Jivan's is the bomb…read more I spent much of my college years partying in this horrible town and I never once thought to visit this place. Then one of my good friends in my later years promised me this would be a great place for a curry. So initial thoughts is it definitely looks outdated outside and in but surprisingly it is not all that uncomfortable with the old wooden decor. I will admit in around 20 visits here I have only ever order the one dish and that is the minced lamb curry with naan, it is that good! It is a family run restaurant and they are very awesome folk who work here. I have only ever been during the week so not sure what the weekend rush is like.

This is my favourite place for curry in Wolverhampton for a few reasons;…read more Very reasonable prices - I recently went with a pal, we had rice and curry each, a nan between us and a pint of indian lager each - it was under a tenner each! Great tasting curry and a good portion served in a balti dish. Their chicken tikka sizzler starter dish is great too (£8.00 but can serve 3/4). Take-away also available. Look on the W/ton council website for the environmental health scores on the doors and Jivans scores one of the highest (4 stars) in the town for excellent food standards and kitchen hygiene. Better score than places that charge twice as much! Its only a small place with formica tables, so its not the sort of place for a special meal, there are far more swankier places to visit - but for a quick curry in a hurry after a real ale session, or a curry before the theatre this place can't be beaten. Great food, good portions, great prices - my favourite place.

Edit- update 2013 new owners food not as good as it used to be!…read more Hi spice lovers! I have been going to the Midnight Balti for a couple of years now. First ever impression wasn't good as the place looks a bit rough from the outside haha. But when you go inside it is nice and clean, albiet small. The quality of the food is terrific especially for the price. I would say its the cheapest Indian Restaurant in the west midlands, or at least one of the cheapest. I doubt any could beat the prices they charge there. And for the quality of the food its a must visit place for sure. Its not the type of place to go for a romantic meal. Rather a casual curry, like grab some beers from the shop next door, take em in and just relax. Never had a bad meal there and i have sampled probably 70% of the menu! Staff are friendly also, no problems there So really if its just a really cheap but quality curry you are after, then this place is a must visit. Plus its important to say that i have been to most Indian restaurants in the west midlands area, such as ' The red fort cafe champagne spice time jivans cafe rickshaw the rickshaw dilshad mother india spice avenue bilash Plus many more i haven't listed, so i like to think i know what im talking about I hope this helps your decision to try this place out. I doubt you will be disappointed Enjoy

So after a little drive round Willenhall etc we stumbled on the unassuming Midnight around 8ish last Sat night. It was about three quarters full and we were seated straight away. There was a mix of customers on the night. The tables are very close so there are no private conversations and we did over hear a few expletives. There is nothing fancy in the decor but it is reassuringly clean and tidy. There is a decent choice on the menu with a few special dishes. There was a bit of a delay in taking our order and also in the arrival of our meals but it wasn't too bad. The poppadoms were nicely done and came with ample onion salad and dips. Just the one starter, a safe onion bhaji, a fraction dry but I may be being a bit picky. The sauce in both of our the main courses was different, it was good but slightly unusual and hard to describe; tasty, quite thick (almost gluey) sweetish sauce. The chicken tikka in both was very good and my Madras was certainly hot enough. Unfortunatley there wasn't much spinach in my wife's sag. No complaints with the fried rice, garlic & coriander nan or frozen chips. We hadn't room for a deserts so can't comment on them. Our young waiter didn't really know the menu but he and the staff were pleasant enough, perhaps could have been a little more engaging considering we were obviously first timers. So overall not bad at all and the bill was very reasonable, being helped by the Midnight not being licensed. Not quite Four Stars.

It is in a converted pub and we were surprised to be welcomed by someone obviously not from the Asian sub-continent. First impressions are very good and no surprises that it is has been done out in the now obligatory "contemporary" style. I am not a fan of purple & laminate but each to their own and I suppose there was a clue in the name. It is a big room, they've spent a lot of money on the refurb and it has been well done. My concern is that a big room needs to be relatively full to have an atmosphere but then it can be noisy as the sound reverberates around the hard surfaces. Mid week perhaps the opposite and it could be a little too quiet and lifeless? Typically the staff are very young & therefore inexperienced but all appeared smart, pleasant and eager to please. Our order was taken by a lady who seemed to be in charge. Popadoms were fine, served with three dips, one of which, a sort of bland apple sauce was new to me. The starters arrived before we had finished our popadoms. Fresh or micro? The onion bhaji was fine but the seekh kebabs, of which there were three, were a fraction too hot and lacked depth of flavour plus they didn't come with fried onions. The side salad was better than average, nicely presented incl olives. My main course was a bit disappointing, it was not as spicy as I was hoping for based on the waitress's suggestion. Although it was hot enough it was in a lighter, slightly creamy sauce. It was also plain cicken in lieu of the chicken tikka ordered. The wife's CT sag however was very tasty but a little salty, I pinched half of it and we both got up in the night to look for a glass of water - I suggest those with high blood pressure beware. Our side orders consisted of very nice fried pillau rice, a "damp" garlic & coriander nan and a large plate of pale cash & carry fries. For deserts there were a few choices from a hand written note, they haven't got their desert menu together yet. For a change we had a floater coffee but that too was a little weak. The bill duly arrived and I thougt it only fair to advise of the slight problem with the main course. She was apologetic and whilst she accepted my comments on the main course she seem to suggest that I may not know the difference between plain and tikka chicken - trust me, I do. Overall the evening for me was just adequate and a little pricey. I'm sure if we had gone straight for the main course and I had chosen a different dish it would well have been 4 Stars but we didn't hence the 3 Stars.
