    Taro boba milk tea
    Jessie W.

I don't recall ever rating a bbt place 1 star, but here we are. Completely unacceptable experience and not representative at all of Ding Tea stores elsewhere. 1) You order at a table set up outside the store (to block entry into the store) and communicate via speakerphone with the server inside. Far too heavy-handed considering most restaurants are reopening for dine-in! Also there's 0 shade for us customers lining up outside. 2) The server was simply a mess. A customer in front of us returned with her wrongly-made drink just as I realized mine was missing the pearls I had asked for. 3) The ads outside the door are SO misleading. The taro milk tea I got looked fabulous but came with literally non-existent slivers of taro-flavoured mush. 4) Absolute worst in terms of taste -- agreed upon by both myself and my husband (who got the blueberry milk tea). And we've had a LOT of different bbt.

Bubble Tea Galore! :) Cost is about $5.60 for the large size with topping.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE Ding Tea Victoria is reminiscent of its sister location in Vancouver East - a place dedicated to Taiwanese BBT. Apart from Le Tea in Hillside Centre, Ding Tea Victoria may be your only spot for BBT in the area without going further to downtown - and that's not necessarily a bad thing! === 2. FOOD The prices are about right (which I'm sure works for the University / school crowds) and the tastes were decent for the most part. We ordered a number of drinks for the group: - Signature Milk Tea ($4.90 large + $0.50 per topping) - Hokkaido Milk Team ($5.10 large + $0.50 per topping) - worth a try over the signature! - Passionfruit Green Tea ($5.10 large + $0.50 per topping) - Pineapple Green Tea ($5.10 large + $0.50 per topping) - Taro Milk Tea ($5.10 large + $0.50 per topping) - this one was powdered (?) and not as good as the others. === 3. SERVICE & ENVIRONMENT For takeout, the service was alright - the lady made some recommendations, I ordered, went next door to order Chinese food, and all of the drinks were done! The place was maybe half full / busy at the time - it's contemporary-looking like it's Vancouver East location. Here, the tables are smaller and so I hope your group is about 2 in size. Wheelchairs and strollers fit, but the small space between tables may be a challenge. Parking is not an issue with the shopping complex lot out front.

Mango smoothie and matcha red bean slush with grass jelly

I read another complaint on Google reviews about ordering a "smoothie" and getting a slush so I thought I'd help clarify here. The "smoothie" on the menu is actually a slush by normal standards. If you order a mango or passionfruit "smoothie", it's going to have a slurpee-like texture, but they call it a "smoothie", and they don't understand what you mean by "slush". Today's conversation went like: Me: "Can I get half ice on the slush?" Staff: "We don't have slush. We can't adjust ice level on the smoothie." Me: "The smoothie is full of ice, it's really a slush, but it doesn't matter what you call it. Okay." Then I tried to order half sweet for the matcha smoothie, but that wasn't allowed either. Okay. I ended up ordering the Taro green tea drink, and it's kind of terrible. Tasted like plain milk mixed with green tea. The amount of taro is very small and not well blended at all so it sits at the bottom. I would avoid the taro drinks like another reviewer indicated below. The mango, passionfruit, and matcha red bean smoothies are quite good though. We will be back.

Went in today to get the first bubble tea that I've had in almost 5 years. I was extremely happy with this spot as my reintroduction into the boba lifestyle. Although part of a chain, this location is one of only two Ding Teas in Canada (with the other being all the way over in Ontario). My friend was taking me on a boba-tasting adventure and thought that this would be a good starting point. We got their most popular tea, the Bubble Milk Tea, which was extremely good! It was quite a calm flavour, as it was actually in tea! I see very strong flavours in boba quite often so I'm not exactly sure what the norm is, or if you typically see both sweet and regular most places you go but I thought it was great that they had both. It's quite inexpensive to get a regular or large bubble tea here and I found it to be very tasty and refreshing. Plus, the location simply can't be beaten for me, since I spend so much time at the university and the surrounding area!

I ordered a small drink here and specifically asked for no ice. Instead, they decide to fill more than half my cup with ice. Paid $5.30 for a mediocre drink that was 80% ice. Never coming back

    Absolutely terrible

Horrible, it was so thin and had all those strange stuff on the bottom. And we ordered a taro tea, that's the easiest tea any place can make if you offer bubble tea. My kids left it and didn't want it.

Nothing fancy, but reliable with late hours and a big selection. My personal favorite is a cantaloupe green tea with boba.

It may be a hidden gem tucked away in Gordon Head! === 2. FOOD For this takeout order we tried... Shrimp Swirl Egg on Rice: As you can see in the pic, there's not a lot of swirl egg in there, but over the dish was pretty good without being too salty. Szechuan Green Beans: They were decent; good flavour, and in my (subjective) opinion, not too spicy. === 3. SERVICE It seems like one can converse in English or Chinese; the staff certainly spoke Chinese to each other even if most of the patrons were non-Chinese. They all wear masks - in a respectful manner per the Chinese culture. Service was reasonably quick. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Was this a western diner-style family restaurant before? I'm not sure, but it doesn't fit the typical Chinese restaurant stereotype. Dark interior with the old-school lights over the tables suggest it was perhaps an ABC Country restaurant or some other diner-ish establishment before. Regardless, those with wheelchairs and baby strollers can fit in just fine and parking is somewhat plentiful outside in the shopping complex lot.

We will definitely go back.

Great customer service, Delicious desserts [Victoria BC]…read more I really wanted to try their Crepe Cake but was told that they sold out and won't get them again the following week. Not sure what ingredients they were waiting shipment for. So I chose a Japanese Soufflé Cheesecake next... same thing! Bummer. So hopefully they have the Egg Bubble Waffle and they did! Third time's a charm. We actually came here twice for dessert. The first time we had the Tiramisu Egg Bubble Waffle and then we came back again the next day and had the Chocolate Egg Bubble Waffle. They both look similar. The owners, young couple, were always hard at work and friendly too, especially the husband. They have their small children in the restaurant with them. The desserts were delicious. Hubby and I shared one both times... it was massive. They also have a separate menu for soup, salad, apps... and sushi! They are in the historic Dominion Hotel in Victoria's Old Town (an impressive, 4-story brick building located at the southwest corner of Blanshard and Yates Streets). Interior is pretty too with the fancy chandelier lighting. We found metered street parking. Located across the Cineplex Odeon Victoria Cinemas in Downtown Victoria BC. VERDICT/VALUE With a menu from across a variety of Asian cultures, Tropical Island tries to everything to everyone and at least for this one takeout experience, it does - falling short only on portion size. === 2. FOOD Our order was takeout and so the portion sizes were small (see photos for scale of the smaller tin pans with chopsticks); however, the quality of the food was decent overall! Chicken Satay ($13) Four skewers come at this price with some sort of mild-ish spicy oil-based peanut sauce on the side. The chicken is relatively meaty and tender! Beef Vegetable Delight ($19) With lotus root, carrots, onions, celery, and broccoli on tap with thin slices of beef, this is a dish you'll enjoy with rice or another starch. Green Beans ($19) One of the recommended house dishes by the server; it was decent - no minced pork like that found in Chinese restaurants, but it does have red and green peppers and onions. === 3. SERVICE The server at the counter was good and professional, balancing myself, app-order delivery drivers, and dine-in guests. The staff here seemed to speak English and Manadarin. The food was prepared fairly quickly, tho this may be due to having only 4 tables of dine-in guests at the time of order. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's not a looker - it starts with narrow hallway with two small bench-type seats for those waiting at the counter, before opening into an older seating area. Wheelchairs and baby strollers should fit well enough once you get through the hallway. Parking is interesting - a few spots are located out front (watch out for one with a small Do Not Park sign on the wall) and there are a few more spots across the alleyway.

What's appealing here is that their Instagram advertises daily specials so you can get some dishes for a great discount (like 40% off). We tried the braised combo (pork ear, pork intestines, fish cake), Taiwanese egg wrap, braised pork sauce rice with deep fried pork chop, and yam taro mochi balls. The braised combo is pretty solid - I didn't really like the funkiness to the intestines (I generally enjoyed it in barbecue settings) but the fish cake was fantastic. I also liked the texture of the pork ears. The Taiwanese egg wrap was a bit tasteless, so I wouldn't recommend. Braised pork sauce rice is the lu ruo fan which is a large portion with seaweed, bean sprouts, and soup on the side. Pork chop was flavorful and juicy but not crispy batter, which is okay. Yam taro mochi balls were sweet and chewy. I don't like taro but I loved this dessert! Service is okay. They give a water jug for self pour but the water jug was of questionable cleanliness. The specials were not discounted so we called it out and we weren't told that we had to put the order with a server, not the QR code, so it was a strange interaction. They ended up honoring the discount. Also, they shut down ordering 1 min before 10:30pm - guess they didn't want more money as we wanted to order 1 more dish and they preemptively told the kitchen to close. Sure it's fine no big deal, it was a lot of food.
