The Anise

The Anise

A relatively new unlicensed outlet situated adjacent to two other Asian restaurants…read more It therefore needs to be good to survive and fortunately for us it is good, actually it is very good, and not just my opinion but also that of reviewers in the local newspaper. There is nothing wrong with the neighbouring competition, I've tried them all and they're good, even busier, yet I believe the Anise has the edge on quality and presentation. Service may be a bit slower but it is genuinely cooked to order rather than a "ping" and it's ready. The food and starters in particular are as good as it gets for the money. Excellent food, clean restaurant and genuinely friendly staff make it well worth a try in lieu of following the crowd. The only negative is the location of the toilets on the 2nd Floor and the council charging for evening parking in that area. Update That was my opinion in April. We have been back since and been generally pleased but yesterday things weren't as good as previous visits. As said above, service is slower than average but over an hour wait for the starters really is too long especially when there were only two tables occupied all evening. When they arrived the onion bhaji actually tasted older than the wait and the sheek kebab was too hot. The other two starters were fine. Presentation was very good. No problems with the main courses although I did have to ask for a few chillis to liven up my Madras. The garlic fried rice was excellent but the nan & chips were way overdone indeed burnt in places. Our young waiter was struggling with English but he was pleasant enough. So overall not bad but barely adequate and certainly not the endorsement I had previously bestowed. I noticed the chefs were not the "experienced" ones previously seen, could this be the problem? Will they return? It looses half a star but at 3.5 gets rounded up. Only three tables occupied during the time we were there on a Saturday night plus good competition right next door means Anise will have to up its game to survive.

Made a quick stop for dinner on our way to Liverpool. Easy access from M6 just after Birmingham…read more Delicious food and great service ! We enjoyed lamb briyani, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer (generous serving - side in photo), cheese and onion naan ! Several others were dining with friends and family so highly recommend for a relaxing evening or take out if you are looking for a good bite ! Very clean and modern inside

I do confess I never been to a restaurant in Walsall itself but i already heard good things about…read morethe Balti houses in the area. Pleck Balti was my first one and I didn't feel disappointed. As an unconditional fan of Indian food, the choice of dinner with friends last Friday couldn't be better! Pleck Balti is just about 15 minutes from where I live and it was particularly packed when we arrived. It wasn't difficult to find a table for five people either. Even we didn't book any table in advance. As a typical Balti place, it as possible to bring your own drink. The menu was quite impressive and it was a bit difficult to choose one single option. Loads of great options of curries and Naan breads and chef specialties. My starter was a delicious Tandoori King Prawn in a decent portion that opened the appetite for a gorgeous Bhuna as main. I never had tried that curry before and I thought a very mild one; something that made me believe I can handle more spicy than that! Cool! The staff and service were pretty efficient. We had a great night out in Pleck Balti and even being the last guests in the house, the whole service was spot on until the end. Not to mention that it is a pretty reasonable place. A tenner paid for the starter, main course and a can of coke. I just would enjoy a bit more of heating inside that place. It was a bit cold inside the place and with the winter coming I hope to have it in full blast next time I visit the restaurant.
