Basically most Harvey Norman stores are set up the same. Huge entrances to the furniture department. Usually entrances are in the middle of lounges, if you go one way you will ge tmore furniture then curve round to televisions and the likes, go the other way and get beds and bedding. I have managed to grab some fantastic bargains on some great pillows here actually. Heaps better quality than at department stores and they lasted heaps longer. The Electrical and Computers are usually in a separate section at the rear or one side of the store, with electrical left of the spearate entrance to this area and computer, mobiles phones, camera's, PC software, etc to the right of the registers. I have never purchased nay major electrical items from this store but have bought some really good computer equipment here. Including a fantastic Acer laptop. It was already out so cheap and had a cah back offer making it even cheaper in the end. I have always received good service here and been given some great advice from people who obviously know their products. Getting the service is the hardest part - they are usually really busy, more so in computers and electrical departments, and it may take a little wait before someone is available to help you. However once you have someone their service is usually very good, I have never had an issue with a staff member at any Harvey Norman store.

But I find that you're paying for it when you buy stuff here. That's why they bitch and moan about online shopping. You'll get exactly the same thing and pay less than half the cost in many situations. I haven't ever bought furniture at Hardly Normal's, just because if I'm paying that much, it'll be from a premium store, not this place, or any of the others. I do feel a bit sorry for those that have to buy their computers here. Seriously, go to MSY, buy the parts, and learn to do it yourself. You'll end up with a new skill, a computer that costs literally half the price (or less), and everyone will tell you you're awesome. Which is what I can't tell this place.

I stocked up on a couple of obscure sizes I use for everyday notes. I was bemused by the shelf of instant coffee and kitchen cleaners in the centre of the shop, then more so by the paper plates and cups nearby. Then I realised - it's EVERYTHING an office could need. How clever! I always got cranky if our shop kitchen didn't have coffee or milk. Way to keep the employees happy - stock up on caffeine when you pop in for 500 reams of paper. In terms of paper, they're not very cheap, but they have a large range of oddities, like all different sizes and widths of receipt papers and specific printing paper. They also sell ink jets and blank CDs and DVDs, which always come in handy. A good little store, with friendly staff.

It's great of you need to stop in and pick something up on your way to work or to get things done on the way home. I love going in there in the evenings if I have to get photo's done or things bound or basically if I have to use any of their great services because they are always busy during normal business hours and you have to leave stuff there to be done and pick it up later. I have found going in the evenings they are not so busy and usually I can get my jobs done while I wait.........which unfortunately gives me 5 minutes to browse the store and probably buy more things i don't really need! Also I have not seen a store without parking right out the front - which is good when you buy too much. They have normal trolleys as well as the bigger ones for larger purchases. Apart from pads, pencils, pens and scrapbooks, you also have a great range of technology too that includes laptops, software, graphics calculators and more. I once bought a desk from this particular Officeworks. At around $79, the desk has lasted me at least five years and the staff were helpful enough to assist me in getting it out the store into the parking lot, which was very helpful. What I particularly like about Officeworks though is their printing service. I have had a couple of A2 posters printed from their stores and the quality is superb. For $20, they do a good job of getting the image onto the cardboard and also cutting it to the right size. In terms of their pricing, it is really good when items were on special. Back in the day when core i7 laptops were new, they had specials where you could get an i7 enabled laptop for under $999, which was definitely something, considering competitors would charge $1299+ for the same sort of laptop. Their specials aren't necessarily as good as they were but they are still definitely worth checking out. Something that I also like is their 3m of whiteout correction tape for 39c. That is definitely something worth investing in. They also have had some really good specials at this store in particular with 59c highlighter pens. Keep your eyes peeled in January because thats when all the stationery specials are.

Printers, paper, pens, scrapbooks, Minties...you name it and Officeworks will have it. Staff in store can be sparsely populated but are generally quite knowledgeable and if they aren't too sure will find someone who can help. The store also runs workshops on the weekend catering to small business owners. Prices are quite cheap and parking is a breeze.

They now have an aisle of upmarket fancy desk accessories, probably to rival Kikki K and to some extent Smiggle (in the fact that they are colour coded) - very nice! They have a large range of, well, everything. Their magazines are spread across three enormous, two sided displays, and cover everything from cooking, gardening, gossip, women's and men's health, puzzles, all kinds of hobbies and lots of special interest. It was the special interest that amused me the most, with magazines dedicated to Ancient Egypt, boar hunting, stamp collecting, cats and dogs and a much more. My only disappoint with the magazine collection was their complete lack of great Australian literary magazines; no Overland, Voiceworks, Meanjin, or even our local Wet Ink. Very sad. The store is currently overflowing with 2010 diaries and back to school stationary. Their arts and craft section is also impressive, with a huge range of paper for invites or decoration, as well as paints and brushes, and even an easel. Some of their wedding invites paper was beautiful, at $20 for 5 sheets! I gasped and put it back, carefully.

I don't seek out super cheap for everything, but I can't see the point in paying $5 for a kid's birthday card when I can pick one up for a dollar. The thing is, one by one, people have started saying to me, "I picked this up at Cheap as Chips. Great, eh!?" I reckon maybe, just maybe, it's starting to get a bit of a cult following with people other than the traditional bargain hunters. This place is a great variety store. Often if I can't find it at a supermarket or Big W, it'll be here. Case in point, suction cup hooks that I stick to mirror to hang necklaces, ribbons and my keys - four pack for $2. I've also picked up great containers for school snacks - $2 for three clear round containers with coloured lids, enough to a kid's handful of rice crackers or a small snack of tiny teddies (the packets are still a little big in one sitting for my munchkin). I've bought outdoor bamboo screens, toys, bath mats, dvd cases, a makeup holder, extension cords, christmas lights and a fish tank! All at ridiculously cheap prices. I know it all comes from China and we should support local business, but if you're after a bargain, this is the place and Mitcham has a great range. Oh, another thing worth noting is the website has a great search facility and can tell you the stock levels of products in different stores. Great for when the catalogue comes out.

She also said the hot dogs and burgers where the best in in town. I can't speak from experience (and I'm guessing she's a little biased), but I would definitely given them a try next time we're passing through. When I mentioned that I was a regular at the age of 10 and used to buy a $1 bag of lollies there in the 1980s, she whipped out a bag (albeit smaller than I remembered) and said they still sell them. Great service and a lovely location. Definitely worth stopping in here if you're ever driving past.
