From the beginning, their communication and behavior did not feel professional. Still, we chose to trust that they would handle the transaction fairly and responsibly for both sides. During a phone call, Nate added Or to the line. When I asked Or directly whether he was a broker, he answered "yes." This was not accurate, and it showed that both agents were cooperating in a way that was not honest or transparent. Their tone throughout the process was rude, aggressive, and street‑level -- completely inappropriate for licensed real estate professionals handling a high‑value transaction. Because this behavior was so unusual, I am genuinely interested to know whether Compass Corporate, the brokerage that holds their license, would agree with my concerns or not. I am also interested in hearing what the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) would say about this situation. This is not a threat -- I simply want to understand how these organizations view conduct like this from agents who represent both sides of a transaction. The following day, leasing agent Hailey called to tell us that the owners liked our application and that we were in the running, but that other applicants had offered to pay the gardener fee. This was particularly frustrating because landscaping had previously been represented as an owner-covered expense, which made it feel as though applicants were suddenly being encouraged to compete by offering additional money and taking on costs that were not originally advertised as theirs. Despite feeling that this was extremely poor form, we made it clear that we did not want to lose the property. We were then told that financially, our application was stronger than the other applicants. The next day, we were officially offered the property in writing. We were told the lease would be sent to us by the end of the day for signature, and that the owner had agreed to honor the original arrangement and continue paying for the gardener. The lease never arrived. When I followed up the next day, I was suddenly told everything had been put on pause because another applicant had come in offering $200 more per month. I then spoke with another Compass agent, Jim, who specifically told me that he would not recommend that we offer more money, that they felt we were the better candidates, and that they wanted us to have the property. He said they would speak with the owners on our behalf. After hearing nothing for another six hours, I had to follow up yet again, only to finally be informed that the owners had decided to move forward with the applicant offering the additional $200. The entire experience felt incredibly misleading, disorganized, and disrespectful of our time. It left us with very little confidence in Compass's leasing practices or in the weight of anything communicated written or verbally by their agents.
