Café blumen - Blumenkohl Panini, Mandelkuchen, Chai Latte

They can do table service if you dine in but you can also just order and pay at the counter. It seems very popular with the hipster crowd but based on my experience it can be a welcoming place for anyone. The two baristas were both cheerful and patient with my not-good German. The menu is very vegan friendly - there are vegan options for sandwiches and baked goods, and there's oat milk for drinks. I got a Blumenkohl panini, a Mandelkuchen, and a Chai Latte. I was a fan of the panini, the smashed cauliflower in was actually very flavourful with curry-esque spices. No complaints on the latte. The Mandelkuchen fell short of my expectations, I thought it was on the dry side, although the strong almond flavour was nice. If I had been able to see a cross section of this before I ordered, I would've gotten something else - the cake hadn't been cut into yet when I ordered. The other cake slices looked better. Everything is priced reasonably - my total was about €14. It's the kind of place I'd probably go to all the time if I lived here.

I had already marked this place off as a place to grab something to eat, however it quickly turned out that they don't do breakfast - it is basically a coffee shop that has some cakes but that is about it. The other problem is that it is located on the fringes of the city. Still, it is a nice cafe, and there is a really cool church nearby as well. Oh, and the staff, and coffee, were nice as well.

The first time we saw this restaurant by the Gutenberg Museum, we thought it looks like a pricy,…read moretouristy place. But some of our friends tried it and highly recommended it, so we went for lunch to try it out. This place seems to be busy at any time of the day, and it's easy to see why. The place is modern and comfortable, on one wall there are lots of head silhouette... wonder if there is any significance who these people are? Menu is in German, and we find the price is slightly high, but not unreasonable, and the food quality is definitely top notch! They have the ubiquitous schnitzel, pretzel, sausages as well as other traditional dishes, but also have things like coconut curry soup and tempura, and vegan items. When we went there, asparagus was in season, so they had a special asparagus menu, listing about 10 dishes featuring asparagus: asparagus soup, asparagus risotto, asparagus tempura, coconut asparagus panna cotta... We were glad because, just outside the restaurant, there is this huge farmers market, stalls after stalls selling big fat green and white asparagus, but as tourists staying at a hotel we have no way to cook them. Now finally a chance to try the fresh asparagus. I asked my German friends, "You buy the asparagus at the market and cook them home?" "Ja!" "And you order them at restaurants too?" "Oh yes, we eat them several days a week. Because the season is very short." So what happen when the season is over? "We have to wait till next year." "They don't have them at supermarkets?" "No, because then they are not fresh they are no good!" Needless to say, we had the best asparagus of our lives, after which, we just don't bother with American asparagus anymore...

There is no menu in English but you can muddle through, I know you can. I had a lovely plate of cheese, meat, jelly, a hard-boiled egg, and some decorative fruit with a generous basket of bread. There was a liver wurst option on the menu that I substituted with cheese. There was a goat cheese on this plate that was really great. I ate little bites on bread and also had a chai latte. There is a cozy eating area in the back where you can sit and eat on comfy chairs with a coffee table. They also have books and magazines to read. How cool! The service was exceptional and lunch here was about $10-- you can't beat that especially for the quality and quantity of food. Thank you, Hintz and Kuntz for a lovely stop in Mainz.

The offer a large selection of regional wines, some craft beer and a typical German menu. I came here during Pfifferling season, which were featured in a special menu. The pork medallions with the Pfifferling cream sauce and dumplings I ordered were overall okay, but unfortunately the sauce was dominated by the cream rather than the mushrooms, and the medallions were more watery than juicy. The dumplings in the other hand were excellent!

He said Proviant Magazin had good German food. We walked several blocks to get there. We waited quite a long while before a young woman greeted us. We asked for a table for two, and she said, "No." We laughed because we thought she was being funny, and we saw an empty table. She said no again. So we went on the website to make a reservation. They accepted our reservation, but the server said, "so now you have a reservation!" There was still an empty table, and she saw our reservation s, but she still would not seat us. So we left and we are extremely upset. Extremely poor customer service. Extremely poor people skills. There are dozens of restaurants in this area, so we walked down the street and found a charming restaurant where we were welcomed. More about ExtraBlatt in a different and very complimentary review.
