I dropped off a hospital grade recliner with an all metal frame. The only thing that was wood was the hollowed out press board and foot rest. When this modern life gifts me with toxic waste, I call the MC-HHW team…read more The thought of closing my eyes and heaving my various unwanted jugs of antifreeze, poisonous cleaners, and other scary chemicals into the curb-side trash is enough to give me nightmares for weeks. The Household Hazardous Waste program has saved me from a potential lifetime of nightly torment by providing me with a responsible way to get these chemicals out from under my sink. I give a call to MC-HHW, list the items that I want to divest myself of, communicate some basic personal information, and set up an appointment to drop off the stuff. (It's too bad I can't stop by whenever is most convenient for me, but, hey - they're doing me a favor. And it's free!) On the scheduled day I load said items into my trunk, and at the ordained time I drive into the MC-HHW loading dock. The loading dock looks like a modified and gated carport - it's a right-hand turn just before the recycling area. As I pull up, I roll down the window, pop the trunk and stay in my car. (They don't like it when you try to open your car door and would probably have an apoplectic fit if you were to get out and walk around.) As one person confirms my information and marks my name off a list, another removes the chemicals from and then closes my trunk. The whole process takes only a minute. After that - while savoring the happy thought that some bad stuff is now in the hands of the proper authorities - I go about my day.
