Perfect for a stroller, and some nature scavenger hunts. The playground itself is huge and looked really well cared for. The toddler area was unfortunately closed during our visit, but the rest of the space more than made up for it. There are tons of benches and seating all around, and you can see most of the playground from just about anywhere, which is so helpful when you're keeping an eye on kiddos. There's a massive covered pavilion area that would be perfect for group meetups or a picnic in the shade. And while it was still closed for the season, the splash pad/water park area looked like fun! Definitely planning to come back in the summer to check it out! Such a great spot to have in the area!

I guess there's a dog park here as well, but it seems people have listed the dog park separately for it's own reviews.

The boardwalk is exposed so make sure to bring a hat, sun glasses, and some sunscreen. The nature trails are mostly covered under tree canopies, are short loops, dog friendly, but depending on the time of day, can be a bit crowded. Also note that there is another Huntley Meadow Park at the junction of S. Kings Hwy and Telegraph Rd. This park has wide hardball paved paths that ends at the edge of the lake.

It has been an incredibly fun adventure for us - finding parks and places to enjoy, hike, and immerse ourselves in the nature, beauty of the outdoors, and wildlife in Virginia & Maryland. We walked all the trails in the Hidden Pond Park and liked spending time in the Hidden Pond Nature Center in the park. There are many activities for children and adults in the parks. The staff there were friendly and helpful. The park is well maintained and there are so many picturesque areas and hiking trails to experience there. We spent about three hours in the park. The park was peaceful and quiet. We experienced no traffic and saw very few people during our hike on the trails. Austin, one of the staff in the Nature Center, said it had to do with the geography & location of the park. Along the trails are many sitting areas to take a break. We saw many kinds of birds, deer, flowers, and foxes during our time in the park. Strongly recommend wearing bug repellent & sunscreen and checking out a map of the trails in the nature center. Beautiful park to visit during each season and very ideal for wildlife photographers and for peaceful & quiet walks in the park.

Pretty eventful day, April 15, 2026. Staff were helpful and nice! Nature Center provides wildlife education and animals, a place to refill water or use the utilities. I wouldn't expect to see all that we seen, as think we were pretty lucky to come across all of that in one day. For instance as soon as we sat down on the bench near the river, the hawk flew over and landed nearby, first to get a drink of water then perched nearby. The fox happened to be coming to the river before we locked eyes and ran off while I fumbled with my dang lens cap, as always. Good luck!

Mason Neck is a peninsula which is mostly parkland but is divided confusingly among several…read moredifferent jurisdictions. The best views are the state park, which this is not. The federal wildlife refuge amounts to a couple of miles of trail through the forest, leading to an overlook. There wasn't a ton of wildlife when I dropped in, though I just caught site of a large bird of prey on my way back. The topography wasn't as varied, nor the trails as extensive, as compared to the state park which is just a bit farther down the road. However, that costs money and this does not, so this section is still nice for what it is.

This park has a small parking lot. It is located on the site of the old Fort Foote. There is not…read moremuch of the Fort remaining. I saw 2 15-inch Rodman Cannons, a house water trof and some collapsed cement structures. At the front of the park is a huge patch of green space with picnic tables under shade trees and a restroom structure. The Fort dates back to 1863, was constructed to defend the water approach to Washington DC and operated to 1878. It spans about 70 acres and sits 100 feet above the Potomac River. Along the backside of the trail (along the river) you can see Alexandria, The George Washington Masonic National Memorial, Mount Vernon and other monuments. The Park also has a small beach area to explore as well. I liked the placard, to the left as you enter the trails with the picture that has the superimposed image of what the Fort's gate looked like. I gave me a real idea of where the Fort was and you can really see where the gate would have been. To the left is also where you will find the 2 cannons. If you go to the right you will eventually hit the beach, The park is located off the water and has some nice, be it short nature trails. There are also some open green space. There was a guy in one of the fields letting his unleashed dogs running wild. Outside of the few remnants of the Fort, and some information placards, this is a decent and somewhat fairly maintained nature park. It is far off of the road and is very peaceful. I would recommend wearing long pants and a long sleeved shirt because some areas has some thick brush. Bug spray would not be a bad idea either. I like this park. You can just feel the history. I wish there was more of the Fort that was preserved, but oh well, the placards placed around the park do a decent job explaining where you are located in reference to the Fort. This place is definitely worth a visit. Being a nature park, it is not very accesible and would be very challenging for someone with mobility issues. I enjoyed my time at the park in addition to getting a little peace, I learned a bit as well.

It's one of those hidden gems!…read more Great place to walk / hang out Great place to walk around, play basketball, chalk art the sidewalks, have a picnic. Located below the I-495 -Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the park is right at the southernmost point and great water views of Virginia and sites within Maryland like the National Harbor across the Potomac River. There is a walking trail along the river with informational signs and displays that describe the really cool, informative information markers of sights and the past history of the area along the trail. A 10-minute walk on the trail will bring you to other parks (Ford's Landing, Shipyard, and Roberdeaux) and eventually to Old Town Alexandria with its many shops and restaurants --situated along the water. Another added plus is that the park offers a place for fishing, playgrounds, basketball courts, and multi-use fields. I came here with some friends for the first time and had a relaxing time just being outdoors and enjoying this great space in nature. We grabbed a picnic table....while having lunch and taking in the weather. Between the space and multi-use areas, it is the perfect spot to for walks along the river, running, exercising or simply....raking time to put things on pause and enjoy the outdoors. ELITE TIP: It is a good place to park if you are planning to visit Old Town Alexandria and want an easy place to park.....without having to deal with the limited street parking, risk of parking meter tickets or the high price garage parking. and enjoy a walk along the river.

FYI for horse people: The Harley Road trailhead parking lot is designed for horse trailers, with a nice turnaround. No need to back up! The map that comes up on yelp shows the BLM office, check the trail map online for trailhead parking lots. There are maps at the parking lots to take, with mileage for trail segments. I'm reviewing the recently opened 4.6 mile South Branch hiking and mountain bike trail. The trail is accessible from a few parking lots (see the trail map). I parked at the lot on Old Colchester Rd, which only has space for about 6 cars, but I've never had trouble parking. There are no restrooms, water fountains, or garbage cans, so plan to bring water, and pack your trash out. I think they participate in managed hunts (announced) but I would not be surprised to find poachers, so think twice about dressing in deer colored clothes! I've hiked and jogged the trail. There are a few segments where the trail splits and then merges, one more difficult segment for mountain bikes, another for hikers. The trails are clearly marked, and you can easily make a longer hike by combining trails. South Branch is shady, the whole way. The hills are challenging enough to be fun without being miserably painful. If you think of Burke Lake's trail as a 1 on a 1 to 10 degree of difficulty, I'd rate South Branch as a 3 or 4 but I'm not the strongest hiker. There isn't room for 2 to walk side by side in most spots, and keep your ears open. We yielded the trail to bikes, but the bike riders slowed and didn't mow us down. If everyone plays well together it will help - a bike could topple down steep ravines in a couple of spots, they need some room. But bikes need to watch out too. Dogs are allowed, leash laws apply. I don't think a jogging stroller would make it. Very bumpy. The marshy area has a raised walkway and the small creeks have bridges, so you will not get soaked. Mud pits have honeycomb cinderblock retainers which is really nice. I think this trail is a blast. I don't like crowds and I like a challenge. This is a hard run for me, but a good one. I recently visited this park and it was honestly a pretty disappointing experience. The grass was…read moreovergrown and looked like it hadn't been maintained in a while. Several trash cans were overflowing, and there was litter scattered around the walking paths. The playground equipment also seemed worn down and not very clean. On top of that, the bathrooms were in poor condition and didn't seem to be cleaned regularly. It made the whole park feel neglected. Parks are supposed to be relaxing places to spend time outside, but this one just felt poorly taken care of. I hope the city puts more effort into maintaining it because it could be a really nice spot if it were cleaner and better managed.

That's not a huge loss, but for those who love angling, it's disappointing. Such is life as River Mill Park has some nice river views. My guess is when it warms up, maybe they'll have some outdoor concerts or family events here. Park in the public lots. This isn't a long walk. There's the cheesy "Love" sign you can get a picture with your significant other if you have one. I do like that there was a menorah and Christmas tree. Today this plus the holidays wreaths on the bridge were done with class. The new rocking bench is solid. Do I wish it was wooden? Yep but it's probably for safety reasons. The walkways had some ice on them. Definitely watch your step. I think this is a good place to chill from the busy land of northern Virginia. If you're in the area it's worth stopping by here.
