Kid & dog friendly beach. This stretch of coast has changed dramatically in recent years. Perhaps due to Covid motivating more people outdoors, this sleepy stretch of coast is now bustling! Make sure to get here early (before 11am on weekends) or you will find yourself queued up along the main road through town, unable to pull a U-turn and waiting for cars to leave the parking lot before you creep forward. The cost of parking has fluctuated dramatically as well. What was once $8 day fee (standard for all Sonoma county parks) became $20 on the weekend and $10 on weekdays..... Pretty certain the owners of Dillon Beach Resort had their "hand slapped" because now the price has leveled back to $15/weekends and free before 9am. Like I said, get there early! Lovely stretch of coast on calm days, but the wind can definitely pick up and leave you chaffed by the sand blustering across the dunes! Dog friendly, which is great for your furry friends in need of socializing amidst the pandemic. Be mindful of picnic and games, as free roaming pooches are eager to sample unattended picnics or snag a frisbe mid throw ;) Overall, a great beach with convenient parking! read more

Every year I learn a little more about myself. This year, I learned that one of my favorite places to be is on a California beach in the winter. Some girlfriends and I rented a house nearby for the weekend. We had an amazing time and my favorite moment was when we hiked down to Dillon beach for a morning run. I felt like Jason Bourne in female form, as I logged the miles on the damp sand. We pretty much had the entire beach to ourselves, sprinkled with a couple of fisherman. I wrote a note in the sand, I soaked up the scenery, and I laid on a tall rock like a mermaid. This is what heaven must feel like. The town is sleepy and quiet. The streets are narrow. The houses are adorable. There's a small general store for your basic needs. Parking is $10 if you can't walk in. read more

First, I want to say I LOVE Dillon beach. I go there at least 3 times a week with my lab. Most dogs are well behaved and listen - even those occasional dogs(usually puppies) that don't listen and run up. You can usually tell the dogs intention. Today for the 1st time we were walking along the beach line and there were 2 unleashed pit bulls by the dunes. They made a mad dash for my dog, full speed while the 2 people were yelling at them to come back. I couldn't tell what their intentions were as I'm used to goofy, happy dogs that just want to make new friends. I grabbed my dog and stood between them and yelled. They stopped about 3 feet in front of us. They did finally return back to their owners. Again, I like all dogs and I do believe that most pits get a bad rap for a few BUT out of consideration, please keep your very strong athletic dog on a leash if they are not under voice control. read more

This is designed to be a dog-friendly beach. They are allowed off-leash, but when I checked with staff, that still means the dog needs to be "under the control of the owner". Such as coming when called, etc. I have an anxious dog in training and I'm trying to slowly expose her to different experiences. I also have an old blind and deaf dog that enjoys the smell of the ocean. They were both on a leash and dogs kept coming up at them. Of course. the anxious one would bark to protect the old one and needed a lot of reassurance. I'm pretty good at reading dog body language, and when a dog's hackles are up, the head is up, and the tail is stiff - that isn't a happy greeting. I asked an owner to please get her dog and she responded that if my dogs aren't friendly they shouldn't be there. Note - my dogs were on leash and hers was clearly not "under her control". After talking with a few people, they have witnessed some nasty dogfights at that beach and won't go back. As much as I like the area, I'm looking into other beaches that do require leashes just so it feels a bit safer to bring my dogs. read more

Tide pools, waves, beach, sand dunes, bathrooms, dogs off leash, it's got it all! This is NOT a So Cal beach with warm sun and smooth water. It's cold, windy, foggy much of the time, and not safe for extensive swimming due to riptides. Boogie boarding and wet suit surfing is about as far as you can go. It's fun seeing the dogs out running and owners are pretty good about cleaning up after them. We live climbing to the top of the dunes and looking out at the waves. The surrounding area is farmland so don't be surprised if your Airbnb has cows, deer, partridges and other animals hanging around. read more

Ah Dillon. You may be but a cow pasture with a dock and a beach, but you'll always be special to me. Right now I'm spending thanksgiving here with my family. As a kid, I was here every summer, either staying in a cabin, camper, or tent. Dillon WAS my childhood. We conquered the dune mountain. We watched a family friend catch a tiger shark in the surf. We learned how to tell male and female crabs apart from dad's marine biologist buddy. We learned to fly kites. We used to get good and fruities from the general store before they changed the damn recipe, thereby ruining them forever. I spent one trip in the back of my grandad's RV working on a school project about cavemen, trying my hardest not to get distracted by everyone else having fun outside. My brothers and I brought only our closest friends here for day trips, potlucks, vacation weekends, trusting them with the magic. Lately though, I've not been visiting as often. So it means a lot to me to be back. Dillon Beach is a solid day use beach that has a campground attached where you can park your shiz, sans hookups. There are honey pots, picnic tables, a scattering of janky bbqs, random hoses, and dumping stations. There are many cows. In my day, you could camp anywhere in the pasture, even away in the dunes. These days there are allotted spaces to protect the wetlands. Lawson's Landing is about a mile down the road from the campground (really it's a cow pasture) entrance, and offers a dock, bait shop, and a sturdy deck where you can drop your crab nets and set up your fishing poles. It now has a ton of additional camping spaces, too. There's a general store with a good stock of food, brews, liquor, and Dillon Swag, and tons of cabins for rent. Dillon is great. If you have dogs, it's even greater. Bikes? Golf carts? Flags that depict your heritage or perhaps latent racism? Dillon is just for you. Even with the allocated spaces, it still feels like you come rumbling in to stake a claim in the Dillon land rush, especially on a holiday. Reserve camping spaces and cabins early, especially for holidays/holiday weekends. Day use is $8. Don't knock it til you try it. If you have to have a shower like now, Doran Park down the road has coin op showers. read more

We only went here because the road to this beach is not very windy like some other beaches like Stinson. At this beach there was dog poop everywhere! We got it on our picnic blanket, shoes and touched it on accident thinking it was sand! Lovely beach. But I kept smelling dog poop! I smelled it so much I felt embarrassed and thought it was coming from me! Like o jeez did I not wipe well or did I not wipe my kids well? I was on a sniffing spree! My husband and son stepped on it on 2 separate occasions and no we don't go looking to dance in it! The dog owners must bury the poop in the sand. Well I just hope the poop karma gets them! Maybe it was because we went after Veterans Day but wow! Also, if you're going on a weekend forget smelling the fresh beach air because all you'll be smelling is smoke from the bbq pitts. We smelled strongly of smoke on our ride home. Our sandals smelled like dog poop. So there you have it! If you love stepping on dog poop on your way to the shore, love second guessing if it's sand or poop and hate fresh beach breeze then this is the place for you. Oh, by the way, the bathroom is just like a gas station bathroom with a bunch of sand thrown in for best possible beach goer experience. Imagine for a moment a bathroom impossible to clean because it's so horrific to even look at. Looks like the custodian gave up decades ago. A positive is there was toilet paper and soap. If you have children or boys around the 5 year range the toilet's so dang high it was like my son was pissing towards the top of the Eiffel tower. We paid $10 parking but 2 hours later around 3pm I guess they weren't collecting parking fees. People just drove in. read more

I've been to this beach for the first time this year and already been there a total of 3x. Absolutely beautiful beach. If you can go a day where the sun is out, it is absolute perfection! -What I love is that they allow dogs there and there are just so many of them walking along the shore line! -I've seen many people fish there, surf there, play frisbee, bbq, play music, etc pretty much everything! (But not a nude beach I don't think lol) -Only downside, the service sucks there, so make sure you have navigation since it is way out in the coast Tips: -bring $10 for parking fee -lawn chair or mat to sit on and soak up the sun -bring food -if you're gonna bring your dog, bring a leash in case and of course a poo bag -any fun activities(kites, football, frisbee, surf board etc.) Endless amount of opportunities to do here -100% recommend staying for the sunset! I like the beach but the amount it is to park is ridiculous, it's getting out of hand for mon-thurs it's $10.00 and for fri-sun it's $20.00. That is way too much for parking for the beach. The bathrooms need to be redone, the men's have 1 stall and 1 urinal. The woman's have 3 stalls. It's always a dump. I don't think we will be going here anymore. read more

Amazing scenery but way too many houses and bed and breakfasts right next to the beach. A bit too touristy for my liking - without any of the really good dining that you can get in Marin County. If you like a beach that's private and feels less claustrophobic, there's Stinson Beach in Marin County. All the beaches just north of Bodega Bay (so gorgeous!) feel very secluded and private. Of course, Tomales Bay is quiet, private, and lovely...but it feels like a giant lake...no ocean waves. read more

I'm a sucker for every beach I end up at. There's just something about the bay that puts a big ole smile on my face. Traffic can be terrible to get here if you're driving from SF in the afternoon...terrible, I tell ya! The beach appears to be clean. There are a ton of camping spots that you can reserve ahead of time online. We drove through the area and everyone was packed in there like sardines. I think I'd feel a little claustrophobic staying there. No showers. No electricity. It's also a spot for finding geoduck. I'd love to come back just for that. I spotted a sea lion super close to shore. Nothing like being one with nature...which brings me to the drive again! Beautiful. It was like visiting the zoo. We made the drive here to get out of the heat and have a picnic on the beach last Saturday. I was pretty surprised to see how busy it already was when we pulled up at 10:30AM. Not sure if it was the norm or because of COVID. The sign said $20 for parking but we were only charged $15-I'm not complaining! They had an employee that directed cars on where to park, which was nice to keep things moving. We laid out our blanket and were pretty much continuously assaulted by hopping and flying sand 'bugs'. I'd say that was pretty much the only sore point of our trip. I'd never seen so many on a beach before but maybe it was just the conditions or us sitting in the wrong area. We only had about 3 cars in front of us when we arrived at 10:30AM but when we left at 1:30PM, the line to get in was super long, I'd say at least 20-30 cars, so the earlier you can get there, the better! read more

It was a beautiful beach. I was looking for something closer to the Petaluma KOA and found this one. I thought I read it was quiet but it wasn't. As a pandemic review- if you are going for distancing, this weekend was not. There is only one road in and the queue around 11 am was pretty long. It's right next to the Lawson's Landing campground and, as a camper owner, I gasped how those towing can get through. But they did. On the weekend the parking is $20. Just like mask wearing, leash wearing was also about 50%. People pretty much stayed distant in their spots but also the social bubbles looked bigger. The beach and the view, however, is gorgeous. We liked watching the surfers. Water is cold as expected but the highlight for my kids was trying to slide down the sand dunes. The staff helped park and the bathrooms weren't bad for a beach bathroom. There is never enough stalls for women but that's a different issue. We had a great day exploring and glad we found it. read more

Went to this beach first time today. Beach and parking was very small. No area for picnic at all and they charge $10. Stinson is a great beach and it's free... Turns out my party was at the campground a mile down instead and I asked the lady that we made a mistake and can I get a refund. It was like less than 5 minutes only and she wouldn't give refund. Rude and cheap person and park. I think the right thing to do is simply give us our money back since we basically made a U turn. Cheap staff and park. read more

Its been years since i visited Dillion but they are one of the few really dog friendly beaches. I was very surprised how much they cleaned up the area with newer rental homes and a very clean environment. The country store was completely redone with a lot of locally made products and really good variety of snacks and drinks. The beach area parking costs 10 dollars per vehicle and their is a clean restroom facility nearby. The beach area itself was very clean and provides a beautiful access to the ocean. Being thats it so close to Pt Reyes you are surrounded by some of best beauty Northern California has to offer. read more

This beach is great! Anytime I can bring my pups on a beach I'm happy. We accessed the beach from Lawson's Landing Campground. We were there in January, so we virtually had the beach to ourselves. We did ride our bikes up to the Dillon Beach parking area on a Saturday, and the parking lot was almost full, but most people did not move far from where they accessed the beach from the parking area, so that left a mile of empty beach to explore. read more

We recently stayed at the Dillion Beach resort and I was extremely disappointing at the management. They had fire pits pictured on the coastal cabins. when we arrived you were not allowed to use them and given a $500 fine if you did. I kindly spoke to the lady at the store about this and said they "oversold" the amenities. I wanted compensation back but was rudely told no, told, we haven't had them in 18 months..etc. I have never dealt with such rude customer service. The beach was beautiful but thats not something the resort can take credit for. I will not be returning nor will I be recommending them. read more

Life's a Beach? Guess that all depends on the day. Not much a little R & R at a beautiful beach can't help fix. I find myself returning to this beautiful location time & time again. This last trip I brought home more sand than I cared for but that's a whole other story. The drive to this location from Sac isn't bad I find it relaxing unless of course you end up stuck in traffic. I normally try to leave sac no later than 9am to avoid all the Big Kids going to 6 flags. Driving through Petaluma is probably my favorite part. All the old homes and buildings are so beautiful. Parking is $7.00 for an all day pass per vehicle. Restrooms are.... ok but not great. They have a small little store that comes in handy when you forget things like wine or sunscreen. Two of the most important things to take to a beach, but that's just my opinion. I would love to see this park update their restroom and add out door showers. I know we are all trying to conserve water so even if they charged a small fee and had it on a timer I definitely take advantage and my truck would appreciate that as well. I seriously have a sandbox in the back of my truck right now. I blame the kids. Dogs are welcome and this is another reason I love this beach. Nothing more entertaining then watching all the different dogs play together. Although if your dog is hyper or hasn't been around other dogs please please keep him or her on a leash. We witnessed two unleashed dogs go after another dog who was leashed and the owner of the leashed dog ended up wt blood gushing out of her hand. Not cool. Dillon Beach, where you can take your poorly trained beasts and children to romp and be with other poorly behaved beasts and children. Nah, it's not that bad. Something to consider, the parking lot actually fills, and when it fills, you're not getting in unless someone is going out. We lucked out on a sunny Sunday afternoon when we rolled into line. We only had to wait about 15 minutes. It's $8.00 and you can stay as long as you like. We brought minimal stuff since we were bringing dogs. Just the necessities. I wish we had brought our drinking water down the beach but I didn't think of it. Drinking ocean water can be hard on your pups! The sand was ridiculously hot at 2pm. I managed to burn three large blisters on my feet, the kind you get when you eat pizza and you should have waited for it to cool off. I felt bad for our dogs, we ended up carrying one and sprinting with another to get to the water. Hot, hot! Honestly, it was a great time. They have bathrooms there and other amenities, but we just stuck to the beach. My only complaint is the people with dogs who don't pay attention. We were back off the ocean a bit to stay out of the main walkway and I can't tell you how many people let their sopping wet dogs just run up and run all over our stuff and get tangled in our dogs' leashes. A leash on a dog beach is a universal sign for please keep on walking, we don't want to play right now. To the man with the nutty black labrador who walked half a mile down the beach and forgot your dog on our towel, thanks... I think I'd come back but just with friends, or I'd bring a tent or area for our dogs to hang out. For the five asshats who had poorly behaved dogs there were many, many, many other awesome owners who took the hint and kept their Fido's minding their own business. read more

What is there not to love about Dillon Beach. The mile long beach?, The weather?, The cool views of the houses, The camping area? Letting your dogs run on the beach? What ever it is, its a great place to go. The little store can be pricey but its has just about everything, The little restaurant is good, but its been a long time since I've eaten there. But as I remember it was good. Be sure to ask for water, because they wont serve you any. (High water prices in Marin Co) The restrooms in the beach area are very clean, they get cleaned each day, so that's a major plus. There are trash cans located all around the parking lot, which are never full because they get dumped through out the day. The beach is huge, if you dont mind the kids running all over, or dogs barking like crazy, then you will have a great time. Be sure to keep your eyes open, I've seen a pod of dolphins playing in the water very close to the beach. So now its time to have some fun on the beach. Just a little reminder, please pick up your trash and your dogs waste. *****Sorry no review on camping. I have a house there, so I have never camped there. read more

I've never seen a "no pit bull sign" mentioned in other reviews, rather one stating dogs on or off leash must be in control at all times. Given that it is one of the only beaches to allow dogs off leash, as a dog owner I love this! BUT!!! We drove 35-40 miles out of our way to be confronted at the gate by a huge sign reading "SORRY, NO PITBULLS" My initial reaction was anger over the ignorance people have about this issue and of course the fact that we drove so far just to get here! Well, my wife and I were at least going to talk to the guy at the gate about this issue before leaving. He agreed to meet our dog and was appreciative that we were having the conversation with him instead of just trying to sneak our dog in as someone else had tried to do. After meeting our dog he let us in and we enjoyed our time running and playing on the beach despite the fact it was fogged in and cold. 1. If you are a pitbull owner, beware that they might not let you in and do try to remain calm and talk to the people at the gate. 2. More people need to put pressure on them to either drop the breed discrimination altogether OR make it a policy to inspect the temperament of ALL of the dogs entering the beach before allowing entry. It was obvious that my dog was one of the most well trained dogs on the beach that day and in the end, this is what truly matters! read more
