My husband got 2 fajitas and 2 lengua tacos, while I got the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas. My fajitas were decent, and I'll give them that for having fresh vegetables, but the meat was cut into such small pieces that it kind of felt like scraps. We're not Mexican, so I can't really speak on how authentic it is, but my husband's friends actually stopped by right after us, tried the food, and said pretty much the same thing! I actually love the grocery store itself. It's small but has SO much stuff, including things you wouldn't expect, and their fresh products are great. The only other thing I didn't really like was the checkout situation. Nobody came by to check on us when we were done eating, so we had to wait in the regular grocery checkout line to pay. Since we weren't holding any groceries, a bunch of people kept cutting in front of us without asking. I really hope they can improve this part because it was pretty frustrating. Owners Paul (the talented chef) and Kate bring such a personal touch to everything--they clearly care deeply about their customers and stopped by our table to chat, ensuring everything was perfect. Their genuine hospitality made the visit extra special. The food itself is outstanding. Everything is truly farm-to-table, with the restaurant sourcing all of its fresh ingredients directly from local farmers. You can taste the difference in every bite--the vibrant flavors, incredible freshness, and quality that only comes from supporting nearby producers. I especially loved their great specialty coffees, which paired beautifully with the seasonal dishes and breakfast/lunch offerings. The plates were exceptional, highlighting the best of what our region has to offer. Despite the many large grocery store competitors around town, the locals remain loyal to Cox's because of their Southern hospitality and quality products. From the moment you walk in to check-out, the staff are eager to help and answer any questions. On our first visit, we felt very welcomed as we took our time to browse the store. Hot foods are available most of the day, breakfast biscuit sandwiches in the morning and then typical lunch food fare(fried chicken/fish, meat pies, boudin, boudin balls, sausage links) for the rest of the day. We were surprised to find fresh, homemade cracklins for $16.99/lb. A majority of the hearty bite-sized pieces had a good meat:skin proportion. The cracklins had a nice crunch and seasoning, but not too spicy. (Most natives are used to the spicy seasoned cracklins from south La). There is an extensive selection of packaged specialty meats and foods (seasoned pork chops/pork tenderloin/chicken/ribs, stuffed chicken, certified Angus beef, smoked beef patties, twice-baked potatoes) and it was hard to select a few choices because everything looked deliciously mouthwatering! We grabbed a few of them to cook up at home- duck wrapped in bacon and chicken stuffed with crawfish dressing. Catering options are available too, just let them know in advance. The rest of the store is similar to what you would find in the typical convenient store with snacks and beverages, including some local brews. With the Mardi Gras season upon us, Abita Mardi Gras Bock is in stock too! I saw a small display of various jerky flavors and local jarred goodies like fruit, jams, and seasonings. Remember to visit Gene Cox's Grocery & Meats the next time you can't decide what to make for lunch/dinner. You'll be sure to find great food here should you need a little snack or a meal.
