I went there and it was a long first appointment with them trying really hard to have my start braces. I was not amused. They also charged me for something that they said was covered. I actually tried to make another appointment and they were booked 6 months out but then would continually call and email me to get me to make an appointment. I was fed up and found Southport Dentistry. The initial appointment went smoothly and didn't take forever. Dr. Dang advised me to purchase an electric toothbrush but didn't push me to purchase one at his office which was nice. The star in my opinion was the dental hygienist that did two of my cleanings. She was very thorough, gave me honest advice, and was very approachable. All the staff I have interacted with was very good and nice. I have a strict no texting policy and they would just call and leave a vm for me. Plenty of parking. There are some weekdays where they care closed and they are closed for long stretch of time during the holidays. Overall, even with my harsh work schedule I was able to book appointments.

I called specifically wanting a routine cleaning, and it wasn't explained to me that I would actually be coming in for a first-time patient evaluation instead. I understand that may have been my misunderstanding, and by itself it wouldn't have been a huge issue, but I took two hours off work expecting a cleaning and ended up being there for 15 minutes at most. It just added to the overall disappointing experience and I wish this would have been better communicated to me. For context, I've gone to the same dentist twice a year for the past 20 years. Who I never once revived a surprise bill from in all those 20 years! This was actually the first year I had fallen behind because of insurance issues, so I was really looking forward to finally getting my teeth cleaned. Instead, I left with a quote for around $1,000 worth of dental work and later received a claim showing that I owe approximately $400 because additional photos were taken of my teeth that my insurance did not cover. When this was suppose to be a Preventative appointment with a $0 co-pay. When I left the office there was no copay so they clearly never even checked to see if their photos would be covered under my specific plan ! This was after they had already taken X-ray photos ( that were covered). Every insurance plan is different, so assuming something will be covered it's extremely unprofessional in my option. And before they blame this on my insurance, my insurance covered the preventative services I went in for. The issue was the additional digital photos that were taken after the X-rays, which were apparently not covered. If an office is going to perform additional services, especially during what the patient believes is a preventative exam, the office should be verifying what is actually covered by that patient's specific insurance and informing them beforehand if they may be charged hundreds of dollars. I was not told I would be charged for these photos, and now I'm facing a roughly $400 bill for an exam I was told had no copay. If you're a new patient, I would ask before they take any additional digital photos of your teeth whether your insurance actually covers them or else you'll end of paying hundreds of dollars. The actual appointment was also extremely brief probably less than 10 minutes. The dentist told me I had no cavities, but I did not feel like my mouth was even thoroughly examined. There was no light used for an actual examination, and I didn't feel like my teeth were properly looked at before being told that I needed around $1,000 worth of work. what's funny is that when I told them that $1000 was a lot of money they immediately just offered me a payment plan .... Adding to it just not even feeling like they care . What's crazier is I noticed what appeared to be three cavities myself at home !!!! I'm not a dentist, but it was concerning to me that I could notice cavities when I had just been told I had zero cavities. I would have been completely fine being told that I needed $1,000 worth of dental work. My issue is that the overall experience left me feeling like the focus was more on how much work could be done than on actually caring for my teeth. I want to feel like my dentist is genuinely concerned about my dental health, especially if I'm being asked to spend $1,000 on treatment. Also, I was told someone would call me back about scheduling a regular cleaning, but I never received that call. However, I did receive an email fairly quickly regarding scheduling the $1,000 worth of treatment which is funny. Again, this is based on one appointment and my personal experience. I can't speak for anyone else's experience with this office. Unfortunately, mine left me feeling like the focus was more on money than caring about my teeth.

Luckily, my dental hygienist from my previous dental practice decided to leave and came to smile art dental. I decided to follow her and so far have been pleased with the professionalism and the care I have received here. I just come in for my bi-yearly routine cleanings and check-ups and so far have been made to feel listened to and respected. My husband, who is quite fearful of the dentist, was even willing to come to smile art dental himself, and give it a shot. She pulled my mouth so wide open she literally tore my labial tissue connecting my lip to my gums. If that wasn't bad enough, she carelessly spilled the bleach in my mouth, on my nose, tongue, upper & lower gums and outer lip. It burned so bad i had blisters in my upper and lower gums, outside my lips and on the right side of my nose. It burned and blistered from Friday to Monday. As a retired cop, I've been maced many times in the line of duty, but this was so much worse. After the fact, she did apologize, the carelessness was nonetheless unacceptable. Dr.Mercado did check in with me, but provided no form of compensation for a job that was incomplete nor for what I had unfortunately gone through. Im not only paying a small fortune for my procedure, but it seems as though every time I go there I'm being billed for something else outside of what I initially agreed to. I had assumed that for the high price tag it was all inclusive. I was wrong. I was charged for a tooth exam and was told I needed nearly 5 thousand dollars more in dental work. Funny, because my last visit to my local hygienist/Dentist, said my teeth looked great that my hygiene was great snd my gums were doing much better. Not at all happy thus far for the tremendous amount of money I've paid thus far. My experience has been one big disappointment after another. If something doesn't change soon, I will stop going to this practice.
