I really wanted to love this place, especially after reading a great endorsement from a major fine art photographer via his Instagram account. Five dollars a roll is unbeatable. I sent Dexter's five rolls of 120, and didn't hear anything back, until two weeks later when I decided to call them. They indeed received the film, and for some reason didn't begin the processing until after that phone call. I was told I would be given a tracking number after they were finished and on their way. Another two weeks passed without any communication, and again I placed a phone call inquiring about the status of the film, when I was told, they were "right here", and were not shipped out. Again, was told I would receive a tracking number, and, per usual, radio silence. Five weeks to get five rolls processed, and shipped back. Unacceptable. Figuring that had to be a fluke, I tried a second time. Thankfully this time I did receive a call saying they got the film, and processing was a little bit faster. Again, the promise of another phone call with a tracking number was made, but unfortunately not followed through. Thankfully the film made it back after a couple of weeks of wondering if I would ever see the results of my labors, and upon opening the box, all the film was there, sleeved and uncut, just as requested...except for one roll, which was unsleeved, and as a result, scratched and damaged as one might expect from being treated as carelessly as this shipment was. I get it, "laid back", "cool vibe" and all the descriptors. As nice as the people were on the phone, not one followed through with what they said they would, and five weeks to get film processed, in addition to how sloppy the craftsmanship was is simply unacceptable. I'm glad that it works out for others, and hopefully my experience was an isolated one, but there is no way my film, nor business will head the direction of Dexters again, and I will definitely not recommend that anyone patronize this store. read more

Wow....Just plain wow. Customer service is a dying service. What happened? where did it go? Why is it gone. Please please please, if your in the business of selling things, you have What's called "customers ". These "customers" are more than likely going to spend some money in your business. If your service associate FAILS to acknowledge a customer in the store then your lacking basic skills. Then you fail to make ANY sort of contact with this possible customer because your on the phone then we have some serious problems. To the owner: Please hire associates who know how to make contact with customers and engage with them. I waited over 5 minutes while your associate saw me, ignored me, continued conversation on phone like I was non-existant. Well, Sorry but you lost a possible customer and now have a shitty review. We brought some film to Dexter's 4 months or so ago to be developed. My husband is a photographer, and had some of his work on this film, and there were also several photos of now-deceased members of my family included in these rolls. They, at first, seemed very friendly and gave us a time-frame for having the film developed. The weeks and then months started passing, and they have lost our film. No one will take responsibility for it, and no one seems too worried about the fact that it's been lost. My husband has been by several times, and has always been given the run-around. No one knows where it went, and no one cares. I did buy a camera from them prior to them losing our film, and the camera is fine, but I could have purchased a camera anywhere -- those pictures were one of a kind. Don't trust these guys with anything that's important to you. read more

I tried getting photos printed at Dexters a year ago and I am never going back, finally getting around to writing a review. I went here the first time I wanted prints done. I came in with a USB stick and a list of filenames and the corresponding sizes I wanted photos printed at. I had some odd dimensions on two photos, so I specifically went over this with the clerk. When I got my photos back, they printed those photos wrong, and I didnt look until I got home. I called and went back in later that week to get the photos redone. They couldnt find the files so I emailed them. I went in again to make sure and was sitting around waiting while the guy sat on his macbook confused about what was happening, once he was finally done he said they'd call me when they printed them. I waited a month before calling them, and when I did, the person who answered had no idea what I was talking about. I wanted to like this place, but I'm never going back. read more

I recently moved to Ventura from LA and was in search of a quality photo printing company. I did some research on local spots in Ventura and Dexter's came up. I printed 8 archival fine art prints with them through their online site and was very pleased by the quality and quick turn around. I highly recommend Dexter's! my favorite place in all of ventura everyone here is so nice and attentive to whatever camera needs or general questions you might have. turn around for getting film back is quick, prices are great and they have some really nice 35mm almost always on hand. if you're just getting into photography or is an expert and haven't been here, I suggest this place. Dexter's Camera a classic old-fashioned throwback camera shop. Greg the owner does basic camera cleaning and repair and the complex stuff gets sent out. Where else are you going to get special-order photo stuff, black and white film or actual services like film transfer these days? They just started doing color film processing in-house so I go there a lot. I like the fact that it doesn't look like the inside of a Big Box store - old wood shelves with used cameras and vintage photo equipment line the walls and they still cater to the photographer instead of the shopaholics. They carry black and white and instant films in stock and even had Kodak Infrared film in the fridge. Keep up the vintage and retro collection and long live Dexter's, the last of the old-fashioned, small town, family-owned camera stores. read more

Update to the case of my missing film, now 43 more days have passed. On June 21, 2014 (Five months tomorrow) I dropped of five rolls of film at Dexter's Camera and was told that it could take up to three weeks to get have the photos returned to me. After several visits to Dexters and given the run around on the when my photos would be available. They now claim that they are lost and that it is "Not their fault". Who's fault is it exactly then? Surprisingly, the blame seems to be on me as the customer, at least that the undertone that I'm getting during all of the visits that I have made trying desperately to get my photos. In fact upon arriving, one of the employees (or co-owner) actually without missing a beat said as he walked into the room "Sorry we lost your photos, that really sucks, we've looked everywhere". In my years as a professional photographer I have never had the mis-fortune of being in this position. Do I recommend Dexter's Camera? NO. Why? Because their actions tell me they simply don't care. read more

I rarely write a negative review but I feel that I need to warn photographers about this place. I took in two rolls of film around Thanksgiving: black and white Tri-X and color Fuji 400 ProH. I got an email that they were ready around the first of December but I was out of town and didn't pick them up until the middle of December. The young man who helped me went away from the door/counter and came back a couple of minutes later. He asked my name again. He then disappeared for nearly six minutes. When he returned he handed me my processing with no comment, no apology for taking so long. What immediately surprised me was that both rolls of negatives were uncut and not in ordinary sleeves, but just handed to me in the full strips of 36 each in a rapper but not cut into five or six frames and in sleeves like one normally finds processed film. it's obviously an awkward way to handle film. When I looked at the prints both the color and black and white were badly overexposed, and looking at the negatives, the pictures were hardly salvageable. My first reaction was that there was something wrong with the Canon F-1 that I was shooting with. I bought another roll of the Fuji 400 and shot it with the same camera, nearly the same subjects, and under the same lighting conditions. I subsequently had the film processed by Samy's Camera. This time the prints were fine and the exposures right on. The mistake was clearly in the processing by Dexter's. I won't be returning to this shop. read more

I love Dexter's Camera! They guys there are always super helpful, I've been getting camera supplies here since I was a teenager. Whether it's film, or printing papers, or developer, they always have exactly what I need, and if you don't know exactly what to get they will definitely help you figure it out. The last REAL camera store in Ventura county. A must-see for any film camera buff, Dexter's Camera should be made into a Ventura historic landmark (despite their move from their downtown location). Their new location is on a quaint little neighborhood street right off of Main Street, and is much less stressful and easier to find parking than their old shop downtown. Their staff was very friendly and knowledgable, and was able to help me find just what the parts I was looking for for my old Nikon. Plus their wide array of film is awesome; probably one of the few stores in Ventura to even sell film! Whenever you're in Ventura, you give Dexter's a visit. read more

BEST STORE EVER!!! I've been to a lot of photography stores. This is more of a processor but to find a processor in this day in age is incredible. A true craftsman saving the arts. He also does excellent repairs and is very very very fair on pricing. Often he will take a look at your camera do a little something and hand it back no charge. I'm a film shooter and send give Dexter's about 5 rolls a week for processing and they are very reliable. Greg the owner is honest and great to work with. They process C-41 in house and it usually takes a day but for $5.00 its a great deal and a days wait is no big deal. E6 and 120 film will take some time because it is sent out. Since not a lot of people actually shot this film a two week wait is the norm anywhere you go. As far as repairs go I had two Canon 1n's cleaned and serviced and they turned it around in a day and at a reasonable price. These guys definitely get a thumbs up from me and I would not go anywhere else for my film camera needs. read more

I'm a film guy, and I was happy to find an old school camera shop as a stop on my drive from LA back to San Francisco. My camera is an older Hasselblad, so I always look for new accessories at any camera store that has a used department. Dexter's has an awesome camera collection that is worth the trip on its own to see. I ended up buying a film back from them. I was nervous to spend about $200 on it, but it was much cheaper than the ones I was finding online. The film back works great! No light leaks and excellent frame spacing. I only wish I wasn't so far away here in the SF Bay Area so I could visit more often. read more

Knowledgeable and nice - there aren't many camera stores around any longer - especially non-corporate ones.
