Riccardo and his team were out in the freezing temps finishing the railings. Everything came out great; communications were smooth throughout; and cleanup was perfect. Working with Masonworks has been a roller coaster. They are very, very good at the masonry aspect,…read morebut we had a negative experience with everything outside of the excellent stone walls and patio they built for us. They have built beautiful flat stone walls for us in our front and back yards. We were very impressed with them after the first job they did for us in our front yard a few years ago, so we did not even look at other companies when we wanted to spruce up our backyard this year. The garden walls they built in the backyard were once again beautiful. However, as a gardener, I was disappointed and frustrated by the following things: - Our contract included 50/50 loam compost for the new garden beds. During the job, we caught them filling the beds with the grass they had pulled up from our old lawn and asked them to stop doing that. - When I went to start planting, I found that the garden beds had only a layer of new soil but that my shovel quickly hit a lot of big rocks and uncovered old soil, debris, and trash. - They completely trampled and destroyed my established perennial garden, which was located in a garden bed above where the new beds were built. They also broke several pavers in a little garden path I had and removed them without replacing them. - They recommended microclover for my lawn and seeded it for us as part of the contract, but it grew in quite spotty despite us maintaining it properly with daily waterings. I contacted them about the first issue and their initial response was to tell me that the stones I was finding were part of the wall construction - this was not the case. They had someone come out to take a look and concluded that the soil did need to be replaced, which they finally did. It is much better now, though I still have found some large stones in it. However, in the process of solving that issue, they caused the second one - many of the perennials that my mother and I had worked to plant over the past four years were totally destroyed. They offered me a credit to compensate for the loss, or the option to have them reinstall new flowers, but by that point I just didn't want them near my garden anymore so accepted the credit. I didn't bother contacting them about the spotty lawn - I threw down some grass seeds yesterday to try and fill in the gaps. While I appreciated that they did eventually take steps to resolve the issues, I found it quite frustrating to have to keep reaching out just to get them to do what they really should have done in the first place. They never did a final walkthrough as I've seen other contractors do. No apology for destroying my garden. They have a Benjamin Franklin quote, "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" - I definitely felt some of that bitterness throughout this process. My conclusion is that they are really excellent masons but do not understand or respect gardens. If you hire them, be prepared to have to deal with that.

We just had a great experience working with Eligio to replace an old asphalt driveway on the side…read moreof our house on a sloping retaining wall. Eligio proposed several materials and adjusted them in line with the specific features we were looking for. We wanted a surface that would be both stable under the specific conditions (directly up against the foundation of our house and next to the sloping retaining wall, but also more porous than the asphalt. Eligio and his crew did a meticulous job to make sure the ground was properly regraded to improve water flow away from the house while making the surface more porous (hence the wider spacing between the cobblestones. He also adapted the design so I could have some planting space between the wall and the cobble stone. We were impressed with the crew's diligence and efficiency. Given the particular challenges and materials we were looking for, I consider the price to have been very fair.

Zine's crew first replaced the stucco on my house back in the Spring. It developed cracks and…read morepeeling from the foundation. They came back a second time to redo their work. The same thing happened. Zine decided to return the third time and replace the problematic sections that were separating from the foundation. It is now the middle of October and I continue to have the same issue. He said he'll return and has not yet. He has suggested that I need to paint | seal the stucco. I want to do that but first need to know that it does not separate from the foundation so I don't waste my effort. Update on Oct 24. Zine came out to meet with me today. I now understand we had a miscommunication. He said he is a man of his word and I believe him. I will post photos of the new work and results. It might be in the Spring since the weather is getting too cold for stucco work.

I had noticed that a support column on my porch had been leaning and buckling outward. Upon further investigating the issue it turned out that the extent of the damage was greater than appeared on the surface as the post had completely rotted through, the wall had pulled away from the deck and the foundation underneath had crumbled. Despite the amount of work involved, John remained honest and fair as he provided me with several options and worked with me and my budget to get the best result possible to meet both my expectations as well as his high standard of quality. I am beyond pleased with the final outcome! They managed to get the entire side of the porch torn down, the foundation properly repaired and then have it all rebuilt and tied back into the existing stairs and porch within just a few days. We were conned by Sean Douglas of Carleone Masonry. We had a written agreement for a new basement…read morefloor that specifically included a vapor barrier. After invoicing us and getting halfway through the job, he demanded additional charges for concrete and the pump that had never been mentioned verbally or included in the earlier written invoice. Despite our repeatedly asking him, both the day before and on the day of the concrete pour, to install the agreed-upon vapor barrier, he waited until the last minute and said there was no need for vapor barrier. When we insisted, his workers hastily laid down an extremely thin plastic painter's sheet (0.31 mil), which was torn in numerous places as soon as it came into contact with the gravel. This is not a vapor barrier, MA building code requires min 6 mil, ideally 10 mil vapor barrier. Sean claimed that he uses this sheet all the time and that it was OK. We stopped the concrete pour halfway through, resulting in the loss of concrete we had already paid for, and terminated the contract. We ultimately spent approximately $14,400, yet only about one-third of the basement floor was poured, and the poured portion does not have the agreed-upon vapor barrier, which is against the MA building code. His invoice to finish this job was around $12,000. On the day of the pour, Sean also brought in outside workers to trowel-finish the poured portion of the concrete floor, an additional cost that we paid for a partially finished floor. This was an extremely frustrating and costly experience. We strongly recommend that others stay away from Carleone Masonry and Sean Douglas. Seeing the other negative reviews, there is clearly a pattern.

Chris did a fine job redoing a brick walkway that was mired by dips, broken curbing and an…read moreunsecured border. I would not have believed what a difference it made! All the bricks were pulled up and the highest standards used to reset and set brick. A cement curbing under the brick not only secured brick but provided a means for directing run off water. The brick was also power washed. (Unfortunately, other remodeling elsewhere created dust and dirt on brick afterwards but that will be hosed off.)

They nearly burned down my house! I hired them to install a fireplace in my house. They placed the…read morefire box straight against the beams of the house. Only discovered it when I had a fire and saw smoke coming from outside the fireplace. When a different contractor took out the fireplace, the beams in the walls were scotched and blackened. It's a wooden house, and I had my whole family inside the house that night. They always cemented the chimney cap to the top of the chimney so it could be cleaned.
