Definitely worth a visit.

This place feels a lot like it... but... I don't know. Part of it is probably the location, right in the middle of industrial Elm Hill Pike. Part of it is the ambiance, which feels more like a small warehouse than a store. Part of it is the very blase attitude of the employees: they're very whatever, when I'm looking for a smile and some chitchat. They've got lots of great snacks and they're cheap cheap cheap. Stuff looks like vending food stuff and at least 25% cheaper. Loving that. There's janitorial stuff, business stuff, office supplies, that kind of thing. You can get in and out there faster than Sam's, and it's reasonably priced, but it's got a chilly attitude, and not very inviting.

I really like that they sell the 20oz Coke products. Most places only carry the 16oz versions. Although I have never really asked any questions of the staff, this place has always been friendly to me. I wish they had later hours in the evening and open on weekends, but I understand because their client base is probably not large enough to warrant paying someone to stay open later. Nashville seems to be in short supply for places like this. I'm glad Merchant Mart is here for concessions type businesses.

Here you'll find vinyl (albums & singles); posters; pipes ($15); magnets; weed bags; guitar cutting boards; old Playboys (thankfully still wrapped); vintage books; costume jewelry; T-shirts; baseball caps; porcelain skulls; vintage clothing (2nd floor); vintage furniture; metal signage; & the handmade lighted signs that Skip & Ron make, along w/ much more! Worst place I have been in...ever. My wife and I will never go back…read more Worst owner. He was narcissistic, rude, condescending and cruel to customers who simply asked about prices. Vile human being. First. Super dirty feel. Did not feel like the "store" which is filled with junk has ever been swept. All the items are either overpriced, tourist crap (t-shirts, cutting boards, trucker hats.) the book and record selection was absolutely pathetic. Still we wanted to support this business. I didn't dare say anything because of what happened next. I witnessed the most ugly customer service ever in any business we have ever been in. First, another customer, an elderly man asked about book prices, and the owner basically told the man that he was cheap for asking. Then all hell broke loose when another customer bought some items that were clearly labeled as one price (I checked,) and the owner switched up the price on that customer to try to get more money. The owner lied to the customers face and then he got hostile. The customer said they didn't want the item, because the price was clearly marked, and it's the only reason he wanted the item. The owner reacted like he was being attacked...then he started screaming at the top of his lungs, basically calling the customer a liar. Then the owner started yelling profanities and vulgar language at the customer. Basically saying that he was going to "SA" the customer. It was CRAZY! Then, condescendingly, the owner told the customer to put the items back where they got them, and the customer refused. The customer told the owner that he didn't appreciate being called a liar, and the price was clearly marked. After the owner shouted "f- you." Four or five times, the customer, who was on his way out and said "f-you too, you're a liar." That enraged the owner to the extent that he started screaming and every other word was the f-word. Then it was a shouting match, because the customer had enough of the abuse and verbal assault for no reason. All over the owner either mistaking or forgetting the right price. The customer's friend was there and helped the customer walk out as the man was basically calling him a bigoted slur that shocked even people walking by outside. I ran into the couple at the bookstore down the block (Rhino Books,) where they were calming down. They pointed out that, over the years, they have bought over $100 on books, records and souvenirs from that place. At Rhino, the man spent over $500 on books, so they had money to spend that day--the customer was a really nice person who drove two hours to visit the VA in Nashville, and he chose to go to that store to support local businesses. The owner had been screaming at a decorated war veteran who was disabled! The customer was in the right this time. When I left "Cruel Stuff," I saw that the customer was right about the price. I usually only write positive things if I can. I have nothing to positive to say about Cool Stuff and Weird Things, I would call it "Cruel stuff and rude things." This owner was absolutely rude and what he did and said was completely uncalled for--the way that owner treated his customers...and then screaming I waited two days to say anything. I debated about posting this. That customer wanted to help this business out, only to be screamed at, and it was a good thing that customer had his family member with him because that rude owner was about to get violent. I don't care if they sell full-sized, brand new Corvettes for $20, me and my wife will never set foot in this store for as long as I live. Zero stars. Shame on this owner for verbally assaulting customers simply because his store is poorly organized and he doesn't even know his own prices. It's a damned thrift store, and he is so delusional that he thinks people don't barter in thrift stores. That's what is normal.

While it may not be a huge spot, it is filled to the brim with goods of all varieties and is certainly still a store that I can and have easily been entertained at for a while. We popped in looking for some furniture in the form of a dining table set and we ended up leaving with a candle, some outdoor lights and a cooler...none of which we were after or truly in need of. Back to the table...they had a table we loved, but they had it due to some damage on it and unfortunately the scratch was a little too deep to fix so we sadly passed. Most of the items are new in package, but they do sell second life items that feature some variety of damage. Nothing glaring, but enough to be noticeable on most of these items. Overall, The Yard Sale Store was a cool spot to spend some time on a weekend afternoon. While we do not find ourselves in Mt. Juliet too often, when we do...this place with be on the radar!

I got some boba and swung by Five Daughter's Bakery AKA the bakery with the 100-layered donut / cronut which takes three days to make. If I was hungrier I would have tried out of the restaurants. One point of confusion is the parking. It's technically free, but you have to register inside to get a voucher after scanning a QR code posted outside. The marketplace is not a particularly busy area unlike downtown, so I'm not sure why the marketplace has to make it so complex. I'm not sure there are many people parking and walking off...

A good amount of stuff going on in here: you can find clothing (more on the conservativ/athleisure wear side of the spectrum), gifts, snacks, a salon, cycling classes, coffee, a Mediterranean food stand, an Italian restaurant and more. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface! While I didn't try any of the food options besides the gourmet popcorn place (which is surprisingly affordable for gourmet popcorn!) I loved the drinks I had at both Eat Bubbles (boba, matcha etc) and the irresistible Pont Neuf wine bar (both of which I'll review separately). And perhaps best of all: they have great seating areas throughout in which you can set up shop for working remotely, drinking your drinks, eating your snacks... so have at it!

The blocks occupied feel like its own little community in the middle of the bigger city. It definitely has it's own vibe and is uniquely East Nashville. When we are in East, we normally make it point to stop in a shop or two. International Coffee, Galena Garlic and Adobe Mercantile are usually spots we frequent when wandering around, and Gift Horse is a cool place for a quirky or local gift for folks. Food wise, Maru and East Creamery are always on point and hit the spot! Hours of each shop differ, so make sure you look specifically at the hours of the places you want to visit. There is no real consistency amongst the shops from an overall hours perspective, which can be a tad frustrating. Parking is a bit wonky as well, nothing really dedicated at all times. There are a few pay lots nearby and street parking is plentiful in the area. Overall, Shoppes on Fatherland is a cool East community and is a good spot to spend a little time when you have nothing going on. It's always an after or before dinner/drink place for us.

I like the idea of the Idea Hatchery. This stretch of Woodland is full of 'hidden' businesses that…read moreblend in with the older homes on the street. Because of the name, I guessed the Idea Hatchery was a shared workspace or a writing collective. It *only* took me [redacted] years to get out of my car and walk in to see what's what. Flanked by an antiques shop and an art gallery (if you've done Tomato Arts Fest you know right where this is), the collective's appearance is a bit nondescript but that makes the discovery all the better, no? Inside the threshold are eight uniquely (east) Nashville businesses. As an incubator, the Hatchery is a perfect spot to test out concepts and gain sea legs before opting for a bigger location or an expanded footprint. It's a great go-between from online/out of the house to stand alone brick and mortar. I believe this is the spiritual parent to the Shoppes on Fatherland. Right now the current occupants tend to skew a bit 'female' in what they do (fashion, art, etc.) but that's not to say that there isn't a lot for a number of demographics to choose from. Selfishly, I'm hoping that some sort of food/treat business takes up residence in the shops. Toffee? Taffy? Shaved Ice? I can keep going folks. Actually, an old-timey, regional candy store would fit in well. Boom. I just found your newest tenant. Sort of. East End has a lot of fun businesses to explore. Next time you're in the neighborhood, scoot just a bit past that (locally) famous intersection and get a taste of what the area has to offer. I think you'll enjoy what you find. At the very least, it's a nice way to pass the time on a lazy weekend day.
