Work by Justin at Devotion tattoo

My kids gifted me a tattoo as a birthday present. They knew I've been wanting some ink the last few years. I fell in love with the concept of the tattoo and was really hoping for an artist that would bring it to life for me. I was initially nervous because I had never received a tattoo from Devotion, didn't know much about them, and I knew that they specialize in traditional. My worries were put at ease with Justin. Justin worked with me on the finer details of this piece. I even had some questions about potential changes I wanted to make and Justin shared his expertise on the benefits and disadvantages of them. I ultimately didn't move forward with some of the changes I wanted and ultimately, I'm so glad I didn't. I felt very comfortable as he began and throughout the tattoo. I felt heard and regarded. Justin's line work was stunning and I appreciate it that he took a minimal approach, using his sketch as a baseline and adding personable touches to the piece. This tattoo is on my forearm, which is generally a sensitive area, but Justin had a very easy hand and pain was very minimal. He was also pretty quick but not in a rushing kind of way. Overall, it was a painless experience, and I am very satisfied with the results. I'm referring people to Devotion for Justin's clean lines and beautiful artistry. If I have other pieces, I'm sure I'll be back. Great job! The photo I provided is two days post tattoo.

My mom and I scheduled tattoos with Jon on a bit of a whim...granted we scheduled like a week and a half out or something, but that's fantastic compared to 99% of the other quality parlors in the Valley. We sent in design ideas ahead of time and Jon didn't have anything sketched up when we got there, which I noticed some complaints about...and we did wait for like an hour or so (we went and got coffee) but it does make sense, people change their minds a lot. He was able to sketch something up for us and adjust as we liked. My moms tattoo was painful and Jon was great about getting it done quickly yet beautifully, with super smooth lines and precision. It was my moms first tattoo and she loved it! I also absolutely love mine and I get compliments on it all of the time! My only complaint is that all the lines one on hand (I have a God + Adam rendition, from Michael Angelo) are nice and thick, and the other one has some thin lines and some thick ones, and the thinner lines just don't stand out as well. But it's not anything that can't be fixed with a touch up, which Jon made clear he would do whenever we needed them done. I guess I have two complaints: I went back for a touch up a couple of weeks after I got it to have some areas retraced that had faded near my wrist bone, and then one area that needed filling in around a circle. I think he may have felt a bit rushed, I'm not sure if he didn't switch the needle speed down before doing that part, but it's a lot more solid then the rest of the circle, which is supposed to be speckled. But, I was also bleeding A LOT since my skin is fairly sensitive, so that may have contributed to it. Overall, great experience and I will return for my next tattoo! Jon is an amazing artist and runs a clean shop. I've already sent a couple of friends his way that are also pleased with his work.

Look at the bottom right you can clearly see the wavy line. The shop owner is ok with this mistake. He is ok with mistakes.

My wife got a tattoo here the end of September with Dustin. She got a pretty simple tattoo. The artist choose a size that was too big for the placement location. Next when tattooing he didn't keep his lines strait and didn't pay attention to arm placement and the resulting skin stretch that ended with an area of the tattoo that should have been round, having a curvy line. He also did a poor job with shading or the lack there of. When the shop owner was contacted he offered only lame excuses. Clearly the owner is ok with low quality work leaving his shop he honestly does not care. He even made comments about the other tattoos my wife had that greatly alluded to his inexperience and general tattooing knowledge. This shop should not be trusted with permanent placement of art on your body. Search around some more there have to be far better options in Boise. Edit to add: Haha I like the owners comment about my post being false even though I have clearly provided photographic evidence.

A splotchy moon, complete with four different tail-ends of the aquarius sign.

I'm not going to lie, I HATE leaving bad reviews. I know that working with people is hard, and being an artist is harder. But it's been over a year since I got tattooed here, and every day I hate it more and more. For context, this tattoo is really special and meaningful to me. I designed it myself, and decided to get it tattooed at Devotion as an 18th birthday present to myself. I spent two months finalizing the design, several weeks choosing the right shop/artist, and emailed them the design a month ahead of time. I REALLY wanted it to go well, especially since it was my first tattoo. I want to note that I made sure to get there about 20 minutes early, so this wasn't a time issue at all. I also made sure to ask if the artist I chose was good at/comfortable with the style of tattoo I wanted. I'm 99% sure that the first time they even glanced at the design was after I arrived. After checking me in, they dug through their emails and printed off the design, then asked how it was supposed to work (I had previously said it was going to wrap around my upper arm as a band). After reprinting the design a couple times, they placed the stencil and the artist got to work. It's important to know that when they placed the stencil, it was lining up weird. Like I said, I made the design myself, so while I did my best to make sure it would connect well I was also relying on the artist helping me fix any minor errors. They didn't. Once the loop was connected, they looked at it, SHRUGGED, and started inking. I know I should have said something, but I didn't want to be a dick, and I really thought that maybe they would fix it during the actual inking. I hoped the stencil wasn't 100% accurate to the finished product. Now that I've spent months looking at the tattoo, I can't stop noticing all the little things that add up to make it look completely f*cked. Because they didn't fix the line-up, the spacing in inconsistent on the connecting bit. There's blowout. The lines aren't straight. Edges that were supposed to be neat are inconsistent, round, and generally messy. Pretty much every corner isn't a corner, but a blob. The part that bugs me the most is that almost every single section isn't fully inked in. It's splotchy and looks more like a really sh*tty fade. When they did the reveal at the end, I was once again hoping that the messiness was just ink smudges, not the actual tattoo. When I unwrapped it and washed it for the first time, I was hoping it was just swollen and would heal down nice and pretty. For months I convinced myself that I liked it, and that any errors were from me not taking care of it properly (kept it wrapped 24 hours like they said, used aquaphor, moisturized it, used 100 spf sunscreen, avoided pools, never scratched at it). The only reason I came to terms with what actually happened, was because I got two other tattoos at a different shop. I took care of all three the same way, but only the one done here was bad. The two from the other shop even involved fine line work and were walk-ins, and they still turned out amazing. I feel like an idiot for having this tattoo. I spent time and money on it, and it symbolizes SO MUCH for me. When people notice my tattoos, they never compliment the one done at Devotion. One of the kids I work with actually thought someone drew it on me (but knew the other two were tattoos). From a distance it looks fine, but I just hate looking at it every day and knowing that I let someone f*ck up something so special. I really, really hope my experience wasn't universal. I hope the artist was just having an off day for whatever reason. But regardless, the tattoo I received doesn't reflect the time I put into it, the money I spent on it, or the artist's professionalism. And someone's "off day" is now stuck on me, permanently.

Their lining is great. Paid $80 for this.

I went to Devotion for my first tattoo. Just FYI, this place does tattoo minors with parents consent if you're looking for that . The atmosphere was fun and it seemed busy. I don't remember the name of the person who tattooed me, however he was friendly and professional and drew you a tattoo I loved. The only downside to this place was the price, I paid $80 for just simple lettering that wasn't big nor complicated. I do feel is should have been cheaper. However, still recommend this place.

I called and asked if I could walk-in and get a tattoo. Half an hour later I was there explaining my tattoo and the tattoo artist gave me exactly what I wanted and checked several times that the spelling was right. He did very detailed work and the lines are beautifully done!

    Immediately after the tattoo

Wonderful staff. Jon did exactly what I wanted and turned out great. Touch up was free, and it was really quick and easy.

Fantastic tattoo shop with a very friendly and helpful group of artist. Went in with a rough idea of what I wanted and the tattoo artist helped guide me through the whole process. I ended up with unique/original tattoo that I wear on my leg with pride. I highly recommend this shop if you are looking for a high quality tattoo.

Reborn, clean lines, much more definition.

I went in on a Saturday as a walk-in to get an old tattoo refreshed. Justin was there to talk with me and did the work. I am super happy with the results and can't recommend him and the shop enough. Great vibe, super clean, fun place.

    Roses on ribs

I came in today to get my first tattoo. I came in wanting some roses on my ribs and Justin gave me exactly what I was looking for. He listened to every idea I had and created a piece that I am really happy with. Everyone that worked in the shop was very professional and easy going. The shop itself was clean as well. I will definitely be coming back!

My before, during and after. Jon did an awesome job covering this for me.

In March 2014 I walked in to speak with Jon Morse about a cover up tattoo I wanted. He took a look at what I wanted covered and the ideas I had for the new tattoo and said he'd draw something up. I made an appointment for about a week later, I believe. I LOVED the stencil and we got to work! First sitting was 3 hours, all of the outlining was done. Second sitting was 2 hours for shading, color, and finishing touches. I would highly recommend this shop, and would absolutely use them in the future.

I have had nothing but compliments on them over the years, and they have held up very well for their age. Mike had recommended I go to Sean, if he ever wasn't around, or if there was something he knew Sean would do better. Recently, I had a piece that didn't turn out so well after healing, not to mention the fact that my first experience with an artist from a shop that was NOT Black Cat could only be described as unprofessional (Bad attitude, bad work ethic, and ultimately, a bad tattoo). This shop was in WA, where I live now. I decided to go see Sean, when I was in town for Christmas. Sean completely revived this piece and breathed new life into it. It looks better than it ever did to begin with. He even came in on his day off to accommodate my being there from out of town. The level of customer service and the quality of work I receive(d) at Black Cat Tattoo is a night and day difference from the other place. It's been that way for over 20 years at Black Cat and I cannot recommend them enough. If you want quality work from an artist that cares, go see Sean at Black Cat Tattoo.
