpful in helping my wife in choosing her ball, sizing her for the holes and explaining the different hole grips for her and what would be best to get the best performance. He even gave her a quick lesson on how to properly bowl. I highly recommend going to Dino's he also has ball bags which we bought one for her ball and all types of gear you may want or need. Dino's is not a very large pro shop space but Dino makes up for lack of space with great service and knowledge. I know I'm going to go back for all my gear at Dino's. read more

Called in to ask about specials and he told me there were three balls on sale for a great price. Came in and had a perfectly fitting ball 30 minutes later. I am a new bowler. I suck. Well, I used to suck. I used a Hammer 15lb. beginner ball that (apparently) had the holes too far apart for me. It was nearly impossible for me to throw the ball and i'm a big dude. Dino told me that the ball i was using was drilled w/the finger holes too far apart. New ball, new drilling, fingers closer. I won a bowling ball raffle and needed to find a pro shop to have it drilled. Unfortunately there are not many Bowling Pro Shops in NYC. I found Dino's on Yelp and it was rated quite high. Dino was very friendly and professional. Having never drilled a ball for me before he took the necessary steps to properly measure my hand not just for span but for the finger pitches as well. As well he observed my bowling style and measured my positive axis point from throwing a ball I already had. He could have easily just measured everything on an existing ball of mine and duplicated those specs on my new one, but he took the extra time to do it thoroughly. After his own measurements and asking me about how I felt about the fit of my existing ball, he explained that he felt my span and finger pitches needed to change. The thoroughness of his examination of the mechanics of my hand gave me confidence that his assessment was correct, and I agreed with him to make the changes. Also I asked him about an interchangeable thumb product. He didn't try to sell one to me before I asked him about it. After I did he explained he had two different brands of interchangeable thumb systems. Gave me the pros and cons of each. The price difference between the two was negligible, and I made my choice based on his information. I never felt pressured to choose one over the other. He then told me to wait about 30 minutes and the ball would be ready. And it was. And the way this ball fit compared to ones I already had was night and day. It felt more natural in my hand, was easier to hold without squeezing tightly, and came off my hand much cleaner than my other balls had. The actual changes were not very drastic, maybe an 1/8" more span and a degree or two of pitch away in the fingers. But it made all the difference. I was so happy with it, I left my older ball with him to plug and adjust to the new fitting specs he came up with. But again he didn't pressure me to do it. I came back a couple of days later and picked it up, and if I had a blindfold on, I wouldn't be able to tell you which ball I was holding. All told between measuring the new ball, plugging the old ball, drilling both, installing finger grips in both, the interchangeable thumb system in both, and drilling and final fitting of the removeable part of the thumb was $125. I felt that was an extremely fair price for the work done. The shop itself is on the smaller side. But he did have product in stock from multiple manufacturers. If you're at all serious about bowling or thinking about getting to that point you'll undoubtedly need to find yourself at a "pro shop" at some point. Even if you're the savviest of online shoppers who buys all the bowling equipment you need online you'll still need to seek out a pro shop to get your bowling ball drilled. What's surprisingly rare in a city with 8.5 million people is the shortage of such shops and an even more shortage of reviews for those places. Of course nearly all bowling alley's have them but the fancy club-like bowling alleys or speakeasy type of hipster bowling alleys that dot this city will often forgo this type of shop as the clientele just doesn't look for that type of service. Although Dino's is located inside of Astoria Bowl, it's a separate business altogether. Of all the pro shops I've come across Dino's is perhaps the smallest. From what I could see, Dino doesn't seem to carry any shoes or bags and their display & available stock of balls and accessories was quite limited. Luckily I only came here to get a ball drilled and the advice that would come with that service. The owner Dino was incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable. As drilling a bowling ball is significantly more involved in just making three holes that properly fit your fingers it's crucial to have someone like Dino to ask all the right questions in order to get the proper layout and positioning of those holes in your particular ball in order to suit the bowler. As I'm a relatively newbie with this type of stuff it was important to have someone I could ask questions before having the ball drilled. One of the most important things a pro shop owner needs to know in order to properly drill a ball is called the bowlers P.A.P. Unfortunately as Dino's is a separate business from Astoria Bowl he couldn't simply just bring me to a lane and have me throw another ball to determine what my P.A.P was but fortunately for him I A) Did not have another ball with me in order to make that throw and B) Have not yet developed a proper throwing technique in order to have made that determination possible anyway. Dino did however know enough to ask me if I knew what my P.A.P was so that he could take that into consideration. In the end he and I made the choice to drill the most average/versatile layout for the ball. I was expecting to have to drop the ball off and come back a number of days later but to my surprise Dino told me to come back in about 30 minutes. A drink at the alley's bar later I came back and it was done. We checked the fit, determined it was a bit too tight so he tweaked it until it was just right. He had me just roll the ball a few feet on the carpet outside his shop and payed attention to how it came off my hand so he could make sure it was comfortable and fit correctly before I left. I wished he could have brought me to a lane to have me throw a few balls instead but like I said this is technically a separate business so I have my doubts about how possible that would have been. He also let me know that once I do get around to playing with it, if I need any adjustments to not hesitate to come back and get those done (presumably at no extra cost). The final cost for the drilling (with inserts) was about $55 which is pretty standard and a fair price for that type of service. I'm not sure if/when I should ever need Dino's service again in the near future but I'm very glad I came and saw him and would recommend him to anyone else in my position (and/or if you just want advice on what type of ball to purchase to up your game). read more

Dino is a very knowledgeable driller and also an accomplished bowler. Together, that enables him to make strong recommendations about ball layouts. He has everything needed in the shop to make good measurements and to execute them in a drilling. When I first started out, Dino was at 34th Lanes. I asked for a certain layout, and he was happy to oblige. As I learned more, I asked more questions, and he answered them. Along the way, he always took the time to watch me throw a few balls and he helped me find and consider PAP, rev rate, speed, tilt, lane conditions, etc. He is also quite good with beginner bowlers, as he tries to be a positive ambassador for the sport.
