I was informed that the underground service conductor issue was the responsibility of Xcel Energy, not the homeowner. I contacted Xcel Energy directly, and they inspected the issue and completed the necessary work within two days at no cost to me. Based on these facts, I believe I was asked to pay more than $2,000 for work that either was unnecessary or was the responsibility of the utility company rather than the homeowner. In my opinion, this was a serious attempt to charge me for work that I did not need to pay for. I strongly recommend that anyone receiving a costly estimate for service entrance or meter-related electrical work obtain a second opinion and contact their utility company before authorizing repairs. Yet, I told him I chose it from the "shower light" section of choices online at Home Depot. But Eric wanted to be sure, for safety purposes, that the light could tolerate a water setting. It had a symbol on the box which we both believed to indicate that, but he checked with Chris, his boss, to be sure that's what it meant. Chris approved it for installation. I appreciated his focus on safety and the installation did not take very long. I also appreciated that Eric was very personable and explained very clearly how this was a good choice for a shower light because it could be popped down a bit if there was a need to see above the light again, such as for another drain leak from above, as this situation had been. The cost may have been a bit more than if I paid someone else by the hour, but at least this cost by job included a trip fee and if it needed to take longer would not have cost extra. Because their estimate matched another company and I valued our past relationship, I chose Randy's. During their final visit, I asked for a quick quote to add an outlet onto a regular wall by pulling power straight up from an existing, parallel outlet below it. It is a very straightforward, 20-minute job. I have paid $150 for this exact service in the past, and a quick Google search confirmed the standard rate is around $250 to $300. Imagine my absolute shock when the technician quoted $724.85!! When he saw my stunned reaction, he said, "Let me see what I can do," tapped around on his screen, and lowered it to $608. He also quoted me roughly $500 just to hang two vanity lights that were already fully wired and just needed to be connected--another basic 20-minute task. My husband came home about 15 minutes later and was incensed. He asked the technician how he could possibly justify those numbers and firmly told him he was trying to take advantage of me. Once again, the technician said, "Let me see what I can do," pushed a few buttons on the iPad, and suddenly dropped the outlet price to $300ish--less than half of the original quote!! My husband pointed out the obvious: he was just arbitrarily making up numbers on the spot to see what he could get away with.
