The Canarsie Blinks gym definitely deserves better…read more It's one of the few gyms in the area with a significant number of Black women, which is important because cardio equipment, in particular, is lacking and outdated compared to gyms in other neighborhoods, even ones just miles away. For example, the Blink Fitness at 2166 Nostrand Ave, near the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Junction Road, is much better than this location. Additionally, the Blink Fitness at 81 E 98th St in Brownsville offers a better experience with updated equipment and a more accommodating atmosphere. The equipment at this Canarsie location, on the other hand, feels worn out--loose, light, and ineffective. Some of the treadmills and step climbers are either broken or overcrowded, and there just aren't enough machines to meet the demand. This gym serves a lot of Black women in a predominantly Black neighborhood who depend on reliable cardio equipment, but I've noticed many of them are forced to go elsewhere. It's frustrating because a good gym location should serve the people in the community well, and this one doesn't seem to. I also had a strange experience in the locker room: there was a guy with a leaf blower drying the floor, and when I walked past, he yelled at me for walking on the wet floor. This was really off-putting. I understand he wanted the floor dry, but using a leaf blower seems like an ineffective and unprofessional method for a gym. I've never seen anyone use a leaf blower in a gym, and as someone who worked as a custodian before, I can tell that a mop or towel would be much more effective. It just added to the overall sense that this location isn't up to par. On a positive note, the lifting equipment is fine if you're into weight training, and the staff downstairs is friendly. If you're looking for something quick to drink, there's a dollar store nearby that sells energy drinks and water. I also like the smoothie and bowl shop across the street. It's frustrating because, with all the great supporting stores around, there's no reason why the equipment here can't be updated to better serve the community.

I think August and Leroy should be demoted/transferred they don't know how to address strangers that they don't know with respect and dignity. I keep speaking up for myself and people are treating me like I'm not the customer that's being treated unfairly. The staff there are respectful and courteous. Now the way that I am built represents my competitive background. I have gained and loss weight over the years. I try my best to stay in shape and have recently loss at least two dress sizes. The management recently brought on a new staff member who is so obnoxious, she saw me once and she just openly started to criticize me with the other trainers. that one of the trainers asked her openly, "why are you talking this way? "Hello, I am not deaf, I heard what you said." "Who does she think she is, a bodybuilder? BTW: I am and it's none of your concern. You are not paying for my membership or anything that I do. She appears to be extremely uncomfortable with my presence, either she is intimidated or jealous. She continues to make disparaging remarks whenever she sees me, and I am shocked that the management team would put someone with this level of unprofessionalism to represent their establishment. Dear, I understand you'll never be able to train me, but you don't have to make yourself so obvious nor do you need to present yourself as a street thug. Your behavior scares me, I feel that I might have to call the police on you if you keep up the harassments.

Also, he is fair in his pricing model and operates with integrity. I have trained off and on for 5-6 years at this point and each time I return, there is no judgment. Say it with me: working out is a lifestyle and NOT a fad. Note that the program works when you do, just like anything else in this thing called life. One key to remember is that your diet is 85%. Again, diet is 85% of this and you will never outperform a bad one. Every personal trainer isn't for every single trainee and that is okay. If you want an Equinox experience, you must pay that cost! Chatter aside, you cannot discount the brilliant personal training and nutrition program that Skip has built which focuses on a few core things: water intake, macronutrients, plus an abbreviated training schedule. Just do it.

Sharing mine so you can make an informed decision. I DM'd for more info on the program because I'm not gonna spend hundreds for something that's not sustainable for me. Skip was rude, dismissive, and refused to provide info about what kind of nutrition and exercise is part of his program. That's basic customer service. Go to any website and you get at least a FAQ overview. I provided 1 screenshot for context on the way he speaks to people, but there are many more examples. Also check out the not recommended reviews. There are Black health/fitness coaches out there that value and respect their potential clients. Skip is unfortunately not one of them. Do not recommend.
