I'm currently in the process of looking for a new therapist and of course I know there's a possibility of me not "meshing well" with every new therapist despite the research I have done when finally deciding on that person and going ahead with making that 1st appointment BUT WOW, I can't believe how WRONG I was when deciding to make an appointment w/ Susan McCoy! I literally had to GET UP in the middle of our therapy session and LEAVE her office..peace out I'm gone!! I have never had to do this before and I really hope I never have to do it again. Mind you this is the very 1st time I have met her and she had no idea what my struggles are so naturally I'm filling her in and right from the start she kept interrupting me and wouldn't let me finish what I was saying despite me saying "can you please let me finish". Not only did she keep interrupting me she would say things like "well, you handled that like a teenage girl, how could have handled that like a grown woman" or "what's the worse case scenario?" This added to my frustration because if she had let me finish talking & stopped interrupting she would have realized that the story I was trying to tell her wasn't the current issue that I came to see her for..this was just background info for her to have a better understanding of my history and what I'm needing help with NOW and with her not letting me finish she was just wasting my time because I've worked through that previous issue already w/ my former therapist. Again, let me stress she knew ZERO DETAILS about me. I didn't fill in any paperwork beforehand, nor did I fill in any paperwork w/ the details on the day of the appointment. I say that because of course going to therapy is a dialogue w/ your therapist so they can help you see or understand what you are not seeing or give a different perspective of what may have happened BUT HOW CAN YOU START GIVING YOUR HELPFUL THERAPIST FEEDBACK IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE DETAILS?!!! In my humble opinion you can't. Side-note: I wrote that last sentence in all caps because I wish you could have felt the frustration I felt with just the short time I spent w/ Susan McCoy but since you can't, just imagine all the capital letters being just a little bit of my frustration. It really made no sense. It was horrible! I left that therapy session feeling more f$cked up then when I walked in! It was that bad! I can't imagine how much worse it would have been had I actually stayed the whole hour! Thankfully, this therapy session was covered w/ my EAP benefits and I can get a new EAP # because obviously it's not going to work out w/ Susan McCoy but it's frustrating to say the least because I'm still on the hunt for a new therapist because I do have high standards...including please let me finish a sentence. :)) All jokes aside..being a good therapist sometimes means talking less and listen more..especially when getting to know your potential new client because sometimes we, the client just want to feel heard. My personal experience was pretty bad. She made false assumptions and accusations right from the…read morestart in an email chain with my wife and I. After seeing her one session, she was telling me what I should be doing and what I wasn't doing. She was not asking questions, she was telling me and making accusations, presuming a lot of information and knowledge we hadn't discussed. I let that go, because I needed help. But I should have stop seeing her right then. She continued to seek to use the consoling session to accuse instead of to inquire. It felt like I was being cross examined in a legal case, instead her trying to establish trust and make it a safe environment to help me work through my issues. I wouldn't recommend her. I got very defensive after that, because I did not feel safe, I felt attacked. She couldn't separate herself from our situation, by her own admission, when a consoler is telling you that, run. That means they have their own issues they haven't worked through. It's one thing to have a bad, but professional consoler, than it is to have an unprofessional one that is bringing their on emotional baggage to each session. She even attempted to psychoanalyze my very recently deceased mother's personality traits to abstract some mental diagnoses, and then turn that around against me. My mother passed 01/22/17. She was unprofessional almost from the beginning and ending with her becoming emotional involved and bringing her own emotional baggage to our consoling sessions. She was not helpful, I think she even made the situation worse.
