I was looking for a real, spicy, Chinese restaurant for my Chinese girlfriend's birthday and I think this is probably as good as it gets.
The first good signs came as soon as we got in : people crying, sniffling at their table, then it hit me; the waft of spices got to my throat and I had a bit of a cough.
The other thing that hit us was how tiny the place was. We had had the good idea to book a table beforehand after reading the reviews and being advised by the waitress on the phone that we would not get a seat after 19h30 and so it was. In fact, we had (and happily did so, I might add) to share our table with another two-some, since there was no more room left in the place.
The menu is supposed to have a strength indicator but I think I missed that and just went with what sounded nice. The ravioli starters are indeed amazing and a good and easy way to see if you'll enjoy the spicier end of the spectrum the menu offers.
I had the imperial chicken, which seems to be the go to dish if you're afraid of spice (I saw a full table of guys arrived after us order just that because they were worried about the other dishes being too strong), my girlfriend has some beef, if I recall, which was absolutely delicious.
She also ordered a fish dish which we thought we would never finish when we saw the size of the bowl (and the fact that with the rice and previous dishes, we were already quite stuffed). But then she explained that you DON'T DRINK THE SOUP (I think one commenter below might have made that blunder), it's just there for marinating the fish. And how awesome it was, too!
All in all, it was a festival for the taste buds, through and through.
One thing I should point out is that I'm very specific about the kind of spice I like : I don't care much about strength, but about taste and flavours. And we were not disappointed : each dish had lots of flavours, with herbs, peppers, spice... very nice and subtle, while still having enough strength to make your nose runny (seriously, everybody in the place was sniffling, it was hilarious).
The service was fast and perfectly timed. We thought they had forgotten the fish, but it arrived precisely when we finished the other dishes. And a good thing that was because the tables, tiny as they are, were full. The waitress was very welcoming and answered all our questions patiently and with a smile (and in Chinese, in the case of my gf). You can see the chef cooking in the room next door, it's quite cool too.
The restaurant itself doesn't really look too exciting, with nothing of the usual garishness you'd expect from a Chinese, which I guess was a nice change. Still, it felt a bit bland. Also dear gods, they need more room, even if the lack of space does add a certain charm to the place (it's not exactly the same experience as when you're on a parisian café and they're trying to stuff as many people as they can on top of each other)
My Chinese girlfriend thought she was back home for a little hour, and I don't think I have ever tried a more spicey place in France, so far, and I'm grateful to Yelp for this little gem of a restaurant.
May they live long and prosper and keep cooking! And maybe get a bigger place to please more people. read more
